How to Add a Now-Playing Title to a 24/7 Cartoon Stream in OBS

For a simple title overlay, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video Source for your cartoon playlist, Tuna to write the current item’s title to a text file, and an OBS Text Source to display that file. The title can update as the playlist changes, provided the selected VLC source exposes useful metadata for each video. This workflow adds an overlay; it does not by itself keep a broadcast online around the clock or establish permission to rebroadcast cartoons.

What you need

  • OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s documentation says the VLC Video Source requires VLC and notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. [OBS VLC Video Source documentation]
  • Tuna, a third-party OBS plugin that can read information from an OBS VLC source and write formatted output. Check its project instructions for installation and compatibility with your operating system and OBS build. [Tuna project]
  • Your cartoon video files, with useful title metadata embedded or another reliable way to map each file to the title you want to show.

OBS’s Text Source can read text from a file. That makes a file-backed label a straightforward way to put Tuna’s output in the scene. [OBS Text Sources documentation]

Set up the playlist and now-playing overlay

  1. Confirm the VLC source is available. Install OBS Studio and VLC, matching their bitness as required by OBS. In OBS, open the Sources panel, select +, and confirm VLC Video Source appears. If it does not, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
  2. Create the cartoon playlist. In Sources, select + → VLC Video Source and create the source. Add your cartoon files to its playlist. Enable Loop Playlist if you want playback to start again after the playlist ends; enable shuffle only if you want items in a different order. OBS describes Loop Playlist as restarting the source at the end of the playlist. [OBS VLC Video Source documentation]
  3. Install and configure Tuna. Follow the current instructions in Tuna’s project documentation. In Tuna’s VLC settings, select the OBS scene and the VLC Video Source that contains the cartoons. Tuna documents VLC-source support and configurable output, including a title or “now playing” format. [Tuna project] [Tuna OBS forum resource]
  4. Write the title to a file. In Tuna, set the output to a text file and choose the title field or an appropriate formatting string. Use the forum resource’s configuration guidance if needed; available fields depend on what the selected source provides. [Tuna OBS forum resource]
  5. Add the text file to the scene. In OBS’s Sources panel, select + → Text (choose the text source option available in your build). Enable its file-reading option and browse to Tuna’s output file. Position and style the text in the preview. In the source order, place the text source above the VLC Video Source so it appears over the cartoon. OBS documents customizable text sources that can read from a file. [OBS Text Sources documentation]
  6. Test transitions before relying on it. Play several items and confirm that the displayed title changes at playlist transitions. If a title is blank or incorrect, check which VLC source Tuna is following, whether Tuna’s output file is being updated, and whether the video’s metadata contains a useful title. A file with no usable title field cannot supply a meaningful episode name automatically.

Make sure the displayed title is trustworthy

OBS does not identify an episode’s name by interpreting the video image. The overlay displays information Tuna can obtain from the chosen source, so its accuracy depends on the files’ metadata and Tuna’s source selection. Tuna’s documentation notes that available fields depend on source support; the reviewed instructions do not establish that cartoon libraries consistently contain complete or correct title fields. [Tuna OBS forum resource]

  • Inspect the title field for several files, including files from different sources or seasons.
  • Check whether the output includes only the title you want, rather than a filename or other metadata.
  • If your files lack useful titles, create a separate, dependable mapping from each playlist item to its intended label; the reviewed documentation does not provide a turnkey cartoon-title database or widget.

Use a Browser Source for a more custom design

If you need custom typography, animation, or a more elaborate layout, OBS Browser Source can load a local HTML file or a URL and supports custom viewport dimensions. You still need a page or integration that receives the current title; Browser Source alone does not provide a ready-made cartoon now-playing widget. [OBS Browser Source documentation]

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a plain title label, a file-backed Text Source is the simpler documented route. A Browser Source offers more layout flexibility, but requires the page or integration as well.

What the overlay does not solve

  • Continuous broadcast reliability: a looping playlist and a working title overlay do not prove that the stream will remain live 24/7, or that it will restart automatically after an OBS, computer, network, or platform failure.
  • Platform rules: check YouTube’s current live-stream requirements for your channel and intended broadcast. The OBS and Tuna instructions cited here do not establish compliance with platform-specific continuous-live rules.
  • Copyright and rebroadcast rights: technical ability to play cartoon files does not grant permission to stream them. Make sure you have the necessary rights, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules before broadcasting.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to check
VLC Video Source is missing in OBS VLC is not installed, or its bitness does not match OBS. Install the VLC version matching OBS. OBS specifically notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. [OBS VLC Video Source documentation]
The title never changes Tuna may be pointed at a different scene or VLC source, or the output file may not be updating. Verify Tuna’s scene and source selection, then check its configured output file and test another playlist transition. [Tuna OBS forum resource]
The title is blank or unhelpful for some cartoons The file may not provide a usable title field; metadata availability varies by source. Inspect the file’s metadata and decide on a reliable mapping for items without meaningful embedded titles. [Tuna OBS forum resource]
The text is hidden behind the video The Text Source is below the VLC source in OBS’s source order. Move the text source above the video source in the Sources panel.
The playlist stops at its end Loop Playlist is disabled. Open the VLC Video Source settings and enable Loop Playlist. [OBS VLC Video Source documentation]
Tuna does not work in the installed OBS environment Third-party plugin compatibility may differ across OBS packages, operating systems, or Linux distributions. Follow Tuna’s current installation instructions and validate the plugin on the actual host before depending on it for a continuous broadcast. [Tuna project]

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping a channel live from uploaded videos. It does not go live from a camera, and a now-playing overlay still needs to be prepared as part of your video or broadcast setup. To use it, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded content in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
