How Steam Machine Game Compatibility and SteamOS Work

Steam Machine is a Linux-based gaming PC, not a console that automatically runs every Steam purchase. It uses SteamOS 3 and Valve’s Proton compatibility layer to run many Windows games without native Linux versions. Compatibility is decided game by game: Valve’s Steam Machine review assigns a separate badge based on controller behavior, launcher usability, text entry and a 30 fps at 1080p performance target. A Steam Deck badge is useful context, but the Machine badge is the one to check for this hardware.

This distinction matters because Proton expands the library without making compatibility universal. A game can be Verified, require manual setup as Playable, be blocked as Unsupported, or remain Unknown because Valve has not completed its review. SteamOS also has a desktop mode for other launchers and software, but installing an application there does not prove that every game will work.

What SteamOS is and why Proton matters

Valve describes SteamOS as an open Linux platform that lets users install software and content. The operating system is Linux-based, with a console-oriented Steam interface for the living-room experience and a desktop mode for broader PC use. The underlying system includes open-source components, while the Steam Client remains proprietary and some third-party drivers are included.

Most Windows PC games are not Linux applications. Proton is the compatibility layer Valve ships with SteamOS to translate the Windows game’s calls into forms that Linux and the available graphics drivers can use. That lets a developer distribute a Windows build while SteamOS handles the translation layer on the player’s machine. Proton is still a work in progress, however. A game may encounter a blocking bug, an anti-cheat or launcher problem, a graphics fault or unacceptable performance even when another title works well.

Valve’s SteamOS page says Proton supported “over 18,000 titles last we checked.” The page does not provide a measurement date, so that wording should not be treated as a current 2026 count or as a guarantee for a particular Steam library.

What hardware Steam Machine uses

Valve’s Steam Machine page describes a PC running SteamOS 3, based on Arch Linux. The listed configuration is:

Component Valve’s listed configuration Qualification
CPU Semi-custom AMD Zen 4, 6 cores and 12 threads Published specification; Valve says some specifications may change before availability.
GPU Semi-custom AMD RDNA 3 Published specification; final details are not guaranteed before availability.
System memory 16 GB DDR5 Listed system configuration.
Video memory 8 GB GDDR6 Listed graphics-memory configuration.
Operating system SteamOS 3 The software platform used for Valve’s Machine compatibility review.

Those parts explain why a Machine rating is hardware-specific. Valve’s review is not simply asking whether a game launches under Linux; it is checking the experience on the target Steam Machine configuration. Because the product page warns that specifications may change before availability, do not treat the table as a final retail specification sheet.

How Valve reviews a game for Steam Machine

Valve’s Steamworks compatibility documentation defines the customer-facing badges and the checks behind them. The Machine review looks at the complete path from launching a game to playing its content with the expected controls.

Controller access and button prompts

A Machine-eligible game should let a player reach all of its content using Steam Controller inputs without first changing settings inside the game. On-screen button glyphs should match the controller actually in use, and text entry must be workable. A title that technically runs but requires a keyboard for an essential menu can therefore fail the review.

  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

Launchers and first-run screens

If a game uses a separate launcher, that launcher must be navigable with a controller. A launcher that traps the player at a mouse-only sign-in, update or confirmation window can turn an otherwise functional game into a Playable or Unsupported result.

Hardware and operating-system warnings

The reviewed experience should not warn that the device’s hardware or Linux distribution is unsupported. This check is separate from raw frame rate: a warning, broken installer or incompatible system component can affect the badge even when the game’s rendering performance looks acceptable.

Performance target

Valve’s current Machine checklist uses a default-configuration target of 30 frames per second at 1080p. That is a review threshold, not a promise that every game will run at exactly 30 fps, at 1080p in every scene, or with the same visual settings on every player’s display. Valve does not publish an individual benchmark for every title in the compatibility documentation.

What each compatibility badge means

Badge Meaning on Steam Machine What you should expect
Verified Valve’s checks pass without configuration work needed to access the game’s functionality. The normal controller, text-entry, launcher and performance conditions met the review criteria.
Playable The game functions but requires a manual adjustment. You may need to select a community controller configuration or operate a launcher during startup.
Unsupported The game does not function on the device because of Proton incompatibility or a specific hardware issue. Expect a blocking problem rather than a small settings tweak.
Unknown Valve’s compatibility review is incomplete. The badge is missing evidence, not a confirmation that the game is broken.

Do not collapse Unsupported and Unknown into the same category. Unsupported is a documented blocker in Valve’s review; Unknown means the review has not established the customer experience.

Is Steam Deck Verified the same as Steam Machine Verified?

No. Valve says the Steam Deck and Steam Machine ratings are independent. The important one-way relationship is that a Steam Deck Verified title is also Machine Verified. That does not mean every other Deck label transfers unchanged, nor does a Deck result tell you the Machine’s exact performance at its 1080p review target.

  • Compatible with Steam and Steam Deck

When a game matters to your purchase decision, open its Steam store or library compatibility information and look specifically for the Machine rating. Use the Deck rating as supplemental information only. A game marked Playable or Unknown for Machine deserves separate scrutiny even if its Deck listing looks familiar.

Do all Steam games work on Steam Machine?

No. Proton makes a large Windows library possible, but compatibility remains title-specific. Native Linux versions can also be considered: Valve says it tests the Windows build under Proton when a Linux build fails compatibility checks or has significant issues, then submits whichever test result is more favorable. A native build therefore does not automatically guarantee a Verified result, and the absence of a native build does not automatically make a game Unsupported.

Common reasons for a non-Verified result include a launcher that cannot be controlled from the couch, incorrect button prompts, unusable text fields, a required keyboard interaction, a Proton-specific blocking bug or performance below the review requirements. These are practical usability checks, not merely a test of whether an executable opens.

How to check a game before installing it

  1. Find the game in the Steam store or your library. Open its compatibility details and identify the Steam Machine badge, rather than relying only on a Deck badge.
  2. Read the badge definition. Verified means no configuration work was required in Valve’s review; Playable signals a known manual step; Unsupported signals a blocker; Unknown means the review is incomplete.
  3. Inspect launcher requirements. If the title starts another launcher, expect the Machine review to consider whether that software can be navigated with a controller.
  4. Plan for input differences. Playable games may require selecting a community controller configuration or using a launcher manually. Make sure that occasional keyboard or mouse access is acceptable for your setup.
  5. Set performance expectations correctly. The 30 fps at 1080p figure is Valve’s default-review target, not a title-specific benchmark or a guarantee for every graphics preset.
  6. Recheck uncertain titles. Unknown is an evidence gap, not a negative verdict. If a game is central to your library, wait for a Machine review or seek title-specific, current compatibility evidence before treating it as dependable.

What desktop mode can and cannot do

SteamOS desktop mode lets you install other launchers and software, which makes Steam Machine more flexible than a closed console. You can use the PC as a general Linux desktop and add applications outside the standard Steam game flow. Valve’s own description of an open platform supports that flexibility.

Desktop mode does not bypass Proton or Valve’s game-specific checks. A third-party launcher may install successfully yet fail at sign-in, updating, controller input, graphics initialization or anti-cheat. A game launched outside the normal Steam catalog may also lack a Machine badge. Treat desktop mode as an opportunity to experiment, not as validation that every external title works.

How to interpret performance claims

The Machine checklist’s 30 fps at 1080p requirement gives reviewers a common baseline. It does not tell you whether a particular game uses high, medium or low settings, whether demanding scenes dip below the target, or whether a connected display changes the result. Nor does it replace a title-specific test for games with unusual engines, launchers or graphics features.

For a buying decision, separate three questions:

  • Does it launch and remain usable? This is where Proton, launchers, text entry and controller checks matter.
  • Does it meet Valve’s review threshold? The default Machine review configuration targets 30 fps at 1080p.
  • Is that enough for your preferred settings? Valve’s badge does not publish a universal visual-quality or frame-rate profile for every player.

Practical decision framework for a Steam library

Your priority Evidence to prioritize Reason
Mostly first-party Steam games Machine badge for each frequently played title Compatibility is assessed per game, not for the library as a whole.
Couch play with a controller Verified status and launcher/input notes Controller access, matching glyphs and text entry are explicit review criteria.
Games with separate launchers Machine rating plus launcher usability A launcher can require manual work even when the game itself runs.
Maximum graphics performance Title-specific testing, not only the badge The 30 fps at 1080p figure is a review threshold, not a complete benchmark.
Non-Steam software Desktop-mode compatibility evidence for that application SteamOS permits installation but does not validate every external game or launcher.
Long-term hardware planning Final product announcement and specifications Valve says the posted Steam Machine specifications may change before availability.

What to do when a badge does not match your expectations

When a game is Verified but inconvenient

Verified means Valve’s reviewed functionality passed without configuration work; it is not a promise that every personal peripheral, display or preferred control layout will feel identical. Check the game’s own input options and confirm that your controller is recognized before changing unrelated system settings.

When a game is Playable

Follow the specific manual action indicated by the game’s compatibility information, such as choosing a community controller layout or operating a launcher. If that step is acceptable each time you start the game, Playable may fit your setup; if you want a purely controller-driven experience, treat the extra action as a meaningful limitation.

When a game is Unsupported

Assume the review found a blocking Proton or hardware issue. Do not buy or install it expecting a minor graphics adjustment to solve the problem unless a later, title-specific update changes its status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a game is Unknown

Unknown means Valve has not completed the review. It should trigger caution rather than a blanket yes or no. For a critical game, make its compatibility status part of your purchase decision and look for a later Machine result.

Bottom line for Steam Machine buyers

Steam Machine compatibility is a reviewed, title-level property. SteamOS 3 and Proton let a Linux-based PC run many Windows games, while Valve’s Machine badges add checks for controller access, launchers, text entry, warnings and a 30 fps at 1080p default target. Check the Machine badge for the games you actually play, distinguish Unknown from Unsupported, and treat desktop-mode flexibility and published hardware specifications as useful but limited information.
