Myrient planned to shut down on 31 March 2026. Before that deadline, the MiNERVA Archive team announced that it had completed a 385TB mirror of the collection. The project later made torrents available—but a reported backup is not the same as an independently audited archive with proven long-term access.
Why Myrient announced its closure
On 26 February 2026, Myrient’s official Telegram channel announced that the site would close on 31 March. The operator cited insufficient donations to cover traffic and complained that specialized download managers bypassed site protections and donation messages. The notice said the operator was paying more than $6,000 out of pocket each month to cover the shortfall.
The notice gives Myrient’s operator’s account of the decision; it does not establish a general explanation for the costs faced by preservation projects. PC Gamer also reported pressure on hardware prices linked to demand from AI data centers, but that context does not show that AI was the sole or proven cause of Myrient’s planned closure. Read Myrient’s closure notice on Telegram and PC Gamer’s reporting on storage-cost pressures.
How the community backup unfolded
| Date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| 26 February 2026 | Myrient announced a 31 March closure, citing funding and operational concerns. |
| 10 March 2026 | A progress update attributed to the MiNERVA team said approximately 90% of Myrient had been archived, with retrieval, verification, accounting, and additional backup work continuing. |
| 11 March 2026 | A SaveMyrient moderator relayed the MiNERVA team’s announcement that the mirror was complete at 385TB. Torrent generation was still in progress. |
| 12 March 2026 | Time Extension reported the team’s claimed full backup ahead of Myrient’s planned shutdown. |
| 31 March 2026 | Myrient shut down on the date it had announced, according to the MiNERVA FAQ. |
| 1 April 2026 | The MiNERVA team announced that torrents were available and noted remaining website and torrent-layout issues. |
The 10 March progress report and 11 March completion announcement were relayed through community posts rather than presented here as independently authenticated statements from the team. The completion announcement said, “We can now announce that the Myrient mirror is now 100% COMPLETE!! Total size is 385TB”. That is the project’s reported figure, not an external measurement. What “saved” means—and what it does not establish
The reported 385TB mirror is a significant preservation milestone, but several separate questions matter when judging whether an archive is secure for the long term:
- Was a copy assembled? The MiNERVA team announced that it had completed the mirror on 11 March.
- Was its integrity checked? The 10 March update described verification work, but the available announcements do not establish an independent, full-file audit of the completed mirror.
- Can people access it? The team said torrents were available on 1 April while also acknowledging website and torrent-layout issues.
- Will it remain available? The available information does not establish current seed health, stable hosting, the persistence of multiple copies, or ongoing access as of 4 October 2026.
So the careful conclusion is that the project reported completing and distributing a backup—not that every file has been independently verified or that the archive is permanently safe. A preservation copy can exist while its integrity, redundancy, access, and durability remain uncertain. The MiNERVA project’s FAQ provides its stated purpose and closure context; its community updates are the source of the project announcements relayed by SaveMyrient.

Why this rescue matters
Myrient’s closure notice illustrates how much a large community resource can depend on one operator’s ability to absorb recurring costs. The community response moved from retrieval and verification to a reported complete mirror, then to torrent distribution. Those are meaningful steps toward redundancy, but they do not by themselves guarantee lasting stewardship.
The episode also shows why preservation is more than copying files: durable access depends on maintaining copies, documenting integrity, and keeping distribution routes working. The specific archive’s legal status and the rules governing redistribution in any particular jurisdiction are not established by the sources cited here. Readers should not assume the files are universally legal to download or in the public domain.
