How to Add a Changing Track Title to a 24/7 YouTube Music Stream

To show the current song on a 24/7 YouTube music stream, put a now-playing overlay in the video scene sent to YouTube. The overlay must get the title and artist from the system that is actually playing the music—and update when that system advances. Changing the YouTube broadcast title is not a substitute: it describes the broadcast video, not each track.

How the track title gets onto the stream

There are three separate pieces: the live video is the broadcast; the music player, playlist, or media files provide track information; and a graphic or text overlay makes that information visible in the outgoing picture. The overlay belongs in the composition viewers see, not merely in a player window on your computer.

Before choosing an overlay, identify which application or service plays the audio. Then check where the overlay gets the current title and artist, and whether that information changes in sync with the music. A label that looks right but reads stale or unrelated metadata will not solve the problem.

Option 1: Add a browser-source overlay in OBS

In an OBS workflow, use a now-playing overlay that can receive track information, then add its browser content to the scene being sent to YouTube. A browser source used for the overlay is distinct from a browser source used to play music: displaying a label does not itself tell the overlay what song is playing.

One community listing, Music on Stream, describes a browser-based overlay with styling options and title inputs that can include YouTube chapters or video-description playlists. Its listing names YouTube, YouTube Music, Spotify, SoundCloud, Deezer, Pretzel, and Epidemic Sound as supported sources. That is a lead to investigate, not a guarantee that every player, playlist, or OBS setup will work. Check the tool’s current installation instructions and confirm that its input follows your actual audio source. The listing reports a first release on April 12, 2024, and a last update on September 18, 2025: Music on Stream on the OBS Project forum.

  1. Identify the playback source. Note whether music comes from a local playlist, a browser player, a hosted playout service, or another application. The overlay’s title source needs to match that playback path.
  2. Set up the overlay’s title input. Follow the overlay’s current instructions for connecting the relevant player, playlist, chapters, or other metadata source. Do not assume that any YouTube playlist embedded in a scene automatically exposes track names to an overlay.
  3. Add the overlay to the OBS scene. In the scene used for the live output, add a Browser source and use the overlay’s current URL or configuration as its instructions specify. Arrange it over the visual background so it is legible without obscuring important content.
  4. Check transitions before going live. Play a sequence with identifiable titles and verify that the displayed title changes when the audio changes. Also check what happens when music pauses, the player reconnects, or a track repeats.
  5. Confirm the outgoing composition. Preview the scene OBS will send to YouTube. The overlay must be visible in that composition; a title shown only in a separate player window will not appear in the broadcast.

Music on Stream’s listing says its overlay can hide when music pauses. Verify that behavior and the title source in your own configuration rather than assuming a feature applies to every playback setup.

Option 2: Use a hosted playout service’s Now Playing overlay

If the music rotation already runs inside a hosted playout service, its own Now Playing overlay may be the simplest fit. Playout.video’s guide says its overlay reads file metadata and updates as content rotates. It also notes a meaningful limitation: if the same item simply loops, the displayed information does not change. This option is less suitable when the audio is playing somewhere outside that playout system.

Check that the media files contain the title and artist metadata you want displayed, and verify that the overlay updates as scheduled items change. Playout.video’s guide is dated July 9, 2026; consult its current interface and instructions before relying on specific controls: Playout.video Now Playing overlay guide.

Choose by following the metadata

The important difference between overlay options is not their visual theme but the path the track information takes from the player to the picture.

  • Playback: Which system is actually producing the music viewers hear?
  • Title source: Does the overlay read playback information, a playlist or chapter list, or metadata embedded in media files?
  • Advancement: Does it change when the audio source advances, and what does it show on a pause, reconnect, or repeat?
  • Composition: Is the overlay included in the video sent to YouTube?

The available product descriptions document examples, not a head-to-head reliability comparison. Test the exact combination of player, metadata source, and overlay you intend to use.

Why changing YouTube’s broadcast title does not label every song

YouTube’s Live Streaming API treats the broadcast title as information about the broadcast video. The official API reference says, “The broadcast represents exactly one YouTube video.” The API overview distinguishes the live stream sent by the channel owner from the broadcast viewers see. Neither establishes a broadcast-title field that automatically changes with each music track. See the LiveBroadcasts API reference and YouTube Live Streaming API overview.

For a changing title inside the picture, use an overlay whose input follows the music source. Repeatedly editing the broadcast title is not a dependable per-track display method established by those API documents.

Common problems and what to check

  • The title never appears: Check that the overlay is in the active OBS scene or hosted output, and that its browser content has loaded. A separate player window is not part of the outgoing composition.
  • The title appears but stays stale: Confirm which source supplies the metadata and whether that source advances alongside the audio. A playlist or chapter list only helps if the overlay can use it in your specific setup.
  • The title does not change when an item repeats: A repeated loop may not count as a new item transition. Playout.video specifically says its file-metadata overlay does not change when the same item loops.
  • The label shows the wrong song: Compare the displayed metadata with the system actually producing the audio. If playback and title data come from different playlists or services, their timing can diverge.
  • The overlay remains visible during silence: Check whether the overlay supports hiding on pause and whether that behavior applies to your playback source. Music on Stream’s listing says it hides automatically when music pauses, but verify this in your setup.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you also need the 24/7 YouTube stream to keep running without a computer at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube. Its three steps are: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo streams uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. For a changing track label, make sure the uploaded video or playlist workflow already gives you the title presentation you want; StreamNeo’s stated features do not promise to generate or update a separate now-playing overlay.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
  • Uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
  • Monthly: $9.99 per month.
