For an encoder-based YouTube Live promo loop, put the countdown and store hours in the video you send to YouTube. Schedule the Live in YouTube Studio, connect your encoder with the stream URL and key, check the preview, and then go live. YouTube’s native countdown theme is for Premieres, not a scheduled encoder-based Live.
Put the countdown and hours in the promo-loop video
Create or edit the video that will serve as your encoder’s feed. Add the event start time and a clear countdown treatment, then display accurate store hours in readable text for long enough that viewers can take them in. If the information needs to appear throughout the Live, include it in the loop content so it returns as the video repeats.
YouTube’s encoder instructions cover sending a video feed; they do not prescribe a design or editing app. Use the editor or graphics workflow you prefer, and verify the finished video before scheduling.
Schedule and start the encoder-based Live
- Schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go live, and open Manage. Schedule a stream, reusing settings or creating a new stream. YouTube’s encoder streaming guide describes this workflow.
- Connect your encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the encoder. The URL and key direct the encoder’s feed to YouTube and allow YouTube to accept it. Treat the key like a password: do not share it publicly.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room. Check the video and audio, then select Go live when the preview is ready. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring stream quality in its live-streaming troubleshooting guidance.
- Promote the scheduled event. YouTube recommends sharing the stream link at least 48 hours before going live; it also suggests a teaser or trailer and embedding the link on a website. See YouTube’s guidance on promoting your live stream. A scheduled Live may appear as upcoming, where viewers can select Notify me.
Check the actual loop before going live
Use the Live Control Room preview to check the feed viewers will receive, not just the source file in your editor. YouTube recommends checking the preview; the following content checks are practical checks for a promo loop:

- Confirm the countdown is legible and reflects the correct event start time.
- Check that the store hours are accurate, readable, and on screen long enough to understand.
- Watch a loop transition to ensure it repeats cleanly and does not briefly show an unintended frame or blank screen.
- Listen to the audio and confirm it is appropriate for the Live.
Know which YouTube countdown you mean
| Feature | Where it appears | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Promo-loop countdown | In the encoder feed during the Live | Add the countdown and hours to the video content; repetition depends on how playback is configured. |
| Scheduled-stream trailer | On the watch page before a scheduled Live starts | An optional uploaded channel video that teases the upcoming stream. YouTube states that eligible channels must have more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes; the trailer must be 15 seconds to 3 minutes long. These are trailer conditions, not requirements for the encoder loop. See YouTube’s trailer instructions. |
| Premiere countdown | Before a scheduled video Premiere | YouTube lets creators choose a countdown theme and length for a Premiere. It is not the countdown control for an encoder-based Live promo loop. See YouTube’s Premiere setup guidance. |
Common problems to check
- The countdown does not appear in the Live: the Premiere countdown is a separate feature. Put the treatment in the video sent by your encoder.
- The stream does not show a preview: check that the encoder is using the stream URL and key for the scheduled event, and that the encoder is sending its feed.
- The hours or countdown are hard to read: revise the source video and check the result in Live Control Room before selecting Go live.
- The information becomes stale during a long stream: update the source loop with the correct event time and hours, then verify its repeated playback before sending it.
