Yes. If you bought a game on Steam shortly before it went on sale, you can request a refund and, if Steam approves it, buy the game again at the lower price. Valve says this specific refund-and-rebuy scenario is not abuse. It is a refund request followed by a separate purchase—not an automatic price adjustment—and the ordinary refund criteria still apply.
Can you refund a Steam game after its price drops?
Steam’s policy says you may request a refund for a game bought just before a sale and immediately repurchase it at the sale price. Valve explicitly says it does not consider that behavior abuse. The policy does not automatically adjust the price of your existing order: submit a refund request through Steam Support, then make a separate purchase if the refund is approved.
For the standard refund offer on games and software, the request should be made within 14 days of purchase and the game should have less than two hours of playtime. Steam describes these as its normal conditions, not a guarantee that every qualifying request will be approved. The policy page was last updated 23 April 2024; check it for current terms.
How to request a refund and rebuy at the sale price
- Open Steam’s Refunds page and follow the link to Steam Support.
- Select the recent game purchase and submit a refund request. Include that the game went on sale after you bought it if helpful.
- Wait for Steam’s decision. If approved, buy the game again at the current sale price; the rebuy is a new transaction.
Steam says approved refunds are issued within a week. Depending on whether your payment method supports refunds in your country, the money goes to your original payment method or your Steam Wallet.

What if you are outside the usual refund limits?
You can still ask Steam Support to review a request that falls outside the normal 14-day or two-hour conditions. Steam says it will consider the request, but does not promise approval. Explain the circumstances accurately and wait for the decision before assuming you will receive a refund.

Refund abuse and local rights
Steam says it may stop offering refunds if it believes someone is abusing the system. However, Valve’s policy specifically excludes requesting a refund for a game bought just before a sale and immediately rebuying it at the sale price from that definition of abuse.

Steam also notes that consumers in some jurisdictions may have additional refund rights in certain circumstances. The policy’s terms are not a substitute for jurisdiction-specific advice about those rights.
