Keep holding Meta while you press the trigger, but do not hold the trigger down: holding it is associated with starting a recording.
After the capture, check the Quest Gallery. You can then download the image through the Meta Horizon mobile app or copy it to a computer with a USB-C data cable.
The Quest 3 screenshot shortcut
- Open the game, app, or headset view you want to capture.
- Press and hold the Meta button on the right Touch Plus controller.
- While holding Meta, quickly press and release the right trigger.
- Wait for the shutter sound, visual confirmation, or capture notification.
The Meta button is the small system button on the right controller. The trigger is the large front-facing finger trigger—not the grip button.
Screenshot versus recording: tap the trigger for a still image. Do not hold the trigger. A longer trigger press while using the Meta-button shortcut is associated with screen recording. This distinction is described in Meta’s support forum.

If nothing happens, retry the shortcut with the right Meta button held continuously until after the trigger tap. Pressing the left controller’s Meta button, using the grip button, or releasing Meta too early are common mistakes.
Use the Camera controls instead
If you prefer an on-screen command—or your controller is disconnected—you can use the Quest Camera interface:
- Press the Meta button to open the universal menu or current system navigation panel.
- Select the Camera icon.
- Choose Screenshot.
- Follow any countdown or framing prompt.
The Camera icon, button placement, and labels can change with Horizon OS updates. Some versions place the screenshot control in a bottom menu bar. The controller shortcut is usually better during gameplay because opening Camera can interrupt the app or move your attention away from the scene. Hand tracking may let you navigate the Camera controls without controllers when the current software exposes those controls, but do not rely on an undocumented universal hand gesture. Voice input is also not a guaranteed screenshot method on every Quest software build.

How to confirm the screenshot worked
Look or listen for one or more of these signs:
- A camera shutter sound.
- A brief visual confirmation or capture notification.
- A new image in the headset’s Gallery or media area.
The exact animation, sound, and notification design can vary between Horizon OS versions. If you do not see a confirmation, open Gallery and check for a newly created image rather than immediately repeating the shortcut.
Where Quest 3 screenshots are saved
A screenshot is first saved as Quest media on the headset. It should be reviewable in the headset’s Gallery, where you can inspect, delete, or share it.
That does not mean it instantly appears on your phone. Mobile availability can depend on the headset and phone connection, account pairing, app permissions, sync status, and whether the Meta Horizon app is open. Do not assume every screenshot is immediately uploaded to the cloud or camera roll.
Transfer a screenshot to your phone
- Install and sign in to the official Meta Horizon mobile app.
- Make sure the phone and headset are paired and connected as required by the current app.
- Open the app’s Gallery or media section.
- Select the screenshot.
- Use the download or save control to put it in the phone’s camera roll.
Meta has redesigned and renamed parts of its mobile app over time, so the exact menu labels may differ. If the image is not visible, first confirm it appears in the headset Gallery, then leave the headset awake and connected for a short time and reopen or refresh the app. A third-party walkthrough describes the Gallery download flow at Rebellion Support.

Transfer a screenshot to a computer with USB
USB transfer is the most practical fallback when wireless syncing is delayed or unavailable.
- Connect Quest 3 to the computer with a USB-C data cable.
- Put on the headset and unlock or wake it.
- Approve the file-access prompt if one appears.
- Open the Quest storage on the computer.
- Look in the media or screenshots area and copy the image to the computer.
Folder names and exact paths can vary with Horizon OS releases, so use the media or screenshots folders rather than relying on an old fixed path. A charge-only USB-C cable will not provide file transfer. If the computer does not detect Quest 3, disconnect and reconnect it, try another USB port or known data cable, and make sure the headset is awake before looking for the permission prompt.
Why the screenshot may not match what you see
A Quest screenshot represents a captured system viewport. It is not necessarily a pixel-for-pixel record of the entire binocular field of view perceived through both lenses. The saved image can have a different crop, aspect ratio, or field of view, and cast output can be framed differently too.
This matters when a HUD element or mixed-reality object sits near the edge of your view. A community discussion documents cases where casting and screenshots did not align with the wearer’s full view; treat that as a practical limitation that can vary by software and app, not as one fixed crop for every Quest 3.

For mixed reality, distinguish between:
- A normal system screenshot of the rendered view.
- An app’s own camera or photo mode.
- Developer access to passthrough camera data.
Meta’s Passthrough Camera API documentation distinguishes passthrough-camera access from Media Projection, which represents the user’s rendered point of view. Neither should be treated as a promise that one ordinary screenshot contains everything visible through the lenses.
If the shortcut does nothing
- Confirm you are holding the right controller’s Meta button.
- Tap the right trigger while Meta remains held.
- Use a quick press, not a prolonged trigger hold.
- Check that the controller is connected and tracking.
- Try the Camera app’s Screenshot control.
- Test the shortcut in the Quest home environment.
- Restart the headset.
- Update Horizon OS if Camera controls are missing or abnormal.
- If it fails only in one app, treat that as an app-specific limitation rather than proof that the headset is defective.
- Contact Meta support with the headset software version and affected app if every capture method fails.
Meta support has advised updating the headset when Camera-related controls or settings are missing.

A bad screenshot can result from a temporary Horizon OS capture bug, an app-specific rendering problem, an incomplete media write, storage or Gallery indexing trouble, or unusual Camera settings. Community reports describe black corners, artifacts, stuttering, and unsupported-media cases, but those reports do not prove a universal Quest 3 hardware defect.
Work through this checklist:
- Restart Quest 3.
- Take a test screenshot in the home environment.
- Check whether the problem affects one app or every app.
- Return unusual Camera settings or aspect-ratio options to standard values.
- Check that the headset has adequate free storage.
- Update Horizon OS.
- Try both Meta Horizon mobile transfer and USB transfer.
- If screenshots, recordings, and casting all show artifacts, contact Meta support.
If a thumbnail is missing, check Gallery after restarting and verify whether a file was actually created. A problem limited to one game may be caused by that app’s rendering or protected-content behavior.

Quest 3 screenshots versus PC VR captures
The Quest shortcut captures the Quest headset’s system view. When playing a PC VR title through SteamVR or another PC connection, that may not be the same as the PC-rendered frame at the game’s native resolution.
For the highest-quality image from a PC VR game, use the game’s own screenshot command, SteamVR’s capture feature, or a desktop capture tool. Use the Quest shortcut when you specifically want the view being presented through the headset.
Are Quest 3 screenshots 2D?
Do not assume every Quest capture workflow produces the same ordinary flat image. Capture modes and apps can use different formats, aspect ratios, or stereoscopic presentation. If you plan to edit or publish the file, inspect its format and dimensions after transferring it.
