Steam Deck: add a community controller layout

Open Library and select the game.

On the game’s details page, select the controller icon to open its controller settings.

Open the current layout, then choose Community Layouts.

Browse the shared configurations, select one that suits your controller and preferred play style, and apply it.

On desktop Steam
Open the selected game’s controller configuration and browse community configurations. Steam confirms that community configurations are an option when a Steam Controller configuration is not working, but the available support material does not establish current desktop menu labels. Use the wording shown in your own client rather than assuming the Steam Deck steps apply unchanged. Steam Controller support

Choose a layout that matches the game
Before applying a layout, consider whether the game accepts gamepad input. Steam says gamepad-only styles work only in games with gamepad support. Flexible styles can instead map keyboard, mouse, or gamepad commands, which can help when a game expects keyboard or mouse input. Also check that the configuration is intended for your controller and fits how you want to play; those preferences are personal rather than a Steam compatibility guarantee. Steam Controller support
If the layout does not work

Check the game’s input support. A layout built around gamepad-only commands may not work properly in a game without gamepad support.

Test the Steam Overlay. Steam identifies the overlay as important to controller functionality. When supported and enabled, its default shortcut is Shift+Tab. Account for external launchers. Non-Steam games and games that use external launchers may have overlay or launch limitations, so do not assume every title will behave like a game launched directly through Steam.
What controller support labels mean
Steam’s Full Controller Support label means the game can be downloaded, launched, set up, and played using only a controller. Partial Controller Support means some tasks may still require a mouse or keyboard. A community layout cannot guarantee controller-only operation where the game itself requires other input.
