The acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Skydance closed on October 6, 2026, and the combined company is named Skydance. Warner Bros. Games and Skydance’s game-development businesses are both part of its portfolio. That brings more studios and entertainment franchises under one owner, but it does not, by itself, confirm a studio merger, a new game, a changed release date, or a change to support for games already out.
What is confirmed about the deal and its games businesses?
Skydance announced the acquisition’s completion on October 6, 2026, after required approvals and closing conditions. The transaction is no longer pending. In its closing-day overview, the Associated Press listed Warner Bros. Games and Skydance’s game-development businesses in the combined portfolio. That establishes common ownership; it does not establish how the businesses will be organized or run.
Paramount had already announced a games division before the closing. On June 5, 2026, Paramount described Paramount Games Studio as bringing together Paramount and Skydance gaming studios, and named Skydance Interactive and Skydance New Media as development teams. That announcement described Paramount’s and Skydance’s games operation at that time, not Warner Bros. Games’ post-closing structure.
Does the merger mean studios will combine or close?
Not on the information announced. Portfolio inclusion is not the same as operational integration. The closing-day reporting does not specify Warner Bros. Games’ post-close leadership, reporting lines, staffing, or whether any studios will be combined or closed. No conclusion about those decisions follows from the acquisition alone.

It also helps to distinguish the companies involved in making a game. A rights owner may license a franchise, a publisher may fund or distribute a game, and a developer may build it; those roles can belong to different organizations. For example, Paramount’s June 2026 announcement named PlatinumGames as developer and Paramount Games as publisher of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin.
Which franchises are now in the combined portfolio?
The Associated Press’s closing-day overview identified game-relevant properties including Harry Potter; DC characters such as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman; Game of Thrones; SpongeBob SquarePants; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; Avatar: The Last Airbender; and Looney Tunes. Skydance’s merger announcement also named Mission: Impossible and Top Gun, among other properties.

These are examples of franchises in the portfolio, not a slate of announced games. Common ownership could make it easier to coordinate licensing, promotion, or plans across film, television, and games. That is a possible business opportunity, not a confirmed Warner Bros. Games strategy. The deal alone does not announce a crossover, sequel, remake, or new game based on any of these properties.
What happens to games already announced or released?
The available company announcements do not give a title-by-title update to release dates, platforms, development teams, or post-launch support. They also do not announce that an existing game will be delisted or lose online services. Players should look for updates from the relevant publisher or developer before treating any of those outcomes as confirmed.

Projects Paramount named before the closing
Paramount’s June 5, 2026 announcement described Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin as a console and PC action-adventure game developed by PlatinumGames and published by Paramount Games. It described Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game as a PC game, with other platforms to come. Those are details from the pre-closing announcement; they do not establish either project’s status after October 6. A merger should not be treated as evidence that either project has changed.
Games already on sale
Hogwarts Legacy is one example of an existing game associated with a franchise in the combined portfolio. Its inclusion as an example does not mean the deal announced a new edition, a change in availability, or a change to the game’s support. Those are separate, title-specific matters.

Do the company’s film and streaming plans signal a change to games?
No game plan follows from the company-wide film and streaming commitments. In its closing announcement, Skydance said streaming services would unify into one service over time and committed to at least 30 theatrical films annually, each with a minimum 45-day theatrical window. Those are streaming and theatrical-film statements, not game release targets or support promises.
Likewise, the U.S. Department of Justice’s June 2026 statement addressed streaming, linear television, and theatrical film markets. It should not be read as an assessment of competition among video-game businesses.

What should players watch for next?
- Studio organization: a direct announcement naming leadership, reporting structure, combinations, closures, or staffing changes.
- Specific projects: an update from a publisher or developer confirming a game’s status, platforms, release window, or creative team.
- Existing-game support: a title-specific notice about updates, online services, storefront availability, or end-of-support plans.
- New franchise plans: a named game or licensing announcement. Ownership of a property alone is not confirmation that a game is in development.
Until such announcements appear, the clearest conclusion is limited but useful: the games businesses and franchises now sit within the same corporate portfolio, while the practical effects on studios, projects, and players remain unannounced.
