You do not normally need a product key or separate activation code to use a controller in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on PC. Connect the controller, confirm that Windows detects it, then choose Controller as the active input device in the game.
This guide covers Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) on Windows 10 and Windows 11, whether you own the Battle.net or Steam version. If you mean Modern Warfare II (2022) or Modern Warfare III (2023), the connection and troubleshooting principles are similar, but launcher behavior and menu labels can differ. Activision maintains separate support areas for those releases: Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare II, and Modern Warfare III.

Before you start
- Confirm which game you own: Modern Warfare (2019), not Modern Warfare II or Modern Warfare III.
- Know whether you launch it through Battle.net, Steam, or the current Call of Duty launcher.
- Have a USB cable that supports data, or a PC with working Bluetooth.
- Charge the controller and install any available firmware update from its manufacturer.
- Close unnecessary remapping software, overlays, macro tools, and recording utilities while testing.
Activision lists Battle.net, Steam, Microsoft Store, Epic Games, Windows, Xbox Game Pass, and PC Game Pass as separate platform or service categories in its support options, so troubleshooting can vary by how the game was installed and launched. See the Activision support options if you need to identify the correct edition and platform.
Which controllers work best on Windows?
An Xbox Wireless Controller or another controller that explicitly supports XInput is usually the easiest option on Windows. XInput is the controller interface commonly used by PC games, so compatible devices tend to work with fewer extra software layers.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers can also work, either through native support, Steam Input, or an XInput-emulation layer. Microsoft notes that PlayStation controllers may require Steam Input or DS4Windows for full compatibility in some games. Sony documents USB and Bluetooth PC connections for the DualShock 4 and DualSense; the DualSense instructions cover Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11. Feature support still depends on the game, controller, connection method, and software.
Nintendo Switch Pro controllers and generic DirectInput gamepads are possible secondary cases, but they may need translation through Steam Input and are not guaranteed to expose every control correctly.
Connect the controller to Windows
Recommended first test: USB
- Close Modern Warfare.
- Connect the controller directly to the PC with a data-capable USB cable.
- Turn on the controller and wait for Windows to recognize it.
- Press Win + I to open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices and confirm that the controller appears.
- For a more precise test, press Win + R, type
joy.cpl, and press Enter. - Select the controller, choose Properties, and open the Test tab.
- Move both sticks and press buttons and triggers. Windows should show the corresponding controls responding.
A USB connection is the best diagnostic starting point because it removes Bluetooth pairing, battery, adapter, and wireless-interference variables. Windows 11 should detect most USB controllers automatically when they are plugged in, according to Microsoft’s controller connection guidance.

Connect an Xbox controller over Bluetooth
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn Bluetooth on.
- Hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox logo begins flashing.
- Select Add device > Bluetooth.
- Choose the Xbox controller and wait for Windows to show it as connected.
- Start Modern Warfare and continue to the in-game input settings.
A desktop PC may need a Bluetooth adapter. If pairing succeeds but the game does not respond, remove the controller from Windows, pair it again, or switch to USB for testing.
Connect a DualSense over Bluetooth
- Turn on Bluetooth in Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Make sure the DualSense is off.
- Hold Create and PS together until the light bar starts flashing.
- Choose Add device > Bluetooth, then select Wireless Controller.
- Wait for pairing to finish before launching the game.
Sony’s DualSense PC instructions support USB and Bluetooth connections on Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11. USB may be preferable if you need a more reliable connection or a game-specific advanced feature.
Connect a DualShock 4 over Bluetooth
- Turn on Bluetooth in Windows.
- With the controller off, hold Share and PS until the light bar flashes.
- Open Add device > Bluetooth.
- Select Wireless Controller.
- Test the controller in Windows before starting Modern Warfare.
Sony documents both USB and Bluetooth connection methods for the DualShock 4 in its PlayStation PC gaming guidance.

Possible related settings include Aiming Input Device, Button Layout, Stick Layout Preset, Controller Vibration, and Deadzone Inputs. If the selector does not update after you connect the controller, close and restart the game with the controller already connected.
Configure controller gameplay settings
Leave the default settings in place until basic movement and aiming work. Then adjust one option at a time:
- Button layout: Try Default, Tactical, Bumper Jumper, or a custom layout.
- Stick layout: Choose the arrangement that matches your preferred movement and aiming sticks.
- Horizontal and vertical sensitivity: Controls how quickly the camera turns.
- ADS sensitivity multiplier: Adjusts aiming speed while aiming down sights.
- Aim response curve: Changes how stick movement translates into camera movement.
- Deadzone: Determines how far a stick must move before the game registers input. Too high feels unresponsive; too low can expose stick drift.
- Vibration: Turn it on or off according to preference.
- Trigger, sprint, crouch, and behavior options: Configure these after the device itself is stable.
- Gyro, touchpad, haptics, and adaptive triggers: Availability is specific to the game, controller, connection type, and input layer. Do not assume every DualSense feature works over Bluetooth or in this title.
Test changes in a campaign, private match, firing range, or another low-stakes mode where available. Sensitivity and deadzone settings affect how the controller feels; they do not fix a controller that the game cannot detect.
Steam fixes
Steam Input can help when Steam does not recognize a PlayStation, Nintendo, generic, or unusual controller through the game’s preferred protocol. Valve documents both broad device support and translation through Steam Input in its controller device documentation and Steam Input implementation guide.

- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
- Exit Modern Warfare.
- Open Steam and go to Steam > Settings > Controller.
- Confirm that Steam sees the controller.
- Open the game’s Steam properties and find its game-specific controller setting.
- If you use a PlayStation controller, test one mode at a time: Steam Input enabled, then Steam Input disabled for native support.
- Relaunch the game after changing the setting.
Native support usually means fewer software layers and may preserve more natural device identification. Steam Input is useful when the game does not recognize the controller directly, but it may present the device as Xbox-style input. That can explain Xbox button prompts on a functioning PlayStation controller.
Do not run Steam Input, DS4Windows, reWASD, JoyToKey, manufacturer mapping software, and other virtual-controller tools simultaneously. Multiple translators can create duplicate devices, conflicting profiles, or inputs that look like mouse and keyboard commands.
For a Battle.net copy, Steam Input is available only as an optional workaround if you add the game to Steam as a non-Steam game and launch it through Steam. It is not part of a normal direct Battle.net launch.

When the controller still does not work
Windows does not detect it
- Replace the USB cable with one explicitly made for data and charging.
- Try a different USB port and avoid hubs.
- Charge the controller fully.
- Remove the Bluetooth device from Windows and pair it again.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Update controller firmware with the manufacturer’s official tool.
- Run
joy.cpland check whether the device appears and responds on the Test tab. - Test the controller on another PC or in another game.
If it fails in Windows and in multiple games, suspect the cable, Bluetooth adapter, firmware, or controller hardware rather than Modern Warfare.
Windows detects it, but Modern Warfare does not
- Connect the controller before launching the game.
- Close and reopen the game after connecting it.
- Set the in-game input device to Controller.
- On Steam, test the per-game Steam Input setting in both enabled and disabled modes.
- On Battle.net, close Steam and all remapping tools.
- Disconnect other gamepads, wheels, fight sticks, and virtual controllers.
- Disable overlays temporarily.
- Restart the launcher and Windows.
It works in menus but not during a match
- Check whether moving the mouse or pressing a keyboard key has switched the active input back to keyboard and mouse.
- Confirm that the input-device selector has not reverted.
- Disconnect other input devices temporarily.
- Check whether a remapping profile is sending mouse or keyboard signals.
- Test a default controller profile before restoring custom bindings.
Buttons work, but the layout or prompts are wrong
Check whether the controller is being passed through as Xbox-style XInput or as its native PlayStation device. Change the Steam Input mode, or disable the translation layer, and test again. If a PlayStation controller is emulated as XInput, Xbox button glyphs may remain even though the controller is working correctly. Rebind controls only after the device type is stable.
The controller disconnects during matches
- Use USB while diagnosing the problem.
- Keep the controller charged.
- Re-pair Bluetooth if the connection drops repeatedly.
- Check Bluetooth power-management settings if Windows repeatedly suspends the adapter.
- Move the Bluetooth adapter away from possible USB 3.0 interference sources where practical.
- Update controller firmware.
- Test without overlays, recording software, or remappers.
Xbox versus PlayStation controllers on PC
| Controller type | Typical setup | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox or XInput | Usually connect by USB or Bluetooth and select Controller in the game. | Wireless use may require Bluetooth or an Xbox Wireless Adapter, depending on the PC and setup. |
| DualShock 4 | USB, Bluetooth, Steam Input, or an XInput-emulation layer. | May require extra configuration and may show Xbox-style prompts. |
| DualSense | USB or Bluetooth, with native or Steam Input support depending on the game. | Haptics, adaptive triggers, touchpad, and gyro functions are not guaranteed. |
| Generic or Nintendo controller | Often benefits from Steam Input. | DirectInput devices may expose only some controls or require translation. |
For the least setup friction, an Xbox or explicitly XInput-compatible controller is generally the safest choice. A PlayStation controller is a reasonable option if you already own one or prefer its design, but expect prompts and advanced features to vary.
Remapping software and security considerations
Prefer the game’s native settings and Steam Input before installing an additional remapper. If you do use third-party software, obtain it from the official project or vendor, use only one input-translation layer at a time, and avoid macros, automation, rapid-fire functions, or profiles that alter gameplay behavior.
A remapping utility is not automatically prohibited merely because it translates controller input, but Call of Duty’s rules and enforcement policies can change. Review the current Call of Duty Security and Enforcement Policy before using third-party software. Troubleshooting a compatibility problem is different from endorsing gameplay automation.
When to contact support
Contact the controller manufacturer if the device is missing from Windows, fails in joy.cpl, disconnects across multiple games, or shows signs of a cable, firmware, Bluetooth, or hardware problem.
Contact Activision if Windows and other games recognize the controller but this specific game or launcher continues to reject it after you have tested USB, removed conflicting software, and restarted the launcher. Activision’s support selector lets you choose the game, platform or service, and issue category.
