How do I stop OBS from freezing when looping a video overnight? Start by checking the loop setting, then test playback hardware decoding on and off, simplify the scene, and inspect a log from the session that failed. On Windows, also test with Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS) disabled and reboot. None of these settings is a universal fix: first determine whether OBS itself, only the preview, or the recorded output is freezing.
First identify what is freezing
“OBS froze” can describe several different problems. The OBS window may stop responding while the computer remains usable; the preview may stop updating even though recording continues; or the recording may keep gaining duration while showing a single frame. A missing or damaged recording after an interruption is another issue. These symptoms do not establish the same cause, so note exactly what happened and use the log from that session rather than guessing.
- OBS process or window is unresponsive: note whether the rest of the system responds, and save the affected session log and any crash information.
- Preview is stuck: check whether the recording or stream output continued before concluding that OBS itself hung.
- Recording duration advances but its picture is frozen: treat this as an output, encoding, or source symptom; the symptom alone does not identify which one.
- Recording is missing or corrupt after an interruption: change the recording container for future sessions, but do not mistake that protection for a runtime fix.
Before changing settings, record the OBS version, operating system, source type, video file type and codec if known, whether the whole computer or just OBS became unresponsive, whether recording continued, and what the resulting file shows.
Check that the video source is actually set to loop
For one lecture file: use Media Source
In the scene, select the Media Source and open its properties. Confirm that Loop is enabled. The OBS Media Sources guide says this option is off by default; without it, a file plays to its end rather than starting over. Restart playback when source becomes active is a separate setting, on by default. It controls what happens when the source becomes active, not whether a completed file loops. See the OBS Media Sources guide (dated January 11, 2022).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The same guide lists hardware decoding as off by default and explains that it uses the GPU when that GPU has a suitable decoder. Test it both ways, changing only this setting between otherwise identical runs. A difference in repeatable results is useful evidence for your setup; turning it on or off is not a guaranteed cure.
For a playlist: use VLC Video when you need it
If you need a playlist or support for a format that works better with VLC, use the VLC Video source and verify Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed; with 64-bit OBS, the guide requires 64-bit VLC. For a single local lecture file, Media Source is the simpler first test. The relevant choice depends on whether you need playlist or format support, not on an assumption that one source is inherently more stable.

Reduce scene and rendering workload
OBS composites and renders a scene using GPU resources. Extra sources and complex scenes can demand resources even when a source is not visible. For a controlled test, duplicate or simplify the scene and remove unnecessary filters, browser sources, overlays, and other sources. Keep the lecture video at no higher resolution than the output actually needs; use a lower-resolution copy only if it is sufficient for that output. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether the simpler scene changes the symptom.
The OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide (dated June 12, 2021) explains how scene complexity, sources, filters, and resolution contribute to workload. It does not establish that rendering load is the cause of a particular overnight freeze.

On Windows, compare a run with HAGS disabled
OBS identifies Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling as a possible source of performance problems and failures with OBS and hardware encoders, and recommends disabling it as a troubleshooting step when performance issues or freezing occur. This is a Windows-specific test, not an explanation for every freeze.
- In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings.
- Turn off Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling, if the setting is available.
- Restart the computer, then repeat the same OBS test with the same source and scene.
- If the comparison does not help, restore the original setting rather than treating the change as a fix.
Availability and labels can vary by Windows version and graphics hardware. Follow OBS’s HAGS troubleshooting guide (dated May 7, 2023) for its guidance.

Reproduce the failure and inspect the right log
A log from an unrelated session may not contain the failure. First run a controlled test using the same source and scene, and note when and how the symptom appears. A short test can expose an immediate problem, but it cannot prove that an overnight run will remain stable.
- After a session that includes the problem, open Help > Log Files in OBS and use the upload option for the current log.
- Review the uploaded log with the OBS Log Analyzer.
- When asking for help, include the affected-session log and any crash information, along with the OBS version, operating system, source type, media details, and a precise description of what froze.
The analyzer page has no publication date shown. Its guidance warns that interrupted MP4 or MOV recordings can be corrupted and unrecoverable. For recording sessions where interruption is a concern, choose MKV or FLV; if your editing or delivery workflow needs MP4, remux the recording in OBS afterward. Container choice reduces one risk to the file—it does not prevent OBS from freezing. See the OBS Log Analyzer.

Rule out overlays and other capture software
OBS documents that graphics-hooking applications can cause crashes or unusual behavior. If you run overlays, another screen recorder, or another capture tool, close them temporarily and repeat the same test. This is a diagnostic comparison, not proof of a conflict unless the behavior changes reproducibly. OBS’s Known Application Conflicts guide (dated August 25, 2021) describes this category of conflict.
Use a controlled troubleshooting sequence
- Write down the OBS version, operating system, video file type and codec if known, source type, what exactly froze, and whether recording continued.
- For Media Source, check Loop. For VLC Video, check Loop Playlist and confirm the required VLC installation and architecture.
- Test hardware decoding on and off, changing no other setting between runs.
- Repeat with a minimal scene, removing unnecessary filters, browser sources, overlays, and other sources. Lower media resolution only if it remains adequate for the output.
- On Windows, test HAGS disabled, reboot, and repeat the same run. Restore the setting if it makes no difference.
- Close overlays and other recording or capture software for a controlled comparison if you use them.
- Run a sufficiently long test for your use case, then upload and inspect the log from any session that exhibits the problem. Do not call a short successful run proof of overnight stability.
- Record to MKV or FLV if interruption could put an MP4 or MOV at risk; remux afterward if needed.
The OBS System Requirements page (dated August 25, 2021) also notes that requirements depend on workload. The cause in an individual case remains uncertain without the affected-session log and details such as operating system, OBS version, source, and media codec.
