A SteamVR headset connects to a PC either through the headset’s model-specific cable setup or, on supported Meta Quest, HTC Vive Focus and PICO models, by streaming over Wi-Fi with Steam Link. Then install SteamVR and any required headset software, check that the PC meets the relevant requirements, and confirm the game supports your headset and controllers.
How the connection works
SteamVR is the PC software layer for accessing VR content; it is not itself a cable or wireless connection method. It provides tools such as a status monitor, settings, room-boundary setup, SteamVR Home and an in-VR dashboard. The physical or wireless connection depends on the headset model. SteamVR on Steam
For a wired headset, use the video and USB connections specified for that model. For wireless PC streaming, Steam Link supports only listed headset families and models; it is not a universal wireless mode for every SteamVR headset.
Choose a connection method

Connect a tethered Vive headset
Steam’s Vive FAQ describes a VR-ready computer with a free HDMI port on the graphics card and a free USB port, along with a monitor, keyboard and mouse, and internet access. These are Vive-specific instructions: check the documentation for your exact headset before applying them to another model. If the relevant Vive setup lacks a free HDMI port, Steam describes a DisplayPort-to-Mini-DisplayPort cable as an option; confirm compatibility with the headset and PC before using an adapter or cable. Keep the tethered headset within cable reach of the play area. For Vive room-scale play, Steam specifies a minimum clear area of 2 m by 1.5 m (6.5 ft by 5 ft) and a maximum 5 m (16 ft) distance between base stations. Steam says seated and standing experiences have no minimum space requirement.
Connect wirelessly with Steam Link
Steam Link streams games from a PC running Steam and SteamVR to the Meta Quest, consumer HTC Vive Focus and PICO headset models listed by Steam. Supported models and software versions can change, so check the support page for your specific headset before setup. Steam’s listed minimum PC requirements include Windows 10 or newer and a GTX 970 or better, or RX 570 or better GPU, subject to Radeon exceptions on its support page. Its recommended specifications include 16 GB RAM and an RTX 2070 or better. For the network, Steam requires a 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 router at minimum and recommends Wi-Fi 6 or 6E. - Sign in to Steam on the PC and make sure Steam and SteamVR are installed.
- Connect the PC and headset to the same network.
- Install Steam Link from the headset or the applicable phone store, as appropriate for the setup.
- Open Steam Link in the headset and follow its connection instructions.
Steam Link is a streaming connection, not a direct cable connection. The listed headset support and network requirements are essential; having SteamVR installed alone does not make an unsupported headset compatible with Steam Link.
Check PC and game compatibility
Steam’s SteamVR page currently lists these minimum PC specifications. They are a baseline for SteamVR, not a guarantee that every game will run well; individual apps and content can have different requirements. SteamVR on Steam

Steam says its Steam Client supports Windows 10 and later from January 1, 2024. Check the specific game’s Steam page as well as the headset’s requirements: meeting the SteamVR baseline does not establish that the PC meets every title’s needs.
On a game’s Steam page, inspect its VR Support details and controller information before buying or launching. Steam recommends that Windows Mixed Reality users look for the “Windows Mixed Reality” VR Support label. Windows Mixed Reality setup
Windows Mixed Reality has its own setup path rather than the generic steps for other headsets. Steam Support describes setting up the headset and Windows Mixed Reality Portal, then installing and launching SteamVR. Troubleshoot a black headset display
If the headset is connected but shows no video, Steam Support advises checking that the headset link box and monitor are connected to the same functioning GPU and video ports. Its troubleshooting steps also describe enabling Direct Mode in SteamVR settings; when Direct Mode is working, the headset displays VR content rather than behaving like a desktop monitor. What to check before starting a game
- Identify the exact headset model and confirm its supported connection method.
- For a tethered setup, verify the required video and USB ports and keep the play area within cable reach.
- For Steam Link, check the current supported-model list, same-network connection and router capability.
- Install SteamVR and any setup software required by the headset.
- Compare the PC with both SteamVR’s listed baseline and the individual game’s requirements.
- Review the Steam game page’s VR Support and controller details.
