Add the card to the Microsoft account you use on Xbox—not to the console itself. The quickest route is Microsoft’s Payment options page: sign in, choose Add a new payment method, enter the card and billing details, then save. The card can be available for Xbox purchases afterward, but an existing subscription may need its payment method changed separately.
Add a card online
Microsoft’s account dashboard is the most direct general method, and you can save a card without starting a purchase.

- Go to account.microsoft.com/billing/payments.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account used on your Xbox.
- Select Add a new payment method.
- Choose the card option and enter the card number, expiration date, security code, name, and billing address.
- Save the payment method. It should then be available at a Microsoft Store or Xbox checkout.
Have your Microsoft account sign-in details and the card’s billing information ready. Use the address and postal or ZIP code held by your card issuer. Microsoft’s supported payment methods vary by country or region, and the bank may require an additional verification step. See Microsoft’s instructions for adding a payment method.

Use the card for Game Pass or another subscription
Saving a card does not itself buy anything or assign the card to every existing subscription. To change the payment method for a subscription with recurring billing:

- Go to account.microsoft.com/services and sign in to the account that owns the subscription.
- Find the subscription and select Manage.
- Select Change how you pay.
- Choose the saved card, or select Add a new way to pay and follow the prompts.
If recurring billing is off, Microsoft says Change how you pay may not appear because the subscription is already paid through its expiration date. If the subscription is past due, you may instead need to select Pay now. For the full subscription guidance, see Microsoft’s instructions for changing subscription payment options.
For a child’s subscription, sign in with the child’s account that owns it. A parent account may be involved in family purchase approvals, but the subscription’s payment settings belong to its owner’s account.

If the card will not add
- Check every entry. Re-enter the card number, expiration date, security code, name, and billing address. Make sure the address matches the card issuer’s records.
- Try the postal code format. If the form rejects it, Microsoft suggests entering it with and without spaces.
- Check with the issuer. Confirm the card is valid for online or international transactions if the bank requires those settings. Ask whether a fraud block or identity-verification request is stopping authorization.
- Check account and region. Use the Microsoft account associated with the Xbox purchase and a payment method supported for that account’s country or region. Do not use a false address to bypass a regional restriction.
- Switch route. If you tried on the console, try the Payment options page in a browser, or vice versa.
- Resolve account-level payment issues. If the details are correct but the account still rejects the card, try again later or contact Microsoft Support. Microsoft’s payment-option troubleshooting page covers declined options and related issues.
If the card does not appear at checkout
- Confirm the browser and Xbox are signed in to the same Microsoft account, and that the card appears on its Payment options page.
- Check that the card has not expired or been removed, and that the purchase region matches the account region.
- If the purchase is a subscription renewal, change its payment assignment under Services & subscriptions; merely saving a card does not necessarily change the subscription’s selected method.
- Check for an overdue balance, which can interfere with payment changes. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance explains payment-option problems.
Edit or remove a saved card
Edit the card
- Open Payment options and sign in.
- Find the card and select View or edit card.
- Update the details and select Save.
On the documented Xbox One path, open System > Settings > Account > Payment & billing, select the payment method, choose Edit info, and save the changes.
Remove the card
- On the Payment options page, find the card and select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
A payment method may not be removable while it is needed for a subscription or outstanding balance. Microsoft specifically notes that a past-due subscription balance can prevent removal until it is paid. See Microsoft’s removal instructions.

- To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Payment alternatives and regional limits
- Debit card: Microsoft supports credit and debit or bank cards where available; not every method is offered in every country or region.
- PayPal: Availability depends on region. Microsoft says a PayPal account used with Microsoft must have a credit card or confirmed bank account as a funding source.
- Gift-card credit: Redeeming an Xbox or Microsoft gift card adds account credit for eligible purchases. Microsoft says gift-card funds cannot be used for Microsoft 365 subscriptions; gift cards and balances are region-sensitive.
- Mobile-operator billing: Available only in certain countries through participating operators, not as a generally available U.S. option.
If you have moved countries for the long term, Microsoft recommends changing the account country or region only in that situation. Purchases and subscriptions can be region-specific, and account funds do not transfer between regions. Do not switch regions just to bypass a card restriction. See Microsoft’s country and region guidance and its page on adding money to a Microsoft account.
Keep payment details secure
Enter card details only on official Microsoft account pages or the Xbox interface, and check the browser address before signing in. Avoid payment links in unsolicited messages. Microsoft advises users troubleshooting payment issues to go directly to their bank’s website rather than follow suspicious email links; see its payment troubleshooting guidance.
