Nintendo Switch 2 is no longer a rumored console: Nintendo announced it on January 16, 2025, revealed its features and launch plans on April 2, and released it on June 5, 2025. Several widely discussed ideas—including magnetic Joy-Con and mouse-style controls—became official features. Claims about a console after Switch 2 remain unconfirmed by Nintendo.

What is Nintendo Switch 2, and when did it come out?

Switch 2 is Nintendo’s successor to the original Nintendo Switch. Nintendo confirmed the name and successor relationship in its January 16, 2025 announcement, then set the launch date for June 5, 2025 in its April 2, 2025 presentation.

That makes “rumors about Nintendo’s next console” a historical framing for Switch 2 itself. The useful distinction now is between details that Nintendo confirmed before launch and speculation about what might come after it.

Which Switch 2 rumors became official?

A successor that plays original Switch games

Nintendo confirmed that Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Compatibility is not universal: some original Switch titles may be unsupported or may not work fully. Check Nintendo’s current Switch 2 feature information for compatibility details rather than assuming every game works.

Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

A larger, higher-resolution screen

The built-in display is a 7.9-inch LCD with 1080p resolution. Nintendo lists HDR, variable refresh rate (VRR), and support for up to 120 frames per second in compatible games. Those are capabilities, not guarantees that every game uses HDR or runs at 120 fps.

Magnetic Joy-Con with mouse-style controls

Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically and can function as mouse controls in compatible games. The console retains the original Switch’s three play modes: handheld, tabletop, and TV.

Higher-resolution TV output

In TV mode, Switch 2 can output up to 4K in supported games on compatible displays, with 4K output capped at 60 fps. Nintendo’s feature page says TV-mode VRR arrived in a system update released September 10, 2026. This is a newer addition than launch-era descriptions may suggest; it still does not mean every game or display uses VRR.

How do Switch 2’s online and social features work?

GameChat includes voice chat and screen sharing. Video chat requires a Nintendo Switch 2 Camera or compatible USB-C camera, sold separately. Nintendo says online features require an internet connection, a Nintendo Account, and a Nintendo Switch Online membership; availability varies by country.
