Sylvain Munaut adapted a 1998 3dfx Voodoo2 graphics card to run with a Raspberry Pi 5, bridging the card’s PCI connection to the Pi’s PCI Express lane. Making the hardware link work was only part of the project: the Pi’s ARM-based system also needed a ported kernel driver, while DOSBox-X supplied compatibility for legacy MS-DOS and Windows software. It is a technically involved retrofit—not a plug-and-play Pi accessory—and Munaut reported that power draw was a significant challenge.
What it took to connect a Voodoo2 to a Raspberry Pi 5
The 3dfx Voodoo2 was built for a PCI slot in an x86-era PC. The Raspberry Pi 5 does not have a conventional PCI slot, so Munaut adapted the card’s PCI connection to PCI Express and connected it to the Pi’s available PCIe lane. That solves the physical bus mismatch, but not the differences between the card’s intended computer and the Pi.
The Pi 5 uses an ARM-based environment, while the Voodoo2’s original driver and software ecosystem targeted x86 PCs. Munaut ported a kernel driver for the host and used DOSBox-X as a compatibility layer for original MS-DOS and Windows software. The combination of electrical, driver, and software work is what makes the project more than attaching an old card to a new computer.
Munaut’s public driver source is available in the 3dfx-kdrv GitHub repository. Hackster’s project report describes the build and links to Munaut’s project video. The report does not specify a generally compatible adapter model, provide a complete wiring diagram, or establish a reproducible bill of materials, so it should not be read as a retail-adapter recipe.

Power was a practical obstacle
Munaut told Hackster that the card could draw “Even more than 3A apparently” and that using “a 1.5A random supply” caused problems. He summed up the experience by saying, “Turns out a Voodoo2 can eat quite some power.” These are his observations about the project, not a formal current specification for every Voodoo2 card or build.
The report does not validate a particular replacement supply. Anyone attempting a similar setup needs to check the requirements of the actual card and the complete build rather than treating those reported figures as a universal power recommendation.

Why the Voodoo2 mattered to PC gaming
The Voodoo2 was a dedicated 3D accelerator introduced in 1998. As Raspberry Pi Press explains in its historical feature, the card did not replace a PC’s ordinary 2D graphics device. A typical system used a separate 2D card, with a VGA loop-back cable routing the display signal through the Voodoo2 when 3D acceleration was needed.
Its standard design paired one frame-buffer interface chip, codenamed Chuck, with two texture mapping units, codenamed Bruce. Chuck handled communication with the CPU and tasks such as triangle setup, Gouraud shading, alpha blending, fogging, depth buffering, dithering, and display control. The Bruce chips handled texture mapping, mipmapping, and filtering. With games that supported multiple texture layers, the two texture units could perform dual texturing in one pass; Raspberry Pi Press cites Unreal and Quake II as examples.

Voodoo2 cards commonly came with 8 MB or 12 MB of EDO memory. In the configurations described by Raspberry Pi Press, 8 MB cards allocated 2 MB to each Bruce chip, while 12 MB cards commonly allocated 4 MB per chip. Chuck’s allocation included a 4 MB frame buffer and a 90 MHz memory interface.
Voodoo2, Voodoo, and two-card SLI
Raspberry Pi Press reports that the Voodoo2 raised the clock rate from the original Voodoo’s 50 MHz to 90 MHz. It also supported SLI, or scan-line interleave: two cards could divide even and odd scan lines between them. The feature could enable 1,024 × 768 gaming with four Bruce texture units working together, but compatibility constraints and higher CPU demands kept SLI a niche configuration.

It excels in IoT projects, robotics design, retro gaming devices, home media servers and other DIY creations. Backed by a large global community, you can easily find guides, technical support and shared projects online
That historical SLI capability is separate from Munaut’s Raspberry Pi 5 project. The figures describe Voodoo2 hardware and a two-card arrangement; they are not performance measurements of the Pi build. Hackster’s report does not provide a controlled benchmark for how the adapted card performs on the Pi 5.

The project is best understood as a hardware-and-software experiment for people interested in retro graphics, driver work, and adapting legacy hardware. A period-appropriate PC with a compatible PCI slot follows the Voodoo2’s intended connection more directly, though compatibility still depends on the particular computer and software. The Pi 5 route adds PCIe conversion and ARM driver adaptation; the available account does not establish that it is cheaper, faster, or easier than using a period PC.

- 【 Faster CPU, Better GPU 】 Pi 5 features a Broadcom BCM2712 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4GHz, it delivers a 2–3× increase in CPU performance relative to RaspberryPi 4. The 800MHz VideoCore VII GPU is compatible to OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan 1.2, substantial uplift in graphics performance. Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.
Munaut joked about the decision to take the difficult route: “Because why go for simple when you can make your life ten times harder?” For a Pi owner hoping to add 3D acceleration with a simple accessory, the important distinction is that this build depends on custom adaptation and legacy-software compatibility work, not merely on a card-to-slot converter.
