Investigate the clues in Apollonia before visiting Konrad, complete the optional A Sinful Soul task if you want the fullest story, and save before entering Konrad’s hut. After the knights’ confrontation, take Ambrose’s broken sword from the grave north of the hut, forge it with one Frankfurt steel and two scrap metal, and return the finished weapon to Radovan.
How to start The Hermit
The quest belongs to the Trosky blacksmith route. Speak with Radovan in Tachov after the relevant route prerequisites—normally The Blacksmith’s Son followed by The Jaunt. A playthrough that used the Miller route can present the preceding sequence differently, but Radovan remains the quest contact. The listed base reward is 45 Groschen, a guide-reported in-game value.

After Radovan sends you after information, return to Troskowitz and exhaust Innkeeper Betty’s dialogue about the hermit. Betty’s information opens the investigation and points you toward Apollonia.
Investigate Apollonia before going to the hut
You can reach the sword without completing every investigation step, but the evidence route unlocks Konrad’s fuller explanation and helps prevent the optional A Sinful Soul objective from being missed.
#1 Best Overall
- Question the villagers. Talk to the available residents in the search area and exhaust their relevant dialogue.
- Speak with Gerda. Her account adds context to the dispute surrounding the hermit.
- Inspect the conciliatory cross and read the documents. Examine the cross and interact with the nearby papers rather than moving on after the first clue.
- Question Shepherd Stanislav. Ask about what he knows and follow every conversation option tied to the hermit.
- Inspect the black horse in Apollonia. This final piece of evidence completes the optional trail and gives you the strongest basis for the later conversation.
Do not treat the hut and the grave as the same location. They are separate places in Apollonia.
Find Konrad’s hut
Konrad’s hut is on the western side of the Apollonia search area. Look for a narrow gap between large boulders; the path through that gap leads to the hut.
- Save before entering. The next conversations can turn into combat, and the outcome affects which character survives.
- If Konrad is immediately hostile, leave. Return when he is calm so that the dialogue route remains available. Attacking during the hostile state can remove the opportunity to hear his explanation.
Complete A Sinful Soul for the fuller outcome
The optional A Sinful Soul task is tied to the evidence route and Konrad’s story. It sends Henry to deliver a forgiveness message to a widow and resolve the related grave or remains objective. Complete it before forcing the main confrontation if you want the connected narrative context. KCD2.org lists a 45 Groschen reward for this side task.

Choose whether to save Konrad or side with the knights
When you return to Apollonia, Brother Arn and the other knights ask Henry to help draw Konrad out. Your decision determines the confrontation.
| Choice | Konrad | Information and quests | Reward and loot | Sword-clue risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Save Konrad | Konrad survives. | You retain his fuller explanation and the context connected to A Sinful Soul. | The guides report 85 Groschen; the defeated knights can be looted. | Safest route because Konrad remains available to explain the location. |
| Side with the knights | Konrad is killed. | His explanation can be lost, especially if you attack before learning the sword’s location. | The guides also report 85 Groschen; Konrad’s body can be looted. | Learn the grave location first, because the clue may die with Konrad. |
For a first or completionist playthrough, investigate first and save Konrad. That preserves the most dialogue and the most reliable route to the sword clue. If you prefer the knights’ side, finish the conversation and record the location before combat.
Where to find Ambrose’s grave and broken sword
Once you know the location, travel north from Konrad’s hut toward the meadow and forest edge. Search beneath the distinctive trees for Ambrose’s grave. The broken sword is visibly sticking out of the grave marker.
Rank #3
- Experience the events with the eyes of Heinrich, a young man who moves to avenge the murder of his parents
- The authentic rendition of the 15th-century bohemiah gives you the opportunity to experience this fascinating environment like never before
- Customize Heinrich's appearance, skills and equipment to your liking
- The Gold Edition includes the game, the "Expansion Pass" DLC, bonus quest "Lion Crests" DLC and the DLC "Equipment of the Brave Hunter"
Take the sword directly. You do not need to dig up the body. If the sword does not appear, confirm that the confrontation and location dialogue have advanced, then search the trees north of the hut rather than the hut itself.

Return to Radovan in Tachov with Ambrose’s broken sword. The guide-reported recipe requires:
- Ambrose’s broken sword
- 1 Frankfurt steel
- 2 scrap metal
- Use the anvil and place the broken sword, one Frankfurt steel, and two scrap metal in the smithing ingredients.
- Heat the blade evenly.
- Hammer both sides with evenly spaced strikes.
- Reheat whenever the blade cools too far while you work.
- Quench the completed blade, then return it to Radovan.
Handing over the forged sword completes The Hermit and supports progression toward the Semine wedding route.
Common problems and fixes
Betty has no useful dialogue
Return to Radovan and finish every available conversation first. The quest normally follows the blacksmith-route prerequisites, and Betty’s dialogue is the step that directs the investigation.
Konrad attacks as soon as you arrive
Leave the area instead of killing him immediately. Come back when he is calm and use the dialogue route. Entering after completing the evidence steps also gives you more conversation options.
I cannot find the grave
Do not search inside the hut or start digging. From the hut, travel north toward the meadow/forest edge and inspect the grave beneath the distinctive trees; the broken sword protrudes from the marker.
The sword clue disappeared after the battle
This usually happens when the knights’ branch is chosen before Konrad reveals the location. Reload a save from before the confrontation if possible. Otherwise, search north of the hut using the grave description and the trees as landmarks.
The quest will not complete after forging
Check that you used the broken sword recovered from Ambrose’s grave, not a different weapon, and that the recipe included one Frankfurt steel and two scrap metal. Then speak with Radovan again to deliver the finished sword.
