You can reduce copyright risk, but you cannot guarantee that a 24/7 nature-sounds livestream or its archive will never receive a match. Use recordings you made yourself or audio whose license clearly covers your planned live and archived uses. If you stream licensed third-party audio, ask the rights holder to add your YouTube channel to its Content ID allowlist before going live. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches and may interrupt them; it can also claim an archived stream after it ends. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance explains both stages.
What to check before you stream
Think of copyright clearance and YouTube’s matching systems as two separate issues. You need permission or another valid basis to use the recording, and you may also need the rights holder to configure Content ID so your channel’s licensed use does not interrupt the live broadcast. Neither a license by itself nor an absence of a past claim guarantees that a future stream will be uninterrupted.
- Identify the recording. Establish who made and owns the specific sound recording, not just who uploaded it.
- Clear each intended use. Check whether the rights cover livestreaming, archiving the broadcast, monetization, the territories where it will be available, the planned duration, and edits or looping.
- Check Content ID handling. Ask whether the recording is enrolled in Content ID, who administers it, and whether your channel can be allowlisted.
- Keep evidence. Save the license or permission, receipt if applicable, recording title, owner or creator, source URL or catalog record, date obtained, and the relevant terms.
The license itself determines what uses are permitted. YouTube advises creators to check license terms because they specify where and how audio may be used. Its guidance also notes that audio labeled “free” may still be flagged, and that Content ID cannot know whether you bought rights elsewhere. YouTube’s music and sound-effects guidance recommends checking the actual rights rather than relying on a description or label.
Choose a source you can clear
Record the nature sounds yourself
Your own field recording can avoid relying on another creator’s sound recording, provided it is genuinely your recording and does not include other protected material. For example, a portable audio recorder can capture rain, wind, birds, or running water; the device is simply a way to make a recording, not a legal safeguard. Check the resulting audio for music, voices, or other material you did not create or clear.

Get permission or a license for someone else’s recording
Before using a library track or another creator’s recording, confirm that the permission covers the exact channel and uses. Ask specifically about live transmission, an available archive, monetization, territories, duration, and permission to edit or loop the recording. If a provider’s license does not clearly answer a point, ask the rights holder or provider rather than assuming it is included.
Use YouTube audio sources only within their scope
YouTube recommends its Audio Library as a source of copyright-safe music and sound effects. Check the terms of each asset and whether it is suitable for your particular format; that recommendation does not establish that every nature recording you might want is available or cleared for every use. Creator Music is not a workaround for a live nature stream: its FAQ says Creator Music licensing currently does not support live content. Read YouTube’s Creator Music FAQ before relying on that program.

Ask the rights holder about Content ID before going live
If you have licensed third-party audio, contact the owner or licensing provider well before the broadcast. YouTube says creators using licensed third-party content in a livestream should ask the owner to add their channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license may give you permission while the matching system still interrupts the stream if your channel has not been allowlisted. A territory restriction does not fix that allowlisting issue. YouTube’s instructions for live-stream matches describe the recommended step.
Ask the provider whether the exact recording is registered with Content ID, who administers it, whether allowlisting is available, and what channel information or identifiers are needed. Keep the response with your license records. Do not interpret a track’s “royalty-free” or “free” label, or a previous stream without a claim, as proof that the recording is cleared for your planned broadcast.

Clear the live broadcast and the archive separately
While the stream is live
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, it may show a warning or placeholder image, temporarily interrupt the broadcast, or terminate it if the material remains. For licensed audio, arrange any required allowlisting in advance. If a warning appears, stop or replace the identified material and check YouTube Studio for the restriction or strike information. See YouTube’s live-stream matching and interruption guidance.
After the stream ends
If you choose to archive the live stream, YouTube says it can make Content ID claims on the archive after the broadcast is complete. The archive therefore needs its own rights clearance; resolving the live-stream issue does not automatically settle what can happen to the saved video. Depending on the rights holder’s settings, a claim may block the video, monetize it, or track its viewing. YouTube explains Content ID claims and their effects.

What to do if a warning or claim appears
If YouTube interrupts the live stream
- Stop or replace the identified third-party audio rather than letting it continue.
- Open YouTube Studio and review the notice to see what restriction or strike, if any, is stated.
- Check your clearance records and contact the owner or administrator if you believe the match involves licensed audio. Confirm whether your channel was allowlisted for the specific recording.
If an archived video gets a Content ID claim
- In YouTube Studio, inspect the claim details to identify the claimant and the material or segment involved.
- Compare the claim with the actual license and your records. A Content ID claim is not itself a copyright strike; a copyright removal request is a different process.
- If you have a valid basis to challenge the claim, dispute it only when you are confident you have the necessary rights or another sound basis. YouTube does not decide ownership or mediate disputes. An unsupported dispute can be followed by a removal request, which may lead to a strike if the request is valid. YouTube’s copyright tips explain this distinction.
- If the claim is valid, available options may include leaving it in place, trimming the claimed segment, muting the audio, or replacing audio, depending on the claim and the tools available for that video.
Before editing a claimed archive in Studio Editor, preserve a copy of the original. Since June 2025, changes saved in the editor have not been revertible through “Revert to original.” Check YouTube’s current editing guidance before making a change.
