Puella Magi Madoka Magica‘s first two movies, Beginnings and Eternal, retell the original 12-episode television story in a condensed, revised theatrical edit. They are not shot-for-shot copies: scenes are cut together across episode boundaries, animation and finishing were updated, some transformations and witch sequences were remade, and the music was changed. Rebellion is different altogether—a new story made after those compilation films, not a third recap.
The short version: three films, two different purposes
The phrase “the Madoka Magica movies” can describe two compilation films and one sequel, so treating the trilogy as three recaps creates the wrong expectation. Beginnings and Eternal cover the same central narrative as the television anime. Rebellion does not repeat that narrative; it continues the franchise with an original film story produced after the compilations.

That distinction answers the most common question: Beginnings and Eternal are revised compilations, while Rebellion is a new work.
What the original television series provides
The 2011 television anime consists of 12 episodes. Its format gives every episode a defined beginning and ending, allowing information, character interactions and reversals to arrive with television-sized pauses between them. A viewer can remember a line from one episode, sit with its implications, and then enter the next installment with that context still fresh.

The series is therefore more than a list of scenes that can be measured against a film cut. Its episodic structure controls when the audience receives information and how long a particular emotional beat has to settle. Even when the films preserve the same core events, changing the order and distance between those events changes the experience of watching them.
How Beginnings and Eternal re-edit the 12 episodes
They compress all 12 episodes into two theatrical narratives
The first two movies are an official two-film re-editing of all 12 television episodes. They were originally released theatrically in October 2012. The films are designed as continuous cinema rather than as two sets of six television episodes: scenes that were separated by episode endings, opening sequences or a week-long broadcast gap can follow one another directly.
Director Akiyuki Shinbo described the practical problem in the 2012 Beginnings theatrical-pamphlet interview: “When making a compilation, you cut scenes and connect episodes that were originally separate, so you have to be very careful with the small details.” That warning explains why the films should not be described as a simple export of the broadcast masters. The editorial joins themselves are part of the adaptation.
The theatrical cut is denser
Without television breaks, developments can arrive one after another. Shinbo noted that viewers may miss details if they do not remember earlier lines or interactions, because the compressed version moves through connected material more quickly. The result is not necessarily confusing, but it demands more continuous attention than an episode-by-episode viewing schedule.

The density also changes emphasis. A line that originally ended an episode may now be followed immediately by a consequence. A transition that television used as a week-long suspense point may become a short theatrical passage. The underlying events remain recognizable, yet the timing of discovery and reaction is different.
What was changed beyond the edit
Animation and finishing were reviewed for theatrical projection
Shinbo explained that the production revisited how the television image and movement would look on a large screen, then redid animation and finishing where appropriate. This means the compilation films are not merely television footage placed into a cinema container. Their line work, compositing and presentation were examined with theatrical projection in mind.
Magical-girl transformations were remade
The transformation sequences received specific attention. “The transformation scenes of the magical girls are, after all, scenes that look impressive, so we remade them,” Shinbo said in the same interview. These sequences are natural places to notice the film version’s expanded visual ambition: they are designed as spectacle and were among the scenes singled out for reconstruction rather than simple reuse.

Witch-appearance scenes were revised
Scenes depicting the witches were also changed at the request of Gekidan Inu Curry, the creative team responsible for the series’ distinctive mixed-media witch worlds. The altered sequences can therefore feel different in design, movement or staging even when they represent the same narrative moment. The available official descriptions establish that these scenes were changed; they do not provide a complete shot-by-shot inventory of every revision.

Music changes alter familiar scenes
The films use new or changed musical choices. Shinbo emphasized that different music can change the impression of a scene that viewers already know. A pause, reveal or confrontation may carry a different emotional weight when the score enters at another point or uses a different arrangement. This is one reason a viewer who has seen the series can still experience the compilations as a distinct presentation rather than as redundant footage.
Small visual details and what they do—and do not—mean
Shinbo described the theatrical version with a personal image: it resembles “a world that has looped one or two more times.” In context, he was discussing small altered details and the feeling of a subtly revised world. That phrase is not an official statement that the films add a new canonical time loop to the plot. It is best read as an explanation of the adaptation’s texture.
He cited minor character-presentation differences, including a hair accessory for Sayaka and appearances of Madoka in casual clothes. Such details are useful evidence that the production team adjusted more than just running order. They should not be inflated into proof that the central story has been replaced. The films remain retellings of the television narrative, with selective visual and editorial changes.

Official material confirms the re-editing, denser transitions and production updates, but it does not establish a complete cut-by-cut catalogue. There is no reliable figure in the cited material for the exact number of omitted shots, newly animated seconds, rearranged lines or the percentage of changed footage. Consequently, claims such as “the movie removes exactly X minutes” or “every scene is identical except for Y” go beyond what the documented sources support.

The safe comparison is qualitative and structural: the television series preserves the original episodic rhythm; Beginnings and Eternal condense and reconnect that material while revising selected visuals, sound and finishing. Individual release versions may also differ in subtitles, audio tracks or mastering, so a viewer comparing discs should identify the edition and region before treating a presentation difference as a story change.
Where Rebellion fits
It is not a third compilation
The official franchise history separates Rebellion from Beginnings and Eternal, calling it a completely new work produced after the compilation films. It is therefore incorrect to describe all three movies as summaries of the 12-episode series. Rebellion assumes the viewer is moving beyond the original story and presents new dramatic material.
Recommended position in a first viewing
For a first encounter with the franchise, the television series gives the clearest view of the original pacing and episode structure. Rebellion belongs after that story, whether the viewer reaches it through the series or through the two compilation films. Watching Rebellion before either version of the original narrative removes the context that the film is designed to follow.

Which version should you choose?
Choose the television anime when pacing and structure matter most
- You want to see the 2011 story in its original 12-episode form.
- You prefer clear episode boundaries and time between major developments.
- You want the baseline against which the theatrical revisions can be compared.
Choose Beginnings and Eternal when you want a theatrical retelling
- You would rather watch the complete core story as two continuous films.
- You are interested in revised animation, remade transformations, changed witch scenes and different musical treatment.
- You already know the series and want to experience familiar events with denser transitions and updated presentation.
Add Rebellion when you are ready for new story material
- You have completed the television narrative or its two-film retelling.
- You want continuation rather than another recap.
- You are prepared for a film whose purpose and structure differ from the compilations.
Neither format is established as universally superior. The meaningful choice is whether you value the original episodic rhythm or the films’ compressed, revised theatrical continuity.
Physical editions and what is documented
Aniplex of America announced a three-disc Puella Magi Madoka Magica: the Movie Trilogy Blu-ray on April 26, 2021. The set contains Beginnings, Eternal and Rebellion, lists Japanese and English audio, includes English and Spanish subtitles, and gives an approximate total of 357 minutes. Those specifications describe the announced product; they do not guarantee that every retailer still has stock or that the same package is sold in every country.
Aniplex’s official catalogue also lists DVD and Blu-ray releases for the compilation films and a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray product covering all three movies. Edition names, included languages and availability can vary by territory. Check the package details for your region rather than assuming that a listing in one market applies worldwide.
Streaming availability is particularly date- and region-dependent. The documented material does not establish a current global streaming home, so viewers should verify the service catalogue in their own country at the time they plan to watch.
A practical viewing plan
- Start with one complete version of the original story. Watch all 12 television episodes, or watch Beginnings followed by Eternal if you specifically want the theatrical edit.
- Allow for the pacing difference. The films connect material that television separated, so schedule them as continuous movies rather than expecting six-episode stopping points to feel equivalent.
- Compare presentations, not just plot points. Notice transformations, witch scenes, transitions and musical choices; those are documented areas of revision.
- Watch Rebellion afterward. Treat it as a new continuation, not as the final chapter of a three-part recap.
- Check your edition’s specifications. Confirm audio, subtitle language, disc format and regional compatibility before purchasing or borrowing a physical release.
Common misconceptions to avoid
- “All three movies are recaps.” Only Beginnings and Eternal re-edit the television story; Rebellion is new.
- “The first two films are shot-for-shot identical to the show.” Official accounts describe cuts, cross-episode joins, updated finishing, remade transformations, changed witch scenes and musical revisions.
- “The loop wording proves an additional canonical loop.” Shinbo’s “one or two more times” line is his image for subtle differences in the film world, not a plot confirmation.
- “A precise cut percentage is established.” The cited sources do not provide a complete cut list, runtime comparison or ratio of changed footage.
- “A listed Blu-ray is currently available everywhere.” The 2021 announcement and catalogue entries document editions, not current stock or universal regional availability.
Bottom line
The original anime and the first two films tell the same core story through different forms. The 12-episode series gives you the original broadcast pacing; Beginnings and Eternal make that story denser and more theatrical while revising selected animation, witch imagery, transformations, finishing and music. Rebellion then moves beyond the recap format as a new story. Choose the version according to whether you want television structure, a revised theatrical retelling or the continuation that follows both.
