Hold a Nether Star and right-click the placed Awful Ghast Altar to summon the Awful Ghast. The altar is added by the Stalwart Dungeons mod, not vanilla Minecraft. Modrinth’s mod listing and the Awful Ghast Altar item reference both describe the Nether Star interaction.
How to use the Awful Ghast Altar
- Make sure Stalwart Dungeons is installed in your Minecraft Java Edition world.
- Find the Awful Ghast Altar in an Awful Dungeon.
- Hold a Nether Star and right-click the altar. This releases the Awful Ghast.
- Prepare for a fight: the boss attacks at range before switching to close-range attacks.
The mod listing describes Awful Dungeons in the Soul Sand Valley and Warped Forest. It does not specify a required weapon, armor set, or arena strategy.

Check the mod and Minecraft version if it does not work
Stalwart Dungeons is a Forge mod for Minecraft Java Edition. Its Modrinth listing names Minecraft versions 1.16.5, 1.18.2, 1.19.2, and 1.20.1. Confirm that the mod is installed and that your Minecraft and Forge versions match a version supported by the listing: Stalwart Dungeons on Modrinth.

What to expect after activation
The Awful Ghast uses ranged projectiles that temporarily prevent you from using your held item and set you on fire, then switches to close-range attacks. Listed drops include Awful Crystals and an Awful Gun, according to the Planet Minecraft mod listing.
Some third-party guidance claims an Igniter is needed, but the mod listing and altar references specify a Nether Star. Use the Nether Star interaction rather than an Igniter.
