1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf OBS’s Dropped Frames counter is rising, first check the connection and bitrate—not the encoder preset. If OBS reports Rendering Lag or Encoding Overloaded, investigate GPU and encoding workload instead. Those are different problems, and an OBS update happening beforehand does not by itself prove it caused them.
Identify which OBS counter is increasing
Open OBS’s statistics or status indicators while streaming, then note the specific counter and whether the connection indicator is green, yellow, or red. OBS defines network dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to keep up with the configured bitrate. An increasing dropped-frames count, especially with a yellow or red connection indicator, points toward the network path to YouTube ingest or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. It is typically outside OBS Studio’s control. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide explains the distinction.
Rendering lag and encoding overload are separate indicators. They point to OBS not having enough resources to render the scene or encode the stream, often because of GPU load. Lowering bitrate is not the first fix for GPU overload; lowering resolution is not the first fix for a network drop. Use the branch that matches the counter. See OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide.
If the dropped-frames counter is rising: compare network and bitrate settings
1. Compare bitrate with stable upload capacity
In OBS, open Settings → Output and inspect the video bitrate. Compare it with the upload capacity your connection can sustain during the time you stream—not merely the peak result from one speed test. OBS suggests using about 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. This is a heuristic, not a guarantee: other devices, congestion, Wi-Fi conditions, or a changing route can make usable upload lower or less stable.

If the connection cannot sustain the current bitrate, lower it and test again. Do not lower it below the relevant YouTube recommendation simply by habit: choose a bitrate that fits both the content settings and your stable connection. A speed test taken at a quiet moment does not prove the same capacity will be available during a live gaming session.
2. Compare the output with YouTube’s encoder recommendations
YouTube’s live encoder settings page recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. The following H.264 figures are YouTube’s published recommendations; the page was accessed on October 3, 2026. They are not a promise that your internet connection can sustain the recommended bitrate.

| Output | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
Recommendations differ by codec and frame rate, so consult YouTube’s page for the exact combination you use rather than assuming an H.264 figure applies to H.265 or AV1. YouTube’s Live Control Room detects resolution and frame rate automatically by default and transcodes incoming streams into multiple output formats.
In OBS, compare the output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s target settings. Make one change at a time and test with representative gameplay and audio before an important stream. Monitor both OBS’s counters and YouTube’s stream health during the test.

3. Check the route, connection type, and network software
- Try wired Ethernet if practical. OBS warns that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. Test an existing cable and router port before buying replacement hardware.
- Check the network path. If useful, test another streaming service to help distinguish a YouTube-specific route issue from a general connection problem; that test alone does not establish the cause.
- Review network-affecting software. Temporarily investigate VPNs, firewalls or security software, network-prioritization utilities, and recent network-driver changes. OBS names Lenovo Vantage and Killer NIC software as examples of tools that may deprioritize OBS traffic.
- Check the equipment methodically. A cable, router or modem, network card, or another device could be at fault. Change one part at a time and consult your ISP before replacing hardware when the cause is uncertain.
OBS documents optional Network Optimizations and TCP pacing controls for Windows; some users report that they help, but they are not a guaranteed fix. Keep Bind to IP set to Default. Testing IPv4 Only is an option; if it makes no difference, restore the IPv4/IPv6 default. Dynamic bitrate can reduce bitrate during congestion and thereby reduce dropped frames, but it can lower stream quality and does not repair the underlying connection problem. These controls and caveats are described in OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide.
If rendering lag or encoding overload is rising: reduce workload
OBS uses GPU resources to composite scenes. A game or other GPU-heavy work can leave too little capacity for OBS, even when the internet connection is fine. Use OBS’s encoding-performance guidance to work through these changes:

- Free GPU headroom. Cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync; reduce game graphics settings if needed. Close other GPU-heavy applications you recognize and do not need during the stream.
- Reduce output workload if needed. Consider lowering the output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not working, test 30 fps. These changes address rendering or encoding load; they do not directly repair an unstable network route.
- Simplify the scene. Reduce scene, source, and filter complexity where practical. Keep the sources that matter for the stream and test after each change.
- Reserve a canvas change for severe limits. Lowering the base canvas resolution is generally not recommended as an early step because it can require repositioning sources. Consider it only when resources are severely constrained.
There is no universally correct encoder brand or preset for this symptom. The right choice depends on your hardware, available encoders, current OBS log, and workload; switching to NVENC, x264, or another encoder is not guaranteed to fix the issue. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide provides the relevant performance checks.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the update timeline without assuming it caused the drops
OBS says updates should leave settings intact, while noting that other software can interfere with an update or its aftermath. Security software may scrutinize changed OBS files, for example. Check whether your OBS output settings changed, whether permissions or security-software rules affect OBS, and whether another system or network change coincided with the update. The fact that drops began afterward is a useful clue, not proof of an OBS regression.

The documentation cited here does not identify a particular OBS release as the cause of YouTube frame drops. Without your operating system, OBS version, encoder, hardware, ingest configuration, output settings, network conditions, and OBS log, it is not possible to name the exact setting responsible or prescribe a machine-specific encoder preset.
Troubleshoot in a controlled order
- Dropped Frames rises, connection indicator is yellow or red: compare bitrate with stable upload; check Wi-Fi versus wired, network software, and the route to YouTube. Test dynamic bitrate only as a quality-for-continuity fallback.
- Rendering Lag rises: reduce GPU contention, game frame rate, scene complexity, or output workload.
- Encoding Overloaded rises: check OBS’s encoding performance branch, then test a lower output resolution or frame rate if needed. Do not choose an encoder preset without considering the machine and log.
- The symptom began after an update: verify settings and review security software or other system changes before attributing it to OBS.
- The indicator and counter do not identify a branch: capture an OBS log and note which counter increases during a representative test. That evidence is more useful for selecting a setting to change than the update timeline alone.
