Sony identifies the PS5 Pro as the CFI-7000 model group, and the detachable drive is intended for that console. Installation is a clip-in procedure: shut the console down, unplug and cool it, remove the circle cover and short feet, click the drive into place, fit the supplied cover and long feet, then reconnect the console and complete internet pairing.
Which disc drive works with PS5 Pro?
Use Sony’s detachable PS5 Disc Drive, sold separately and identified by Sony as compatible with PS5 Pro. The relevant console model group is CFI-7000. Sony’s installation guidance covers both the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 groups, but that does not make every older PS5 accessory interchangeable with a PS5 Pro.

When shopping, check that the listing is for the complete detachable disc drive and its installation cover and feet. Do not substitute a cover set, stand, or accessory made for an older PS5 model. Sony’s compatibility guidance specifically distinguishes the compatible disc drive with cover from older cover sets for the CFI-1000 and CFI-2000 slim groups, which are not compatible with PS5 Pro.

The word supported matters for PS4 media: Sony’s wording does not promise that every PS4 disc will work. Treat compatibility as a property of the individual game, not as a guarantee for the entire PS4 disc library.
Prepare the console and your workspace
Do the physical installation with the console powered down and disconnected. A soft cloth over a flat surface protects the console while it is positioned with its bottom facing up. Have the drive, its supplied cover, and its long feet nearby so you do not have to move the console while parts are loose.
Static-electricity precautions
Sony’s PS5 Pro safety guidance says to touch a metal-grounded object before attaching or removing the drive to discharge static electricity. It also warns you not to touch the drive terminal or the corresponding terminal on the console. Handle the drive by its housing and clips, and keep fingers away from those connection areas.

The PS5 Pro’s original configuration uses a circle cover and short horizontal feet. Both come off for the drive installation. Put them somewhere safe rather than discarding them: Sony says the removed circle cover and short feet are needed if you later use the console without the drive attached.
How to install the detachable PS5 Disc Drive
Follow this sequence in order. The cover and feet are model-specific parts of the drive installation, so use the pieces supplied with the drive rather than trying to reuse an older PS5 cover set.

Confirm the model and accessory
Verify that the console is a PS5 Pro in the CFI-7000 group and that you have Sony’s detachable PS5 Disc Drive. If the product is only a cover or is labelled for an older CFI-1000 or CFI-2000 slim configuration, stop before opening the console.

Turn the PS5 Pro completely off
Open the console control center and choose Power > Turn Off PS5. Wait until the power indicator is off. Do not begin while the console is still in a running or rest mode state.

Disconnect the cables and let the console cool
Unplug the AC power cord and disconnect the other cables. Allow the console to cool before handling the covers or attaching the drive. This creates a fully unpowered starting point for the installation.

Position the console on a soft cloth
Spread a soft cloth over a flat surface. Place the console on it with the bottom facing up and the front facing you. Keep the console stable while you remove the original cover and feet.

Remove the short feet and circle cover
Remove the short horizontal feet from the console, then remove the circle cover. Set both pieces aside together so they remain available if you detach the drive in the future.

Ground yourself before handling the drive
Touch a metal-grounded object to discharge static electricity. Avoid the drive terminal and the matching terminal on the console throughout the rest of the installation.

Clip the drive into the console
Align the drive’s clips with the two marked holes on the console. Press firmly and evenly until the drive clicks into place. The click indicates that the clips have engaged; do not force the drive at an angle or press on the terminal area.

Install the supplied circle cover
Take the circle cover supplied with the drive and align its clips with the holes on the console. Press until the cover clicks into place. The supplied cover is part of the PS5 Pro drive configuration and should not be replaced with an older cover set.

Fit the supplied long horizontal feet
Attach the long horizontal feet supplied with the drive. Align them with their mounting points and press until they click. The long feet are the feet for the console with the drive attached; keep the removed short feet with the original circle cover.

Reconnect and power on
Reconnect the AC power cord and the other cables, then turn on the PS5 Pro. During the initial setup, connect the console to the internet so the drive and console can pair.

Internet pairing during first setup
An internet connection is required when the detachable drive is paired with the PS5 Pro for the first time. This is a setup requirement, not an optional convenience. Plan to connect the console before beginning the pairing portion of setup.
If pairing does not complete
- Confirm that the console is connected to the internet during initial setup.
- Check that the drive is fully clipped into the two marked holes and that the supplied circle cover and long feet are installed as shown in the sequence above.
- Make sure the console was shut down through Power > Turn Off PS5 before the physical installation, rather than left in an active or rest state.
- If you opened the console again, disconnect power first, allow it to cool, touch a metal-grounded object, and avoid both terminals while checking the fit.
These checks address the documented requirements: correct model, correct accessory, a complete clip-in installation, and internet access for pairing.
What discs can the installed drive play?
4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
Sony lists 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray among the supported disc formats. The drive therefore adds 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray playback capability to a PS5 Pro that did not include an optical drive in its original configuration.

Blu-ray
Standard Blu-ray discs are also supported. This covers Blu-ray movie discs and other supported Blu-ray media, subject to the disc’s own compatibility requirements.
DVD
The drive supports DVD discs as well. The format list is separate from game compatibility, so a DVD being readable does not by itself say anything about whether a particular game disc will run.
PS5 physical games
The installed drive allows the PS5 Pro to use PS5 physical game discs. Insert the game disc after setup is complete and use the console’s normal game installation and launch process.
Supported PS4 physical games
Sony also says the drive allows use of supported PS4 physical game discs. Keep that qualification when deciding whether to buy a disc version of a PS4 title: Sony does not describe this as universal compatibility with every PS4 disc.

The cover and feet are not cosmetic extras. The installation changes the console’s physical configuration, so Sony supplies a circle cover and long horizontal feet for use with the attached drive. The original circle cover and short feet belong to the drive-free configuration.
Do not mix these parts with covers from another PS5 generation. Sony’s compatibility guidance identifies older CFI-1000 and CFI-2000 slim cover sets as incompatible with PS5 Pro. Even if an older cover appears similar, use the pieces supplied for the drive installation.

Keeping the console reversible
Store the removed circle cover and short feet in a labelled bag or the drive packaging. Sony says you need them when using the console without the drive attached. Keeping them together prevents a future removal from leaving you searching for model-specific parts.
Safe removal or refitting later
If you remove the drive in the future, reverse the same safety principles: turn the PS5 Pro off from the control center, wait for the power indicator to go out, unplug the AC cord and other cables, and allow the console to cool. Work on a soft cloth over a flat surface, touch a metal-grounded object before handling the drive, and do not touch either terminal.
After removing the drive, refit the original circle cover and short feet that you saved. If you reinstall the drive, use the supplied circle cover and long feet again. The two sets correspond to different configurations and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Common installation mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying the wrong accessory
A product page can mention PS5 without being the detachable drive intended for PS5 Pro. Check for the complete PS5 Disc Drive and explicit PS5 Pro/CFI-7000 compatibility. A cover-only item, stand, or older-model cover set does not satisfy that requirement.
Starting while the console is still powered
The documented sequence begins with Power > Turn Off PS5, followed by unplugging the cables and allowing the console to cool. Do not remove covers or attach the drive before the power indicator is off and the cables are disconnected.
Using the original feet with the drive attached
The short feet are for the drive-free setup. Once the drive is installed, fit the long horizontal feet supplied with it. Keep the short feet with the original circle cover for later use without the drive.
Pressing on the terminals
The safety guidance specifically says not to touch the drive terminal or the matching console terminal. Align the clips with the two marked holes and press the drive into position by its housing, not by the terminal area.

Skipping internet access
The console and drive must pair over the internet during initial setup. If you begin without an internet connection, the physical installation can be complete while the required pairing step remains unfinished.
Installation checklist
- PS5 Pro confirmed as the CFI-7000 model group.
- Sony detachable PS5 Disc Drive obtained.
- Soft cloth and flat work surface ready.
- Console turned off through Power > Turn Off PS5.
- AC cord and other cables disconnected; console allowed to cool.
- Metal-grounded object touched before handling the drive.
- Original short feet and circle cover removed and stored.
- Drive clips aligned with the two marked holes and clicked into place.
- Supplied circle cover and long horizontal feet installed.
- Console reconnected, powered on, and connected to the internet for pairing.
Once those checks are complete, the PS5 Pro has the optical capability provided by Sony’s detachable drive: 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, PS5 physical games, and supported PS4 physical games.
