How to Add a Countdown and Sleep Timer Graphic to a YouTube Ambience Stream

Use an OBS Browser Source to place a countdown over an ambience stream, then test how it behaves when scenes change or the source reloads.

To put a visible countdown over a YouTube ambience stream, add a timer to your OBS scene as a Browser Source, position it above the video, and test what happens when the source reloads. A timer graphic only displays a countdown: it does not pause viewers’ playback or end your livestream. If you mean YouTube’s Sleep Timer, that is a separate viewer-side control.

Choose the kind of timer you need

First decide whether the stream needs a countdown to a planned end or whether you want viewers to control when their own playback stops. A creator’s overlay is visible in the stream output; it cannot make every viewer’s YouTube player pause.

  • Duration countdown: counts down from a chosen length, such as two hours.
  • Countdown to a clock time: targets a particular end time. This may be a better fit if the stream should finish at the same time regardless of when it starts.
  • Viewer playback timer: lets an individual viewer pause playback after a chosen duration, without adding a graphic to the stream.

A countdown graphic does not stop the broadcast when it reaches zero. If you need a full-screen ending, plan a separate scene or end the stream yourself.

Pick a way to provide the timer

Method Where it runs Best suited to Consideration
Hosted timer URL in an OBS Browser Source A timer webpage loaded inside OBS A ready-made graphic and configuration It depends on the service and its URL loading correctly. Check its current terms, availability, pricing, and privacy implications.
Local HTML timer in a Browser Source A page on your computer, loaded by OBS Using a local file instead of relying on a hosted timer page You need to obtain or create the page and configure it.
Timer application writing to a text file An external app supplies text to an OBS text source Using a timer app to control the displayed text There are more components to configure; verify the app’s compatibility with your OBS and operating system.
YouTube Sleep Timer The viewer’s YouTube player Pausing one viewer’s playback after a duration It is not a creator overlay.

Hosted timer: TimerBox example

TimerBox documents a workflow in which you configure a timer, copy its OBS source URL, add a Browser Source in OBS, paste the URL, and enter the source width and height manually. Its page says the builder and ten free themes do not require an account and have no watermark; it also says some other themes are paid. These are TimerBox’s own claims and can change, so check the current service page before relying on them: TimerBox OBS timer.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Local HTML or text-file timer

OBS Browser Source can load either a URL or a local file. A different approach is to use a timer application that writes its output to a text file, then add an OBS text source and enable its file-reading option. The OBS forum resource Countdown Timer / Stream Timer v4.0 describes that method; its listing was last updated April 23, 2022, so it does not establish compatibility with every current OBS release or operating system.

Add the timer to an OBS scene

OBS calls its embedded web-page input a Browser Source. The OBS documentation describes it as a browser you can add directly to OBS and says Browser Source is available on Windows and macOS, and through official packages on Linux. Exact labels can vary by OBS version. See the OBS Browser Source documentation.

  1. Choose or configure the timer. Set a duration or target time using the timer service or local timer you chose. If the timer is hosted, copy its source URL.
  2. Add a source in the scene. In OBS, select the scene for the ambience stream. In Sources, choose the add button and select Browser. Name the source so it is easy to identify.
  3. Load the timer. For a hosted timer, enter its URL. For a local HTML page, enable Local file and select the page. For a text-file timer, add a text source and enable its file-reading option, then choose the timer’s output file.
  4. Set the source dimensions. Enter a width and height that fit the graphic. A compact overlay needs only enough space for its timer; a full-screen countdown slate can use the stream canvas dimensions. A timer URL may carry the timer settings, but OBS still needs its own width and height values.
  5. Layer and position it. In the Sources list, place the timer above the ambience video. Resize and move it in the preview. For a floating overlay, use a transparent page background; for a full-screen slate, use a solid background if the timer page supports one.
  6. Check readability at stream size. Preview the scene at the intended canvas size. Make sure the digits remain legible over both bright and dark parts of the footage; reposition them or add a background treatment if needed.

OBS’s documented default Browser Source CSS sets the background to transparent, removes page margins, and hides overflow. If a hosted or local page renders differently, inspect that page’s own styling and the source dimensions.

Keep the countdown behavior predictable

A duration timer and a countdown to a fixed clock time behave differently when OBS reloads the source. TimerBox says its basic duration timer returns to its full duration after a reload unless resume is enabled. OBS also has source visibility and unloading or refresh behavior that can affect when a browser page is loaded again.

  • If the countdown must continue toward the same end time through scene changes, check the timer’s resume or target-time options and OBS’s source behavior.
  • If restarting the countdown is acceptable, a duration timer that begins again on reload may be simpler.
  • Do not assume a timer keeps running in the background just because it appeared to work in one preview. Verify its behavior after hiding and showing the source and after changing scenes.

Test before going live

  1. Start the timer in OBS and confirm it appears over the correct ambience scene.
  2. Switch to another scene and back. Check whether the countdown continues, resumes, or restarts as intended.
  3. Hide and show the source, then reload it if that control is available. Confirm the graphic and end time behave as expected.
  4. Preview the overlay against different footage and check that the text is legible at the stream’s actual size.
  5. If you plan to use a separate away slate during a break, test it before going live. YouTube’s Live Control Room Take a Break feature is separate from a custom timer overlay; YouTube says its break countdown does not automatically end the break at zero, so the creator must end it in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s live monetization and break guidance.

What YouTube’s Sleep Timer does

YouTube Help documents a Sleep Timer for viewers on Android: open the video, tap Settings, tap Sleep timer, and choose a duration. The viewer can adjust the timer and reset it after pausing. This pauses that viewer’s playback; it does not add a graphic to your broadcast or control other viewers’ players. Steps may differ on desktop or iOS. See YouTube Help: Set a sleep timer on Android.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your ambience channel is meant to stay live while your computer is off, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping to YouTube from the cloud. The setup is: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo does not go live from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.
