Install it with Node.js 22 LTS or newer, or run its published Docker image, then open the /ssh route (the documented local address is http://localhost:2222/ssh). The browser supplies the terminal interface; WebSSH2 still makes a normal SSH connection to your server, so the server address, port, account, authentication method, firewall rules and host-key decision remain essential.

WebSSH2 is an HTML5 web-based terminal emulator and SSH client with optional Telnet support. It translates keyboard input and terminal output between a browser and an SSH connection. That makes it useful on a borrowed computer, a locked-down workstation or a tablet where installing an SSH program is impractical.
It is not a replacement for an SSH server. You still need a reachable target host, an account permitted to log in, the correct SSH port and either a password, a private-key workflow or another method accepted by that server. The gateway also becomes a security boundary: it can handle login material and terminal data, and its logs, backups and administrator account therefore need the same care as the server you are accessing.

Requirements to check before installing
Verify the target SSH service
- Confirm the server is reachable from the machine that will run WebSSH2. Test the intended hostname or IP address and SSH port through the relevant firewall and routing path.
- Confirm the user account is allowed to log in and has the shell, group membership and server-side permissions it needs.
- Record the target server’s public host-key fingerprint through an independent, trusted channel. You will compare this value when the browser asks whether to trust a key.
- If you use public-key authentication, check the account’s
~/.ssh/authorized_keysownership and permissions. The WebSSH2 troubleshooting guidance specifieschmod 600 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys.
Choose where the gateway will run
The npm path is appropriate when you control a Node.js host and want the project files and process manager in your normal deployment layout. The quick start requires Node.js 22 LTS or later. Docker is useful when you prefer an isolated, repeatable container and can expose its web listener through your existing container or reverse-proxy network.

Decide which exact HTTPS origin users will visit, such as the origin represented by https://terminal.example.com. You will use that value in the origin allow-list. Do not wait until after deployment to decide: a wildcard or an overly broad origin rule can let an unintended site initiate browser connections to the gateway.
Deployment choices at a glance
| Decision | Available approach | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Runtime | Node.js 22 LTS or later with npm | Runs WebSSH2 directly on the host; the documented web listener defaults to port 2222. |
| Runtime | Docker published image | Runs the gateway in a container; publish container port 2222 and pass SSH and web settings as environment variables. |
| Authentication | Password, public key or keyboard-interactive | Choose only methods the target SSH service supports and your policy permits. |
| File transfer | SFTP enabled or disabled | Enabling SFTP adds browser-accessible file operations. Keep it disabled when a shell is all you need. |
| Host-key storage | Server, client or hybrid | Controls where known host keys are kept and how unknown keys are presented for approval. |
The Python webssh project is a separate implementation built with Tornado, Paramiko and xterm.js. It may fit an organization that already standardizes on Python, but its configuration and operational model are different from WebSSH2’s.
Install and start WebSSH2
Option 1: npm on a Node.js host
- Install Node.js 22 LTS or a later supported release on the host that will run the gateway.
- Obtain the WebSSH2 project and move into its application directory.
- Install the production dependencies using the project’s documented production-install command, then start the service with its documented start script. Keep the process under a service manager in a real deployment so it restarts predictably and runs as a restricted account.
- Confirm that the web listener is bound to the expected interface and port. With the default listener, browse locally to
http://localhost:2222/ssh.
The local HTTP address is suitable for an initial smoke test. It is not a reason to expose plain HTTP to the public Internet; put TLS in front of the gateway before remote users connect.

Option 2: Docker
- Run the published WebSSH2 container image using your container runtime.
- Publish container port
2222to the host or to the internal network where your reverse proxy can reach it. - Pass the SSH host and other WebSSH2 settings as environment variables. Keep secrets out of shell history and image layers; use your platform’s secret mechanism where available.
- Check the container logs for a successful listener and then open the reverse-proxy HTTPS origin followed by
/ssh.
Whether you use npm or Docker, the SSH connection is made from the WebSSH2 runtime to the target host. A browser that can reach the page does not automatically have network access to the SSH server; the gateway host must have it.
Set the core connection settings
WebSSH2’s configuration reference documents environment variables for the listener, SSH defaults, terminal type, authentication methods and browser origins. A minimal configuration concept looks like this:
WEBSSH2_LISTEN_PORT=2222
WEBSSH2_SSH_HOST=ssh.example.com
WEBSSH2_SSH_PORT=22
WEBSSH2_SSH_TERM=xterm-256color
WEBSSH2_AUTH_ALLOWED=password,publickey
WEBSSH2_HTTP_ORIGINS=https://terminal.example.com
Adapt the values to your environment. The SSH host and port identify the target machine; they are not the browser URL. WEBSSH2_SSH_TERM requests the terminal capability the remote shell should use. The authentication allow-list should contain only methods you intend to offer. If your server relies on keyboard-interactive authentication, configure that method instead of assuming password authentication will cover it.
Listen port and reverse proxy
The documented default web listener is port 2222. You can change the listener to fit an existing service layout, but make the reverse proxy’s upstream and firewall rule match the resulting port. Keep the application listener private when possible and allow only the proxy or an administrative network to reach it directly.
SSH host and non-default SSH ports
Set the target host and port explicitly when all users should reach one known server. If users select a different SSH port, use WebSSH2’s documented port configuration or query-parameter mechanism rather than guessing a URL format. A page that loads successfully can still fail to open a shell if the gateway is pointed at the wrong port.

Harden the gateway before exposing it
Use HTTPS and protected sessions
Terminate TLS at a trusted reverse proxy or configure HTTPS directly in the application. Plain HTTP exposes credentials, terminal keystrokes and output to anyone able to observe the connection. Configure session cookies with the secure and httpOnly attributes, use a strong non-default session secret and set a finite maxAge or equivalent session timeout. A timeout limits the window in which an abandoned browser session remains usable.
Restrict browser origins exactly
Replace wildcard CORS or origin settings with the exact origins that are allowed to connect. An origin includes the scheme, host and port, so https://terminal.example.com is not the same as an HTTP origin or a different subdomain. Remove temporary test origins before production. If a legitimate browser is rejected, compare its address character for character with the configured allow-list.
Limit authentication methods
Allow only the SSH authentication mechanisms you have reviewed. Password login is convenient but increases the value of the gateway to an attacker. Public-key login avoids sending a password through the browser session, but it still requires correct server-side key installation and permissions. Keyboard-interactive may be needed for an MFA or challenge-response setup. Do not enable every method simply because the server supports them.
Keep SFTP off unless it is required
SFTP turns the gateway into a file-transfer interface as well as a shell. If users only need command-line access, leave SFTP disabled. When file transfer is necessary, define who may use it, monitor the additional operations and ensure the account’s filesystem permissions are appropriate. Do not treat SFTP as a harmless convenience: it can expose or modify more data than a narrowly scoped shell workflow.

Protect the gateway host and records
- Run the service with a dedicated, least-privileged operating-system account.
- Restrict inbound access to the reverse proxy or trusted administration networks.
- Protect configuration files, session secrets, container environment data, logs and backups.
- Patch Node.js, the container image and WebSSH2 according to your normal maintenance process.
- Review who can administer the gateway; compromise of that account can expose every SSH destination reachable through it.
Understand host-key verification
SSH host keys prove that the endpoint you reached is the endpoint whose key you accepted previously. A browser terminal should not turn that decision into a casual click. Compare a newly presented fingerprint with the value obtained from an independent trusted channel, such as server-console records or an administrator-controlled inventory.

WebSSH2 supports server, client and hybrid host-key stores:
- Server store: known host keys are maintained by the gateway server. This centralizes trust decisions and is useful when many users should see the same approved keys.
- Client store: trust information is kept on the user side according to the client workflow. This can suit users who manage their own destinations, but it makes consistent administration more difficult.
- Hybrid store: WebSSH2 checks the server store first and asks the browser about an unknown key. It combines centrally approved keys with an interactive path for destinations not yet recorded.
Accept an unknown key only after checking its fingerprint. Reject it when the value differs unexpectedly, and investigate a changed key before trying again. A host-key warning can indicate a legitimate server rebuild, but it can also indicate that traffic is reaching the wrong machine.
Open a terminal in the browser
- Start WebSSH2 and confirm that the listener is reachable through the intended HTTPS origin.
- Navigate to the
/sshroute. For the default local setup, that ishttp://localhost:2222/ssh; for production, use your HTTPS hostname followed by/ssh. - Enter the SSH username and the authentication material requested by the configured method. Supply a password only over the HTTPS session and never paste a private key into an untrusted page.
- When WebSSH2 presents a host key, compare its fingerprint with the trusted record you prepared earlier. Accept it only when it matches; otherwise cancel the connection.
- Wait for the shell prompt, then run a harmless identity or directory command to verify that you reached the intended account and host.
- When finished, exit the shell and close the browser tab. Use the configured session timeout as a backstop, not as a substitute for logging out.
If the target uses a non-default SSH port, set that port through the documented WebSSH2 configuration or supported query parameter before connecting. Do not assume the browser listener’s port 2222 is also the server’s SSH port.
Why Telnet should normally stay disabled
Telnet support is optional legacy compatibility. The WebSSH2 configuration documentation states: “Telnet transmits all data, including credentials, in plain text.” That means anyone able to observe the network can read the login and session contents. Leave Telnet disabled unless a legacy device genuinely requires it and the entire path is a trusted, isolated network with compensating controls. Never enable it merely because an SSH connection has not yet been debugged.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot failures in a fixed order
The page does not load
- Check that the WebSSH2 process or container is running and listening on the configured web port.
- Confirm the reverse proxy upstream points to that port and that its firewall permits the connection.
- Verify the URL path: the terminal route is
/ssh, not the site root alone. - If using HTTPS, inspect the certificate and proxy logs before changing application settings.
The page loads but no shell appears
- Check the configured SSH hostname and port from the WebSSH2 host, not from your laptop alone.
- Confirm the target firewall permits the gateway host’s source address.
- Verify that the account is allowed to log in and that the selected authentication method is enabled on the target.
- Review the host-key prompt. A rejected or mismatched key decision will stop the session by design.
Password or public-key authentication fails
For a password, recheck the username, account status and server authentication policy. For a key, verify that the matching public key is present in the correct account’s authorized_keys, that ownership is correct and that permissions are restrictive; the documented troubleshooting value is chmod 600 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys. Also check parent-directory permissions and server logs, because a correct key can still be ignored when the account’s SSH directory is writable by others.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
The host key changed unexpectedly
Stop and verify the fingerprint through an independent channel. If the server was rebuilt or its host keys were intentionally rotated, update the appropriate server, client or hybrid store only after that verification. Do not delete trust records simply to make the warning disappear.
The terminal opens but clipboard or WebSocket features fail
- Confirm the page is served over HTTPS in the production path.
- Inspect browser permission prompts and any restrictive enterprise browser policy.
- Compare the browser’s exact origin with
WEBSSH2_HTTP_ORIGINSand remove wildcard settings. - Check that the reverse proxy supports WebSocket upgrades and is not buffering or timing out the connection.
The container starts but cannot reach SSH
Test DNS resolution and outbound routing from inside the container’s network namespace. Ensure the target port is allowed by egress rules and that the configured SSH host is not accidentally set to localhost; inside a container, that usually means the container itself, not the intended server.

Operational practices for a shared browser gateway
Separate destinations and privileges
A gateway that can reach multiple production servers deserves a narrower network policy than a gateway dedicated to one development host. Where possible, run separate instances or apply network segmentation so a compromised session cannot freely scan unrelated systems. Give browser users accounts with only the shell and filesystem permissions they need.
Log without leaking secrets
Use application, reverse-proxy and host logs to diagnose failed connections, origin rejections and restarts, but protect those logs as sensitive data. Avoid logging passwords, private keys, session cookies or complete terminal transcripts unless there is a documented, controlled reason. Set retention and access rules for logs and backups.
Test the recovery path
Before relying on WebSSH2 during an outage, verify that administrators have an alternate, trusted path to the server. A gateway failure, expired certificate, broken origin rule or lost session secret should not remove every route to recovery. Document how to rotate host keys, session secrets and certificates without silently accepting an unverified endpoint.
When WebSSH2 is a good fit
WebSSH2 is a practical choice when users need occasional SSH access from managed browsers, when installing a native client is not possible, or when an organization wants a single web entry point in front of an existing SSH estate. It is less suitable as an excuse to place unrestricted administrative SSH on the public Internet. The web gateway adds another service, another credential-handling surface and another set of origin, session and proxy settings to maintain.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose npm when a Node.js service is already part of your operations and you want direct process-level control. Choose Docker when image-based deployment, isolated dependencies and container orchestration are more valuable. In both cases, make the same security decisions: exact origins, strong sessions, least-privilege SSH accounts, verified host keys and disabled features you do not need.
Final deployment checklist
- Node.js 22 LTS or later is installed, or the published WebSSH2 container is running.
- The gateway can reach the intended SSH host and port.
- The target account and authentication method have been tested.
- The server host-key fingerprint was obtained independently and verified at first connection.
- The listener and reverse proxy use the intended ports, with
/sshrouted correctly. - HTTPS is enabled; cookies are secure and HttpOnly; the session secret is non-default; session lifetime is finite.
- The browser-origin allow-list contains only exact, required origins.
- SFTP is disabled unless an approved file-transfer requirement exists.
- Telnet is disabled unless a legacy device on a trusted isolated network requires it.
- Gateway logs, backups, configuration and administrator access are protected.
- An alternate recovery path exists if the browser gateway or its certificate fails.
Once these checks pass, opening a server terminal is straightforward: visit the WebSSH2 /ssh route, authenticate to the target SSH service and verify the host key before accepting the session. The browser changes the interface, not the underlying SSH trust model.
