You can add a separately sold Sony Disc Drive to compatible PS5 Digital Edition consoles—but check the model number before you buy. Sony lists the drive for PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim models and PS5 Pro. The older CFI-1000 Digital Edition does not support disc-based games or media.
The process has two parts: attach the drive to a supported console, then connect the console to the internet for the initial pairing. The first decision is compatibility, not installation. If your model is not supported, the fact that it is a PS5 Digital Edition does not mean the accessory will fit or work.

Check your PS5 model before buying
The detachable accessory is Sony’s PS5 Disc Drive, model series CFI-ZDD1. It is sold separately; not every PS5 Digital Edition can use it. Check the model number printed on your console and confirm it against Sony’s current product listing for your region before purchasing. Retail listings and compatibility information can change.
Use the console’s model number as the starting point rather than its appearance, the word “Digital” in its name, or a retailer’s broad description. Sony’s product page identifies specific compatible families. Sony’s CFI-2100 product page also says that CFI-2100 consoles use accessories for CFI-2000 products, including disc drives. That is the relevant detail for a CFI-2100 slim model; it is not a reason to assume all earlier Digital Edition consoles accept the same accessory.

| PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2100 slim | Listed as compatible on Sony’s Disc Drive product page. Sony’s CFI-2100 product page also says these models use accessories for CFI-2000 products, including disc drives. |

| PS5 Digital Edition CFI-1000 | Does not support disc-based games or media. |
Sony’s setup guide groups its instructions under CFI-2000/7000, while its product listing names CFI-2000, CFI-2100 and PS5 Pro. Use the product listing and the model number on your own console to verify compatibility; do not assume that a console is supported simply because it is a Digital Edition. Sony’s support instructions and product information were checked on October 9, 2026.
If you are uncertain which model you own, locate the model number printed on the console and compare the complete model group with Sony’s current local product information. Do this before ordering: the key distinction is not simply whether the console currently has a disc drive, but whether its model family is one Sony lists for this detachable accessory. The CFI-1000 Digital Edition is a clear exception, while the CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim Digital Editions and PS5 Pro are identified as compatible in Sony’s product information.
What to compare before placing an order
- Console model: Match the printed number to the compatible groups, rather than relying on a generic “PS5 Digital Edition” label.
- Accessory identity: Look for Sony’s PS5 Disc Drive, model series CFI-ZDD1. It is a separately sold first-party accessory.
- Regional listing: Check Sony’s current product listing for your region. Availability and listings can change, so verify at the time you buy.
- Reason to add discs: Consider whether you want to use supported physical games, including eligible PS4 titles, or supported movie discs. If you use only digital purchases and do not need disc playback, the drive may not serve a current need.
The cited Sony information establishes compatibility for the first-party detachable drive; it does not establish that an unrelated third-party optical drive works with these consoles. Do not treat a generic USB disc drive or a drive advertised for another device as equivalent. No competing compatible model is identified in Sony’s material described here, so the practical comparison is between your exact console model, Sony’s accessory listing, and whether access to supported discs is worth the separate purchase.
Sony identifies the drive as sold separately but the cited product information does not establish a current price. Check the current regional listing for price and availability rather than relying on an older retailer listing. Compatibility comes first: a low price or a listing that says “for PS5” does not resolve whether your exact Digital Edition model supports the add-on.
What the disc drive lets you play
With a compatible console, the drive adds access to supported PS5 game discs, supported PS4 titles, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray movies, Blu-ray discs and DVDs. Compatibility depends on the game or disc format: having a drive does not make every optical disc readable. Sony also says that discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. In a statement included with Sony’s product information, Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Content Communications at Sony Interactive Entertainment, said physical game disc production for new PlayStation games will be discontinued starting January 2028 as consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry shift away from physical discs.

The add-on changes the console’s ability to read supported physical media; it does not change the compatibility rules for individual games or disc formats. A supported PS4 title is not the same thing as a guarantee that every PS4 game will work, and a supported disc category does not make every disc in that category readable. Check a particular game or media disc against the relevant compatibility information if you have a specific title in mind.
The January 2028 statement is useful context if you are deciding whether to buy the accessory for a physical-game collection. Sony’s product listing says discs for games released before that date can continue to be played on the console. That statement does not mean that every older disc is supported, nor does it change the model compatibility requirement. The console must still be a compatible model, and the game disc must still be supported.

| CDs | Not supported |
| BD-RE version 1.0 | Not supported |
| BD-R / BD-RE XL | Not supported |
| Unfinalized DVDs | Not supported |
These are the formats listed on Sony’s PS5 support page; game and movie compatibility can still vary by title and disc. The available information establishes that an internet connection is required for initial drive-console pairing. It does not establish a general ongoing internet requirement for disc playback.
Read the exclusions as carefully as the supported list. For example, BD-R and BD-RE appear among the listed formats, but BD-R/RE XL is specifically excluded. DVDs are listed in supported categories, but unfinalized DVDs are not supported. CDs are not supported, even though the drive can read certain other optical media. In other words, “it is a disc” or “it is a Blu-ray” is not enough to predict whether the console will recognize it.
Do you need an internet connection?
Sony specifies an internet connection for the initial pairing between the drive and console during setup. Plan to connect the console while completing the first setup after installation. That requirement is distinct from the physical fitting steps: attaching the clips and replacing the cover does not itself complete pairing.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The stated requirement is for initial pairing. Sony’s cited information does not establish that an internet connection is generally required every time you play a disc. Avoid turning the setup requirement into a broader claim about ongoing use. If pairing cannot complete, first check that the console is connected to the internet and that the drive is installed on a compatible model.

Install the PS5 Disc Drive
Follow Sony’s setup instructions. Do the physical installation with the console switched off, disconnected from power and other cables, and cooled. Keep the cover and short feet you remove: Sony says they are needed if you remove the drive later.
Prepare a flat surface and a soft cloth before handling the console. The console should be positioned bottom-up with its front facing you during the procedure. Keep the removed parts together after installation: the short horizontal feet and the circular cover are not disposable packing pieces. Sony’s instructions say they are needed if you later take the drive back off.
- Turn off the console. Use the PS5 Control Center to turn it off. Do not begin while it is in Rest Mode. Confirm that the console is shut down before you proceed to disconnect it.
- Disconnect and let it cool. Unplug the AC power cord and all other cables, then wait for the console to cool. Do not start the physical fitting while the console remains connected.
- Position the console. Place it bottom-up, with the front facing you, on a soft cloth over a flat surface. Remove the short horizontal feet. Keep them somewhere safe along with the original circular cover.
- Remove the circular cover. Release the cover’s clips and lift it off. Work from the clips as Sony’s guide shows; the point is to release the cover rather than force it off.
- Attach the drive. Line up the drive’s clips with the two marked holes, then press firmly until the clips click into place. Check alignment with the marked holes before pressing. If the clips do not line up or click, stop and recheck the model and positioning rather than forcing the accessory.
- Replace the cover and feet. Fit the circular cover and the long horizontal feet supplied with the drive. Set the removed cover and short feet aside for possible later removal of the drive.
- Reconnect and pair. Reconnect the power and other cables, then turn on the console. An internet connection is required during setup to pair the drive with the console.
The order matters: shut down first, disconnect and wait for cooling, then position the console and remove the cover. The drive attaches at the marked holes with its clips; it is not a cable-only accessory that can be left loose beside the console. Complete the cover and feet step with the parts supplied for the drive before reconnecting power.
Before powering on: a short checklist
- The console was turned off through the Control Center, not left in Rest Mode.
- The AC power cord and other cables were unplugged for installation, and the console was allowed to cool.
- The console was placed bottom-up, front facing you, on a soft cloth over a flat surface.
- The drive clips are aligned with the two marked holes and have clicked into place.
- The supplied circular cover and long horizontal feet are fitted.
- The original circular cover and short horizontal feet have been kept in case the drive is removed later.
- An internet connection is available for the initial pairing after the console is turned on.
This checklist restates the decision points in Sony’s procedure, not a substitute for its setup illustrations. If you cannot identify the marked holes, cannot align the clips, or are not sure the model is supported, pause and consult Sony’s official setup guide rather than improvising or applying extra force.

Common checks if setup does not go as expected
- The drive does not fit or its clips will not click: Stop rather than forcing it. Confirm the console model is supported, and check that the drive is aligned with the two marked holes as shown in Sony’s setup instructions. Compatibility should be resolved before repeating the fitting attempt.
- You are unsure whether the console is compatible: Recheck its printed model number against Sony’s current regional Disc Drive listing. The CFI-1000 Digital Edition is excluded. Sony’s setup guide and product listing use different group shorthand, so use the precise model details on the product information as well as the setup guide’s supported grouping.
- The drive is installed but setup cannot pair it: Connect the console to the internet for the initial pairing process. The cited setup information requires an internet connection at this stage.
- A disc is not recognized: Check whether its format is among Sony’s supported types. CDs, BD-RE version 1.0, BD-R/RE XL and unfinalized DVDs are listed as unsupported; supported formats do not guarantee compatibility with every individual game or disc.
- You removed the drive and no longer have the original pieces: Sony says to keep the removed cover and short horizontal feet because they are needed if the drive is taken off later. Store them together after installation to avoid losing the parts needed for that later configuration.
- You expect a cable connection to finish setup: The physical installation and the initial pairing are separate parts of the process. Reconnect the console, turn it on and provide an internet connection for pairing.
This procedure reflects Sony’s published support instructions; it is not a claim of hands-on testing. For current compatibility details and installation illustrations, consult Sony’s PS5 Disc Drive product information and official support setup guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my PS5 Digital Edition compatible with the Disc Drive?
Check the model number printed on the console before buying. Sony lists the PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim groups and PS5 Pro as compatible. The older CFI-1000 Digital Edition does not support disc-based games or media. Confirm your exact model against Sony’s current regional product listing.
Which disc drive should I buy for a PS5 Digital Edition?
The accessory covered here is Sony’s separately sold PS5 Disc Drive, model series CFI-ZDD1. Sony’s cited pages do not establish that third-party optical drives are compatible. Verify your console model and the current local Sony listing before ordering.
Can I install the drive while the PS5 is in Rest Mode?
No. Sony’s instructions say to turn the console off through the Control Center, unplug the AC power cord and other cables, and wait for it to cool before starting the physical installation.
Does the PS5 Disc Drive need internet?
An internet connection is required to pair the drive and console during initial setup. Sony’s cited information does not establish a general ongoing internet requirement for disc playback.

Can the drive play CDs or every Blu-ray and DVD?
No. Sony lists CDs, BD-RE version 1.0, BD-R/RE XL and unfinalized DVDs as unsupported. It lists Ultra HD Blu-ray, BD-ROM, BD-R/RE, DVD-ROM and DVD±R/RW among supported formats, with those stated exclusions. Compatibility can still vary by title and disc.
Will adding the drive let me play PS4 games?
Sony lists supported PS4 titles among the uses for the drive, but that does not mean every PS4 title is compatible. Check the compatibility of a particular game if you have a specific disc in mind.
Do I need to keep the cover and feet I remove?
Yes. Sony says to keep the original circular cover and short horizontal feet because they are needed if you remove the drive later. The drive installation uses the circular cover and long horizontal feet supplied with the accessory.
How much does the PS5 Disc Drive cost?
The accessory is sold separately, but the cited Sony information does not establish a current price. Check Sony’s current regional listing for price and availability.
The Bottom Line
First match the model number on your console to Sony’s current compatibility listing. The separately sold CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive is listed for CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim Digital Editions and PS5 Pro, not the CFI-1000 Digital Edition. If your model is supported, follow Sony’s shutdown, unplugging, cover-and-clip installation and replacement-parts steps, then connect to the internet for initial pairing. Check disc-format support before assuming a particular game or movie will play.
