To repeat backup tracks in an OBS-based YouTube radio stream, add an OBS VLC Video Source, load the audio files in playlist order, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed on the streaming computer, and its architecture must match OBS (64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC). This repeats the tracks; it does not, by itself, detect a failed main audio feed and switch to the backup.
Set up a looping backup playlist in OBS
- Prepare the tracks. Put the audio files you want to use in an accessible folder on the computer running OBS. Play each file first to confirm it works and arrange the intended order.
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed. Match its architecture to OBS: if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
- Add the source. In OBS, select the scene that will be sent to YouTube, use the Sources panel’s add control, and choose VLC Video Source. Add the files to its playlist in the desired order.
- Set playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist to start the list again after its final item. Leave shuffle off if you need the tracks to play in a fixed order. OBS documents the playlist and loop controls; available options may vary with your installed OBS version.
- Check the scene and audio. Make sure the VLC source is active in the scene you intend to stream and watch the OBS audio meter while it plays. Make a short test recording or use a private or unlisted test stream, then listen to confirm the audio is present.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Start the encoder and check the preview and audio in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to obtain these details. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the stream.
- Test the handoff. Let the last playlist item finish and verify that the first begins again. If you also expect the backup playlist to take over when the main programme source fails, test that separately; the loop setting does not establish or configure that switch.
Choose the right kind of backup
Backup audio content
A backup audio playlist is alternate programme material—such as tracks to play if your main audio is unavailable. OBS’s VLC Video Source can play a list of media files and loop the list. A repeating playlist is not the same as automatic failover: the documented loop control does not say OBS will detect a failed primary feed and switch sources. Automatic switching needs a separate source-switching setup, followed by a test that simulates the failure you expect.
Backup ingestion for YouTube
YouTube’s HLS setup has a separate Backup server URL for a backup encoder ingestion path. That is a second route for sending a stream to YouTube, not a playlist of alternate songs. YouTube’s HLS instructions specify TS segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and segment durations from 1 to 4 seconds. YouTube also says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments instead of a continuous stream. These are HLS-specific requirements, not generic settings for an OBS playlist sent over RTMP. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.
Pick a setup for your actual need
| Need | Approach | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one local audio file | OBS Media Source with Loop enabled | Loops a single file rather than an ordered list. OBS Media Sources |
| Repeat several local tracks | OBS VLC Video Source with Loop Playlist enabled | Requires VLC installed with the architecture matching OBS. OBS Media Sources |
| Restart a local streaming process if it exits | An automated FFmpeg or service workflow is one possible technical approach | Requires process or server administration; examples are not a guarantee of uninterrupted operation. RadioTech Studio’s operational guide is dated May 29, 2026. |
| Keep a second YouTube ingest path | YouTube HLS Backup server URL with an HLS-capable encoder | This is ingestion redundancy, not alternate audio content, and HLS has higher latency than RTMP. YouTube HLS setup |
Copyright and continuous-play checks
Before using backup tracks in a public radio stream, confirm that you have the rights needed to play them on YouTube. A playlist looping correctly is a technical result, not permission to broadcast its contents. YouTube’s encoder setup information also lists cloud services for continuous pre-recorded streams; verify any service’s current features and terms directly before choosing it.
