The official project ended on March 4, 2024, after its developers settled Nintendo’s lawsuit. Yuzu is no longer an active, officially supported download, and the settlement did not establish that all emulators are illegal.
What is an emulator, and what did Yuzu do?
An emulator imitates the behavior of one computing platform on another. Yuzu aimed to reproduce enough of the Nintendo Switch’s processor, graphics, memory, input, and system services for Switch software to run on computers and, in later versions, Android devices. The project described itself as an experimental, open-source Switch emulator written primarily in C++. Its historical repository listed Windows, Linux, and macOS builds. The Yuzu repository documents the project.
Emulation is not the same as streaming, where a game runs on another machine and video is sent to you; porting or remastering, where software is rebuilt or changed for another platform; or virtualization, which runs software in a controlled environment on the same or a closely related architecture. A ROM or game dump is the game data itself, not an emulator.
How did Yuzu emulate the Switch?
Yuzu attempted to translate or reproduce several layers of Switch behavior: ARM-based CPU operations, graphics commands, memory management, controller input, system services, and workflows for loading games. Its graphics handling involved APIs, shader compilation, and caches. Emulation is an approximation, not a perfect copy of a console, so results depended on the game, Yuzu build, operating system, processor, graphics hardware, drivers, and settings.

There was no single reliable hardware requirement for every game. A modern multi-core CPU and capable GPU could matter substantially for demanding titles; integrated graphics might work for some software but were not a universal solution. Graphics backends such as Vulkan and OpenGL could behave differently depending on the platform and driver. RAM, storage, shader compilation, and device thermals also affected practical performance. Android results varied particularly with chipset, GPU driver, and operating-system version. Broad claims that Yuzu ran every Switch game or worked on any PC leave out the factors that determine compatibility.
Who developed Yuzu, and why did it matter?
Yuzu was made by developers associated with Citra, the Nintendo 3DS emulator. That technical heritage also explains why the Yuzu shutdown affected Citra: in its closure announcement, the team said it was discontinuing both Yuzu and its support for Citra. Neither project was created or endorsed by Nintendo. The developers’ announcement set out the shutdown.
Yuzu made Switch emulation accessible to a broad audience and supported homebrew development and experimentation. Its history also illustrates the tension between preservation and research on one hand, and the use of emulators to access unauthorized commercial games on the other. Its shutdown became a prominent example of the legal and practical risks surrounding emulators that interact with encrypted commercial software.
What could Yuzu be used for?
Potential uses included running independently created Switch homebrew, testing homebrew during development, research and debugging, accessibility-related control or display configurations, preservation work, and playing software where the user’s methods and materials complied with applicable law. The legality of a particular use depends on the jurisdiction and the specific software and data involved; calling an activity “backup” or “preservation” does not settle that question.

Controversial uses included playing unauthorized copies of commercial games, using unauthorized keys or system files, accessing pre-release leaks, and distributing game files, firmware, keys, or bundles containing copyrighted material. Nintendo’s complaint alleged that Yuzu’s operation depended on bypassing Switch protections and enabled unauthorized access to encrypted game content. Those claims were Nintendo’s legal allegations; the case ended in a settlement rather than a full trial deciding every disputed question. Nintendo’s complaint describes its position.
Why did Yuzu shut down?
Nintendo of America sued Tropic Haze LLC, the entity associated with Yuzu, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island. The key dates were:
- February 26, 2024: Nintendo filed its lawsuit.
- March 4, 2024: The parties announced a settlement, and Yuzu’s developers said the project was being discontinued immediately.
- March 6, 2024: The court entered a final judgment and permanent injunction.
The agreement required a $2.4 million payment and permanently barred the defendants from offering, distributing, marketing, hosting, cloning, or otherwise trafficking in Yuzu and covered source code or features. The injunction applies to the defendants and the conduct it covers. The final judgment and injunction contain the terms. In the shutdown announcement, the developers said they believed their software had enabled extensive piracy, including pre-release leaks, despite their opposition to piracy.
Was Yuzu illegal? Does the settlement make all emulators illegal?
The case did not produce a full-trial ruling that emulation itself, all emulators, or every use of an emulator is unlawful. Nintendo alleged that Yuzu’s design and associated practices violated copyright and the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act’s anti-circumvention provisions. The defendants agreed to a settlement and injunction that ended official Yuzu development and distribution; that outcome is not a universal ruling on other projects or uses.

Several separate issues can matter: the emulator’s design and distribution, whether someone circumvents encryption or other technological protections, how game copies and system files were obtained, whether copyrighted material is distributed, and the law in the user’s jurisdiction. Owning a game does not automatically resolve every question about copying, keys, firmware, or circumvention. If the answer has real legal consequences, consult a qualified lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction rather than treating a general emulator guide as legal advice.
Nintendo has also submitted DMCA notices to GitHub concerning Switch-emulator repositories. A notice records Nintendo’s enforcement position and allegations; it is not an independent court determination about every repository named or every emulator. Nintendo’s November 2024 notice and its February 2026 notice illustrate that distinction.
Can you download Yuzu today?
The official Yuzu project is discontinued. Its former GitHub organization is archived, and its website repository was last updated on March 4, 2024. The organization page shows its current archival status. The official shutdown announcement said the project’s repositories, Patreon, Discord servers, and websites would be taken offline.
Old builds, mirrors, forks, modified Android packages, and pages using the Yuzu name may still appear online. Their presence does not establish that they are official, safe, current, or authorized. Search-result ranking, a familiar logo, or a GitHub repository alone is not proof of authenticity. Be especially cautious of installers or bundles promising games, firmware, keys, “preloaded” content, or one-click setup: they may distribute copyrighted material and can expose users to malware, credential theft, miners, adware, or altered binaries. This article does not direct readers to Yuzu binaries, game files, firmware, or encryption keys.

Old setup guides may refer to vanished servers, obsolete menus, outdated drivers, or unavailable downloads. Because the final official build cannot receive fixes for newer software, hardware, drivers, or operating systems, historical instructions should not be mistaken for current support.

A fork is a separate project that uses or adapts another project’s code. Yuzu’s open-source code made forks technically possible, but a fork has its own developers, changes, distribution channels, and legal exposure; it is not automatically an official continuation or an endorsement by Yuzu’s former developers.
For example, Eden describes itself as a Switch emulator derived from Yuzu and Sudachi. That description establishes lineage, not a guarantee of safety, quality, legality, or lasting availability. Nintendo’s later GitHub notices have listed multiple Yuzu-related and other Switch-emulator repositories. The notices show ongoing enforcement activity, not final legal judgments against every project named: see the March 2026 notice and June 2026 notice.
Before trusting a fork, check who controls its repository and download channels, what its documentation says, whether it publishes verifiable release information, and whether its downloads are still available through channels the project itself identifies. None of those checks alone establishes legal authorization.

What files were involved, and what should users avoid?
Switch emulation can involve several distinct kinds of data: the emulator program, game software, system firmware or other system data, cryptographic keys, and applicable game updates or downloadable content. Yuzu itself was the emulator, not a source of Nintendo games. How such materials can lawfully be obtained or used depends on local law and the circumstances.
- Do not obtain game copies, firmware, or keys from unauthorized sources.
- Avoid bundles that claim to include games, “preloaded keys,” complete firmware, or leaked releases.
- Do not assume that a personal copy, a fork’s open-source ancestry, or an online guide makes every related act lawful.
What can you use instead?
If the goal is simply to play Switch games, Nintendo hardware is the clearest route for official updates, online services, accessories, and support. Other projects may describe themselves as Yuzu-derived, but they are separate and their availability, security, and legal circumstances can change. No fork should be treated as a stable replacement without checking its current project channels and circumstances.
For learning about emulation on other systems, projects such as Dolphin (GameCube and Wii), PCSX2 (PlayStation 2), PPSSPP (PSP), and RetroArch cores cover different platforms. They are not substitutes for Yuzu’s Switch compatibility.
