Recommended Free Tools
For a full online store, install the official WooCommerce PayPal Payments extension. For a service, donation, or one-off sale, use PayPal Payment Buttons or a Payment Link instead. You do not need WooCommerce to take a single PayPal payment, but WooCommerce is the practical choice when you need a catalog, cart, shipping, tax, order records, refunds, or subscriptions.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
This guide explains both setups, the current minimum software versions, the exact WordPress menus, Sandbox testing, payment-method availability, and the legacy PayPal Standard option.

Choose the right PayPal setup first
Your sales workflow should determine the integration. Installing a complete store for one payment adds unnecessary configuration; using a button for a catalog leaves you without inventory and order-management tools.
| Requirement | WooCommerce PayPal Payments | Standalone PayPal Buttons or Links |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Stores with several products, a cart, shipping, tax, inventory, refunds, or customer accounts | A small catalog, a service, donation, event ticket, or occasional one-off payment |
| Cart and order management | Yes; WooCommerce creates orders and provides store administration | No full WooCommerce cart or order system |
| Shipping and tax rules | Configured in WooCommerce and passed through the checkout flow | Limited; you define the item and amount in the button or PayPal checkout |
| Recurring payments | Supported for eligible accounts when reference transactions and vaulting are approved and enabled | Not a substitute for a complete subscription-management system |
| Customer checkout | PayPal checkout can be combined with cards and other methods available to your market and account | A PayPal button opens a payment action for the specified product or amount |
| Setup effort | Higher, because you configure a store, products, checkout, and order settings | Lower; create a button or link and place it on a page or share it |
| Shareable URL | Not the primary workflow | Payment Links are designed for email, social posts, or messages |
What you need before installation
Check the documented software minimums
The WooCommerce startup guide lists WordPress 6.5 or newer, WooCommerce 9.6 or newer, and PHP 7.4 or newer for the PayPal Payments extension. Update WordPress, WooCommerce, and PHP through your host or WordPress administration before installing. Take a backup and confirm that your theme and other checkout extensions support the versions you plan to run.

Have a PayPal account and decide where money should settle
You need a PayPal account connected during onboarding. A business account is the normal choice for selling, while the documented setup also lists a personal account as an account requirement. Confirm that the account can receive commercial payments in your country and that its legal name, address, bank details, and identity checks are complete.
Confirm country, currency, and commercial terms
Payment methods and fees are not universal. PayPal pricing varies by country, payment type, and merchant agreement, so check the pricing page for your region rather than applying a generic percentage. The same regional and account restrictions affect whether customers see Pay Later, Venmo, card fields, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSet up PayPal on a WooCommerce store
Use this route when your site needs products, a cart, shipping, tax calculations, inventory, customer order history, or structured refunds.
- Verify prerequisites. Confirm WordPress 6.5+, WooCommerce 9.6+, PHP 7.4+, a working HTTPS site, and a PayPal account. Resolve update or compatibility warnings before adding the gateway.
- Install the extension. In WordPress administration, go to Plugins > Add New. Search for
WooCommerce PayPal Payments, choose the official extension, select Install Now, and then select Activate. - Open the payment settings. Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Payments. Select PayPal, then choose Set Up or Complete setup, depending on the state shown on your site.
- Connect the merchant account. Select Activate PayPal Payments. The onboarding wizard sends you through PayPal’s authorization flow. Sign in to the account that should receive the money, approve the requested connection, and return to WordPress. Do not paste live credentials into an unrelated plugin or a theme field.
- Review the methods that are offered. The extension documents PayPal, Pay Later, advanced card fields, and Venmo in the United States. Apple Pay and Google Pay can also appear where they are enabled. Availability depends on country, account approval, device, currency, and the settings shown after onboarding.
- Configure the store around the gateway. Check the store currency, product prices, shipping zones, tax settings, checkout pages, order-status behavior, refund workflow, and customer email templates. A payment can be approved while a misconfigured shipping or tax rule still produces the wrong order total, so place a complete test order.
- Test in Sandbox, then switch to live. Create or connect PayPal Sandbox test accounts and use the Sandbox option recommended in the onboarding documentation. Test approval, cancellation, failure, refund, email notifications, stock reduction, shipping charges, and the final order status. Only after those checks pass should you connect live credentials and make a small real transaction.
What customers may see at checkout
WooCommerce PayPal Payments is documented as a full-stack payment solution with smart payment buttons, advanced card fields, and, where enabled, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Pay Later, and Fastlane. These are capabilities of the extension, not promises that every customer will see every method. Geographic availability, merchant approval, currency, device, and account configuration control the final list.

A practical Sandbox test matrix
- Complete a normal PayPal approval and verify that WooCommerce changes the order to the expected paid status.
- Cancel at PayPal and confirm that the customer returns to the correct page without a paid order.
- Use a declined or failed Sandbox scenario and check that the order remains unpaid and the customer receives a useful error.
- Test a refund from the WooCommerce order screen and verify the refund record in PayPal.
- Place an order with shipping and tax so the amount sent to PayPal matches the amount displayed in the cart.
- Confirm that stock, confirmation emails, and administrator notifications behave as intended.
The Sandbox test recommendation comes from PayPal’s onboarding documentation. The individual checks above are an implementation checklist: run them on your own site before changing to live credentials.
Accept a payment without WooCommerce
If you sell only a few items, take donations, invoice for a service, or need a single checkout action, a standalone PayPal option is usually simpler. You avoid catalog, cart, shipping, and order-management configuration that you do not need.
Use the official PayPal Payment Buttons plugin
- In WordPress, open Plugins > Add New and search for the official PayPal Payment Buttons plugin.
- Install and activate it, then open its settings and connect the required PayPal API credentials as prompted.
- Enter the product or service name, price, currency, and any options the plugin requests. Keep the amount and description consistent with the page copy and your customer receipt.
- Publish the button on the relevant page or post. The plugin listing describes this as a way to add a payment button without WooCommerce.
- Run a Sandbox transaction if the plugin and account support Sandbox credentials, then test a live transaction only after checking the return page, email, and payment record.
Add a Payment Buttons block in the editor
PayPal’s official WordPress guidance describes inserting a Payment Buttons block in the block editor. Edit a page, type /PayPal and select the PayPal block, or use the block inserter to search for PayPal. Follow the block’s connection and product prompts, save the page, and verify the published button in an incognito browser window.
This approach is appropriate when the page needs an embedded purchase action but not a WooCommerce cart. If you need multiple quantities, variants, shipping rules, customer accounts, or a durable order ledger, move to WooCommerce instead of adding many independent buttons.

Payment Links versus Buy Buttons
PayPal’s developer overview distinguishes two simple selling tools:
| Tool | How the customer reaches checkout | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Payment Link | A shareable URL sent through email, social media, messaging, or another channel | You need to request payment without embedding a checkout on your site |
| Buy Button | An embedded purchase action placed on a website for a specific product or service | You want a visible call to action on a sales, donation, or service page |
A link is useful for an invoice-style request or a campaign distributed across several channels. A Buy Button is better when the page itself explains the offer and the customer should start checkout there. Neither option automatically supplies the inventory, shipping, tax, and order-management functions of WooCommerce.

Do not promise recurring billing merely because the PayPal option appears in WordPress. WooCommerce PayPal Payments supports subscriptions when the merchant account is approved for the required reference transactions and vaulting is enabled. Approval and eligibility vary, so verify the current status with PayPal before advertising a subscription plan.
For a recurring product, test the complete lifecycle in Sandbox where supported: initial authorization, renewal, failed renewal, cancellation, customer notification, and refund. Make sure your subscription extension, WooCommerce order status, and PayPal account all agree about who controls the recurring authorization.

What to do with PayPal Standard
PayPal Standard is a legacy WooCommerce method. WooCommerce hides it for new installations from WooCommerce 5.5 and strongly recommends the PayPal Payments extension instead. Standard redirects the customer to PayPal to finish payment and is mainly relevant to existing stores that already depend on it.
If an older store still uses Standard, plan a controlled migration: document the current checkout and return URLs, back up the site, install PayPal Payments in a staging environment, test orders and refunds with Sandbox, and schedule the change when you can monitor the first live transactions. Do not install both gateways and assume they share settings or order states.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
The PayPal method does not appear
- Recheck that the extension is activated and that WooCommerce > Settings > Payments shows a completed connection.
- Confirm that the store currency and customer country are supported for the method you expect.
- Check whether the method requires merchant approval; Venmo, Pay Later, card fields, and wallets are not available in every market or account.
- Clear page and object caches after changing checkout settings, then test in a private browser window.
The connection wizard fails
- Sign out of other PayPal accounts in the browser and restart the wizard with the intended merchant account.
- Confirm the site uses HTTPS and that a security, firewall, or cookie-blocking tool is not preventing the authorization redirect.
- Verify the WordPress, WooCommerce, and PHP minimums before troubleshooting plugin settings.
- Use Sandbox credentials only in a Sandbox connection; do not mix test and live accounts.
The order is paid but the store did not update
Check the order notes, PayPal transaction record, webhook or return configuration shown by the extension, and any caching or firewall logs. Keep the order unpaid until the transaction is reconciled; do not manually mark every order complete just because a customer reports seeing a PayPal screen.
The amount, tax, or shipping is wrong
Compare the cart total, WooCommerce order total, and PayPal transaction total. Review currency, tax display and calculation, shipping zones, product dimensions, coupons, and rounding. Fix the store rule that generated the wrong total, then repeat the test rather than adjusting individual orders by hand.
Best Value
- Pay one transparent rate per swipe for Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
- Works in conjunction with most downloadable Square point-of-sale apps on your device. Customers can pay, tip and sign directly on your device. Track payments in cash, gift cards and more. Also lets you send receipts via e-mail or text message, makes it easy to apply discounts, keeps a data and sales history log and more.
- Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
- App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).
Refunds or emails do not behave as expected
Confirm whether the refund was initiated from WooCommerce or PayPal and check both records. Review the WooCommerce email settings and the PayPal receipt address. Test a refund and a customer notification in Sandbox before relying on the workflow for real orders.
Costs, availability, and sales claims
There is no single PayPal fee that applies to every WordPress merchant. Rates depend on country, payment type, currency conversion, and the merchant agreement. Use the regional PayPal pricing information for the account’s jurisdiction and include any conversion or dispute costs in your own pricing decision.

Which option fits common WordPress projects?
Several physical products with shipping
Use WooCommerce PayPal Payments. You need product records, inventory, shipping zones, tax configuration, and an order history that standalone buttons do not provide.
One consultant or freelancer service
Use a Buy Button on the service page or send a Payment Link after agreeing on the scope. Add WooCommerce only if you need multiple packages, coupons, customer accounts, or recurring plans.
A donation campaign
Use a standalone button when donors choose from a small number of fixed amounts, or a Payment Link when you will distribute the request through email and social channels. Explain the purpose, currency, and receipt process on the page.
A membership or subscription
Use WooCommerce with a compatible subscription workflow and confirm PayPal reference-transaction and vaulting eligibility before launch. Test renewals and cancellations rather than testing only the first payment.
