The practical way to add loyalty to WooCommerce is to install a points-and-rewards extension, set separate earning and redemption rates, enable coupons, require customer accounts, and test every customer-facing screen before launch. WooCommerce core does not define loyalty rules on its own. The official WooCommerce Points and Rewards extension is the most directly documented route: it awards points for purchases or selected actions, then converts those points into checkout discounts.

What a WooCommerce loyalty program does
A loyalty program gives customers a balance of points that can later reduce an order total. A typical flow is:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A customer signs in and buys a qualifying product.
- WooCommerce records points according to your earning rate.
- The customer sees the balance in My Account and an available redemption message in the cart or checkout.
- At a later purchase, the customer applies points as a coupon-style discount.
The official documentation describes the extension as a way to reward purchases and other actions with points that can be redeemed for discounts. The extension is separate from WooCommerce itself, so adding it is an extension installation and configuration project rather than a core setting.
Choose the implementation before you configure anything
For a straightforward purchase-points program, start with WooCommerce Points and Rewards. If your program depends on ranks, badges, referrals, affiliate payouts, or a larger gamification system, compare extensions against those specific requirements instead of choosing by feature count alone.

Whichever extension you select, verify current WooCommerce and WordPress compatibility, support terms, account-area displays, checkout behavior, reporting or export, developer hooks, and subscription handling. Those details determine the operating cost after installation.
Plan the economics before awarding points
The two conversion rates are separate controls:
- Earn Points Conversion Rate: how many points a customer receives for each currency unit of qualifying spend.
- Redemption Conversion Rate: how many points are required to create a discount.
The implied reward cost is determined by both settings, not by the earn rate alone. For example, if a store awards 10 points per $1 and requires 100 points for $1 off, a $100 qualifying purchase creates 1,000 points, worth $10 in future discounts. That is a hypothetical illustration; use your own currency, margins, returns policy and qualifying-product rules when setting rates.

- Whether points use the order subtotal, total, tax, shipping or another qualifying amount.
- Which products, variations or categories are excluded or have a different rate.
- Whether points are issued only after payment is complete and how refunds or cancellations are handled by the chosen extension.
- The maximum discount allowed on one order and any minimum points balance or spend requirement.
- Whether promotional products can earn points, redeem points, or both.
Model the highest possible discount against gross margin. A generous earning rate combined with a low redemption threshold can turn a profitable sale into an expensive future liability.
Prerequisites for the official points workflow
- A functioning WooCommerce store with products, prices, tax and shipping settings already tested.
- The WooCommerce Points and Rewards extension obtained through WooCommerce.com and installed using its documented “Add to store” or subscription installation flow.
- WooCommerce coupons enabled. Points are converted into discounts through the coupon system.
- Customer accounts enabled. Customers must have accounts to earn and redeem points; guest checkout does not earn points.
- A staging copy or a controlled test period, especially when importing historical orders or changing live balances.
Install and configure WooCommerce Points and Rewards
1. Install the extension
- Obtain the extension through WooCommerce.com.
- Use the documented “Add to store” or subscription installation process.
- Activate it in WordPress, then open WooCommerce > Points & Rewards > Settings.
Do not start by importing old orders. Establish and test the rules on a small set of current orders first.
2. Set the earning conversion
Enter the number of points awarded per currency unit in Earn Points Conversion Rate. Select the rounding mode that determines what happens when a qualifying amount produces a fraction of a point. Make the rate and rounding rule understandable in your customer-facing copy; otherwise customers may calculate a different balance from the one the store records.
The extension allows a global rate and overrides at product, variation or category level. Use the global rule for the normal program and overrides only where a margin or campaign decision justifies them. Check a simple product, a product with a variation, and an item in an overridden category during testing.

3. Set the redemption conversion
In Redemption Conversion Rate, define how many points produce a unit of discount. Keep the unit explicit for your store currency. A setting of 100 points for $1 off is not equivalent to 100 points for €1 off if your catalog uses another currency or if exchange-rate logic is involved elsewhere in the store.
Set any maximum discount controls and product or category restrictions at the same time. Confirm whether a customer can use points on the same products that generate them, and test the minimum and maximum boundaries rather than only a typical order.
4. Enable coupons and accounts
Turn on WooCommerce coupons in the store settings. Require or encourage account creation for the loyalty path. The official flow depends on an authenticated customer record; a guest order cannot accumulate points for later use.
If guest checkout is important for conversion, present account creation as part of the post-purchase journey, but do not promise points on the guest transaction unless your selected extension explicitly supports that behavior.
5. Add optional action rewards
The extension can reward account signup and a customer’s first product review. Enable only actions you can verify and moderate. A review reward should not be presented as payment for a positive review; reward the act of submitting an eligible review under clear store terms.
Third-party integrations can add actions through the documented filters and event types. Treat every custom action as a transaction rule: define when it fires, whether it can fire once or repeatedly, how cancellations are reversed, and what happens if the same event is received twice.

6. Edit customer-facing messages
Customize the cart and checkout redemption message and the order-received message. Supported placeholders include {points} for a points amount and {points_value} for its discount value. Keep the wording precise about when points become available and whether the displayed value is an available discount or an amount already applied.
7. Verify the customer journey
Use a test customer account and walk through the complete path:

- Open a qualifying product page and confirm the points-earning message appears.
- Complete an order and check that the expected points are recorded after the applicable order event.
- Open My Account and verify the balance and history.
- Add another qualifying item to the cart and confirm the redemption prompt and available balance.
- Apply points at cart or checkout, place the order, and verify the discount, remaining balance and order-received message.
Repeat with a non-qualifying product, a category override, a variation override, a refund or cancellation test, and an account that has no points.
8. Handle previous orders cautiously
The extension includes Apply Points to Previous Orders for importing legacy purchase activity. Its documentation warns that this operation cannot be reversed. Export or document current balances, decide exactly which historical orders qualify, and run the operation only after testing the selection and rate logic on a copy of the store.
How customers earn and redeem points
Purchases
Purchase points follow the earning conversion rate and any product, variation or category override. The customer-facing product message should match the actual qualifying rules. If a product has a special rate, show or explain that difference rather than displaying a generic estimate.
Signup and first review
Action rewards can bring a new customer into the program before a second purchase. Define whether signup points are granted when the account is created, when email verification is complete, or at another event supported by the extension. For first-review rewards, specify what counts as an eligible review and how moderation affects issuance.

Cart and checkout redemption
Redemption is shown in the cart and checkout for an eligible logged-in customer. The discount is constrained by the redemption conversion rate and any maximum discount or product/category rules. Test partial balances, a balance larger than the order, and an order containing both eligible and excluded items.
My Account history
My Account is the customer’s source for current balance and transaction history. Review the labels after changing rates so old entries remain understandable. Do not silently change the value of already-issued points without a documented migration or customer notice.
Subscriptions and recurring orders
When WooCommerce Subscriptions is installed, points are automatically earned for subscription renewals. Points are not applied to automatic renewal payments, although customers can use them on manual renewals. Your program copy should distinguish an automatic renewal from a customer-initiated manual renewal so subscribers do not expect points to reduce every recurring charge.
Test an initial subscription order, an automatic renewal, a manual renewal and a failed or cancelled renewal. Confirm when points post and whether the account history identifies the related order clearly.

Testing checklist before launch
- Account state: logged-in customer, new account, guest and a customer with zero points.
- Products: global rate, product override, variation override, category override and excluded item.
- Amounts: whole currency unit, fractional amount, minimum redemption and maximum discount.
- Order lifecycle: successful payment, cancellation, refund and any pending status used by your gateway.
- Checkout: cart redemption, checkout redemption, coupon conflicts, taxes and shipping presentation.
- Messages: product-page earning text, cart and checkout prompt, order-received text,
{points}and{points_value}rendering. - Subscriptions: initial order, automatic renewal and manual renewal.
- Administration: balance history, reports or exports available in your chosen extension, and staff permissions.
Record the expected balance for each test order. A points problem is much easier to diagnose when you can compare the recorded amount with a written calculation.

Points are stored in the {prefix}_wc_points_rewards_user_points table. In a WordPress multisite installation, each site has its own balance; points do not automatically form one network-wide wallet.

The extension provides maintenance actions under WooCommerce > Status > Tools. Resetting all points and clearing logs removes customer points and cannot be undone. Deleting plugin data removes settings, user points, logs, product and category point settings, and coupon point settings; that deletion is also irreversible.
Before either operation, export or otherwise document balances, rules and customer communications. Treat a reset as a data migration or closure event, not as routine troubleshooting.

Developer hooks and custom integrations
The official extension documents filters and event types for third-party actions. A developer can use those interfaces to connect approved events, but the integration should be idempotent: receiving the same event twice must not award points twice. Log the source event, customer ID, order ID where applicable, points awarded, and reversal status.
Keep custom code separate from the extension’s files so updates do not overwrite it. Test the integration after WooCommerce, WordPress, the extension or a payment gateway changes, and include a way for staff to reconcile an unexpected award.
Troubleshooting common failures
No points appear after an order
- Confirm the customer was logged in rather than using guest checkout.
- Check that the product or category is not excluded or assigned a zero override.
- Review the order status and the extension’s earning event behavior.
- Recalculate the amount with the configured rounding mode and qualifying subtotal.
The redemption option is missing
- Verify coupons are enabled.
- Confirm the customer has enough points for the redemption threshold.
- Check maximum-discount, product and category restrictions.
- Test in the cart as well as checkout; a theme or checkout customization may hide the standard message.
The displayed value is confusing
- Review the redemption rate and currency wording.
- Check that
{points}and{points_value}are used in supported message fields. - Compare the customer’s My Account history with the order calculation.
Subscription customers expect points on renewals
Explain the documented distinction: subscription renewals earn points automatically, but automatic renewal payments cannot consume points. Manual renewals can use points when otherwise eligible.
Operational decisions that prevent expensive surprises
- Publish a short earn-and-redeem explanation beside the product and account messages.
- Define treatment of refunds, cancellations, chargebacks and duplicate events before launch.
- Set a maximum discount that protects margin on large carts.
- Review balances and unusual awards regularly, especially after custom integrations.
- Keep a dated record of conversion-rate changes so support staff can explain historical balances.
- Plan an export before any reset, data deletion or legacy-order import.
A small, clearly defined program is easier to support than a large collection of overlapping bonuses. Start with purchase points and one or two verified actions, then add tiers, referrals or badges only when the store can measure and administer them reliably.
