How to Show the Currently Playing Episode on an Always-On YouTube Podcast Stream

Use an OBS text or browser source to show the episode currently playing in your continuous YouTube stream, while keeping its public broadcast title stable.

To show the current episode on a continuous YouTube podcast stream, put a “Now playing” label inside the video using an OBS text source connected to a file your playlist or automation updates. That keeps the public YouTube title stable while the on-screen label changes. If you want the episode name to appear in YouTube’s title or description instead, edit the broadcast metadata in YouTube Studio or use the Live Streaming API; that changes the listing, not the picture.

Choose where the episode name should appear

There are two different things you can update: the words rendered inside the video frame, and the YouTube video’s public title or description. An on-screen overlay is usually the clearest choice for one continuous broadcast: viewers can see what is playing without making the stream’s listing appear to change identity. YouTube’s title and description are broadcast metadata; updating them does not add text to the video image.

Method Where viewers see the episode How it changes
OBS text-file source Inside the video image A person or automation updates a local text file; OBS reads it as a text source. OBS documents text sources.
OBS browser source Inside the video image, with a page-based layout OBS displays a local or hosted web page that can render formatted or remote-fed content. OBS documents browser sources.
YouTube Studio or Live Streaming API YouTube’s title or description, outside the video image Edit the broadcast’s metadata in Studio or update the video metadata through the API. YouTube’s API supports metadata updates.

A YouTube broadcast is the viewer-facing event, while its associated live stream resource provides transmission settings. A broadcast can be bound to a stream, and stream resources can be reused; this does not make the on-screen overlay and public metadata the same control. See YouTube’s Live Streaming API lifecycle guide.

Set up a “Now playing” overlay in OBS

1. Create or schedule the YouTube broadcast

In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the continuous broadcast and configure its stream settings. You can choose metadata when creating or scheduling, or edit it from the stream settings. Reusing stream settings copies metadata, settings, and the stream key to the new stream; review and edit the new broadcast as needed. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Add a text source that reads a file

In OBS, open the scene used for the live video. In the Sources panel, add a text source and enable the option to read from a file, then select a plain-text file for the episode label. Name the source clearly, such as “Now playing.” Add it above the background or artwork in the source stack so it renders visibly over them. Position and size it in the preview, and check that the full title remains readable within the frame. OBS’s sources guide covers adding, stacking, positioning, and sizing sources; labels and controls may differ by installed OBS version.

3. Update the file when the episode changes

For a manual workflow, replace the text in the selected file with the new episode title when playback advances. For an automated workflow, configure the playlist controller, media automation, or a small local script to write the current episode name to that same file. The OBS text-file source provides the display mechanism; the connection to a particular playlist or automation system is something you must configure separately.

Use a short, legible label rather than a full episode description. Test a title change while the stream is running and confirm OBS displays the new text. Then test the cases that may change playback unexpectedly, such as a playlist skip or a reconnect, and make sure the file reflects the episode that is actually audible.

4. Use a browser source for a richer display

If the label needs artwork, formatting, links, or a remote metadata feed, build an overlay page and add it as an OBS browser source. Point it to a local file or URL and set the source’s viewport dimensions to fit the scene. OBS’s browser-source guide describes the configuration and notes availability on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The page and its data feed are separate components you must create or host.

5. Check refresh behavior and viewer timing

Do not assume that a file or page update will appear at the same instant the audio changes for every viewer. YouTube defines latency as the time between capture and playback; lower latency can mean more buffering. OBS also lets you set a custom frame rate for a browser source, but neither setting guarantees synchronization between an episode transition and its label. Test the actual playlist, overlay, and stream together, including skips and reconnects. See YouTube’s latency guidance.

If the episode should appear in YouTube’s title

Use YouTube Studio to edit the broadcast’s title or description, or update the associated video metadata with the Live Streaming API. YouTube says these metadata fields can be updated at any time through the API; the update changes the public listing, not text in the video image. See the videos update endpoint.

Choose this approach if the listing itself should follow the episode. For a single continuous public video, make clear in the title or description what it represents, since viewers may encounter it between episode changes. A stable stream title plus a “Now playing” overlay keeps the broadcast identity distinct from the current episode.

Keep the stream discoverable and compliant

  • Use episode titles and descriptions that accurately describe the broadcast. YouTube says tags have a minimal role in discovery except when content is commonly misspelled; they are not a substitute for a clear title. See Manage live stream settings.
  • If you schedule the stream, YouTube may show it as upcoming and allow viewers to select “Notify me.”
  • Only stream audio, video, artwork, and other material you have permission to use. A looping or continuous format does not grant rights to copyrighted music, clips, or images.
  • Do not describe reused episodes as new live performances. Make the format clear to viewers and follow YouTube’s applicable live-stream and monetization policies.

Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect episode label

  • The label does not appear: Confirm the text source is visible, placed above the background in the Sources stack, and configured to read the intended file. Check the file path and that the source fits inside the scene.
  • The label shows an older episode: Verify that the playlist automation writes to the exact file OBS reads, then check whether a skip or reconnect changed playback without updating the file.
  • The title changes on YouTube but not in the picture: You changed broadcast metadata. Add an OBS text or browser source for an in-video label.
  • The overlay changes but the YouTube listing does not: The overlay is separate from broadcast metadata. Edit the title or description in Studio or update the video through the API if the listing should change too.
  • Viewers report a delayed label: Compare what OBS renders with what viewers receive and account for stream latency. Test before promising an exact synchronization interval; the documented controls do not guarantee one.
  • A browser overlay is blank or clipped: Check its local-file or URL setting, viewport size, and the page’s own content. Confirm it renders correctly in the OBS preview before relying on it live.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your show uses uploaded, prerecorded episodes and you want the YouTube stream to keep running without OBS or a computer at home, StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. You will still need a way to manage the episode label if you want it to update in the video; StreamNeo’s listed service keeps the YouTube stream running, while the OBS overlay method above handles the on-screen label.
