How to Add a Chat Box to Your YouTube Livestream

To show YouTube chat inside your livestream video, create a chat overlay with a service such as Streamlabs, then add its URL to OBS as a Browser Source. OBS does not include a built-in on-stream chat overlay; its documented approach is to embed a third-party overlay in a Browser Source. OBS Project’s chat FAQ explains the distinction.

What you need for an on-screen chat box

You need a chat-widget URL and broadcasting software that can display a web page as a source. This walkthrough uses Streamlabs for the widget and OBS Studio for the scene. Streamlabs describes its Chat Box as a widget that can be added to OBS and compatible streaming software; OBS also names StreamElements as an overlay provider in its alerts and chat tutorial.

This overlay is part of the video scene sent to YouTube. It is different from keeping chat open in a dock or pop-out window for yourself while you produce the stream. No particular physical product is required by the documented setup.

Add a Streamlabs Chat Box to OBS

  1. Open the Chat Box widget. Sign in to Streamlabs and open the Chat Box from its dashboard or widgets area. Streamlabs’ Chat Box setup guide covers configuring the widget. Dashboard labels can change, so follow the current widget instructions if the navigation differs.
  2. Set how messages should appear. Adjust the available Chat Box options for the look and behavior you want. Streamlabs documents settings including message fade timing and chat delay. Choose a delay appropriate to your moderation workflow, and avoid making messages so brief that viewers cannot read them.
  3. Copy the widget URL. Use Streamlabs’ instructions to locate and copy the Chat Box widget URL. Treat this URL as private: anyone with access to it may be able to view or use the overlay. Streamlabs documents where to find widget URLs in its widget URL guide.
  4. Add a Browser Source in OBS. In OBS, select the scene where chat should appear. In the Sources panel, select +, choose Browser, create a new source, and paste the Streamlabs widget URL into its URL field.
  5. Set the source dimensions. Set the Browser Source width and height to suit the area you intend the chat to occupy in the scene. Streamlabs’ URL instructions also describe adjusting FPS when needed. Use dimensions that fit the scene rather than assuming the widget should cover the full canvas.
  6. Position and size it. Select the Browser Source in the OBS preview and move or resize it so messages do not cover gameplay, captions, alerts, or other important elements. Check the composition at the final video size; a box that looks readable in the editor may be too small in the delivered stream.
  7. Test before going live. Preview the scene and confirm that messages render, remain legible, and do not overlap essential content. If possible, check the result from a viewer-facing preview or recording rather than relying only on the OBS canvas.

Chat overlay URL or YouTube chat iframe?

Choose based on where you want chat to appear. A widget URL added as a Browser Source becomes an element of the broadcast scene. YouTube’s iframe guidance is for embedding live chat on a website; it does not, by itself, add chat to the encoded video scene.

YouTube live chat iframe On a website that embeds the chat Follow YouTube’s website embedding guidance; this is not an OBS scene overlay

YouTube explains its chat and website embedding options in Use live chat during your live stream or Premiere. For a scene overlay, use the provider-widget-and-Browser-Source route.

Make the overlay readable and manageable

  • Keep the chat area large enough to read at the size viewers will see, while leaving key gameplay and on-screen information unobstructed.
  • Use the widget’s message timing and delay settings intentionally. A delay may help moderation, but it also means the overlay is not a real-time transcript.
  • Review the scene before each broadcast if you change the widget, URL, source dimensions, or layout. A Browser Source can remain in a scene even when its contents or placement need attention.
  • If you only need to read chat while producing, use a dock or separate chat window instead of adding it as a scene source; that keeps it out of the video.

Troubleshooting a missing or awkward chat box

  • The source is blank: Check that the URL was copied from the intended widget and pasted into the Browser Source URL field. Reopen the widget dashboard and confirm its current setup, then refresh or recreate the source if necessary.
  • The overlay is clipped or too small: Adjust the Browser Source width and height, then resize and reposition it in the OBS preview. Check the result at the stream’s viewing size.
  • Messages appear too briefly or too late: Revisit the Chat Box settings for fade timing and delay, then preview the scene again.
  • The overlay covers important content: Move or resize the source, or reserve a dedicated area of the scene for chat.
  • You expected YouTube’s website embed to show in OBS: The YouTube iframe route embeds chat on a website; use a chat widget URL as an OBS Browser Source for an overlay in the video.
