To add a countdown, schedule an eligible video as a Premiere in YouTube Studio, select Set up Premiere, then choose a countdown theme and length from the menus. The countdown is part of the Premiere event—not part of the uploaded video.
Set up the countdown in YouTube Studio

Sign in to YouTube Studio and upload the video you want to premiere.

At the Visibility step, schedule the upload as a public video. Choose a date and time for a future event, or use the supported instant-Premiere flow.

Select Set as Premiere, then choose Set up Premiere.

In the setup dialog, choose a countdown theme and length from the available menus. YouTube Help confirms both settings are configurable, but does not enumerate every current theme or duration; use the choices shown in your dialog.

Finish by selecting Done or Schedule, depending on the interface flow.

What viewers see—and when
YouTube says viewers see a live countdown two minutes before the Premiere starts; the selected theme then runs for the duration chosen in setup. When it ends, the Premiere video plays for viewers together in real time. The countdown is not added to the video itself, so it will not appear in the recording after the event.

The Premiere also creates a public watch page you can share in advance. Viewers can set a reminder on that page; YouTube says reminder notifications arrive about 30 minutes before the event and when it starts.

Countdown: the built-in visual lead-in to the scheduled event, configured while setting up the Premiere.

Trailer: a separate video shown on the Premiere watch page before the event. YouTube’s customization instructions say this is available to creators with more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. The trailer must be 15 seconds to 3 minutes long, use supported video, comply with rights and Community Guidelines requirements, and not have already premiered. YouTube recommends matching its aspect ratio and resolution to the Premiere video. Details are in the customization guide.

Reminder: a viewer-controlled notification, not a countdown setting. Share the watch page so viewers can choose to set one.

Make the event easier to find
YouTube recommends scheduling at least 24 hours ahead so people around the world have an opportunity to see the thumbnail in their subscriptions feed. Share the Premiere watch page in the places your audience follows you; viewers can visit it, set a reminder, and return for the event. See YouTube’s Premiere tips.

Eligibility and limits

Shorts are not supported for Premieres. YouTube also lists 360/VR180 videos and output above 1080p as unsupported for Premieres.

If the account has a Community Guidelines strike, YouTube says it cannot publish a Premiere during the penalty period. The Premiere is set to private until the creator can reschedule it after the freeze period.

The current countdown theme names and exact duration choices are not listed in YouTube’s cited help guidance. The setup dialog is the authoritative place to see which options are available to your upload.

If “Set up Premiere” is missing

Check the video format and resolution. Confirm the upload is not a Short or a 360/VR180 video, and that its output is no higher than 1080p.

Check the visibility flow. Set the upload as a public video and select Set as Premiere; the countdown controls are reached through Set up Premiere.

Check account restrictions. An active Community Guidelines penalty can prevent publishing a Premiere. YouTube says affected Premieres are private until the freeze period ends and the creator can reschedule.

Use the available menu choices. YouTube’s help page does not publish a complete list of themes or countdown lengths, so an option not shown in your dialog should not be assumed to be available.
