To show viewer messages over a 24/7 nature sounds stream in OBS, create a chat widget with a third-party overlay provider, add its URL to your scene as a Browser Source, then position and test it over your footage. OBS does not supply the chat overlay itself. The steps below use StreamElements’ Twitch chat widget as a concrete example; the general Browser Source method applies across providers, but account setup and widget instructions are not identical on every platform.
What a live chat overlay does—and what it does not
A chat overlay is text rendered into the broadcast picture, so viewers can see messages over the stream. It may also appear in recordings. That is different from a chat dock that only you can see inside OBS. The overlay is supplied by a third party and displayed in OBS through a Browser Source; OBS says it does not directly provide the facilities to show stream chat in the broadcast. For a nature stream, the overlay should be readable without covering the main view. Treat it as one source in the scene, not as a guarantee that the stream itself will stay live or that chat will be moderated.
Set up a StreamElements Twitch chat widget
StreamElements’ documented chat-widget workflow is for Twitch. Use the corresponding instructions from your provider if you stream somewhere else; do not assume this Twitch widget URL or account-linking process works unchanged on YouTube or other platforms.

- In StreamElements, create an overlay and add the Your Stream’s Chat widget.
- Customize its theme and text. StreamElements’ guide suggests a 1080p overlay and notes support for Twitch emotes, including animated emotes; unlisted 7TV emotes are not supported. StreamElements: Chat Widget Configuration
- Save the overlay and copy its URL. Treat that URL as a credential: StreamElements warns that overlay URLs can contain sensitive tokens. Do not show it in screenshots, documentation, or public chat. StreamElements: Adding Overlays to OBS Studio
Add the overlay URL to OBS
- Open the scene for your nature stream. In the Sources dock, select +, then choose Browser. Name the source so you can recognize it, such as “Chat overlay,” and confirm.
- Paste the provider’s overlay URL into the Browser Source URL field.
- Set the Browser Source width and height to match your scene canvas. StreamElements documents 1920×1080 as its default overlay dimensions. That is a provider default, not a requirement; use the dimensions that fit your OBS canvas and overlay layout.
- Choose the Browser Source frame rate appropriate to your stream and computer. StreamElements lists 30 or 60 FPS options and says the choice depends on stream settings and computer capability; it is not necessary for a text chat widget to use 60 FPS in every setup.
- Select OK, then drag the source in the preview to position it. Resize it with the source handles, or use OBS transform controls if you need more precise placement.

Make chat readable over forests, water, and changing light
Place the chat where it avoids the focal part of the landscape: for example, an edge or a low-detail area rather than the center of a waterfall, animal, or horizon. Preview it over the actual video, not just a static thumbnail; moving foliage, reflections, and day-to-night changes can make text disappear against the background.

- Use enough contrast between the message text and the footage. A shadow or backing treatment can help on bright backgrounds; StreamElements specifically suggests text shadows for readability.
- Keep the widget compact enough that it does not dominate a slow, atmospheric scene. Check the longest message and username you expect to display so they do not spill beyond the source area.
- Confirm that the chat theme, text size, and position remain legible at the size viewers will watch. A layout that looks clear on a large OBS preview may be too small on a phone.
Test the scene and protect the overlay URL
- Preview the scene in OBS and verify that the correct overlay source is visible above the video source in the Sources list.
- Send or arrange a test message through the platform’s normal chat and confirm that it appears in the broadcast preview. If nothing appears, check the copied URL, selected provider account/widget, and whether the platform’s chat is available to the intended viewers.
- Keep the overlay URL private. If you accidentally expose it, use the provider’s available controls to regenerate or replace the overlay URL, then update the Browser Source in OBS.
A Browser Source overlay only handles displaying chat. It does not keep OBS running, ensure an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast, or filter inappropriate messages.
Plan chat moderation and long-stream archives
Moderation for an unattended stream
Visible chat is not moderated just because it appears on screen. Assign moderators and configure the platform’s available chat controls before leaving a continuous stream unattended. YouTube provides moderator roles and controls for holding potentially inappropriate messages; YouTube may turn off chat if stream content or chat violates its Community Guidelines. YouTube replay and DVR limits
If the nature stream is on YouTube, do not assume a single very long broadcast will produce a complete replay or offer unrestricted rewind. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; it recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. YouTube also says DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If a replay or rewind matters, record locally and plan stream segments around the archive requirement. YouTube Help: Enable DVR on live streams

One more YouTube-specific caveat: Live Chat is available on YouTube watch pages, not embedded players. If viewers watch your stream in an embedded player on another site, they may not see the live chat there. YouTube Help: Use live chat
