Rented servers use the same configuration concept but may expose it differently. Some hosting panels require a generated password hash and salt in SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg instead of accepting a plaintext password. Follow the provider’s editor and restart controls in that case.

In the official Windows dedicated-server tool, the control is in Server settings → General → Password. It appears alongside fields such as Listen IP, Port, Server name, World name, and Steam Group ID. The password is a server-wide join requirement: a player who does not supply the correct value cannot enter the protected instance.
Keen Software House describes the field as: “Password – Password for the server, if you need protected private server.” The label is therefore intended for a private or invitation-only server, not for a separate player whitelist.

Self-hosted PC dedicated server: step-by-step
1. Open the dedicated-server tool
Install or launch Space Engineers Dedicated Server on the Windows machine that runs the instance. If the instance is configured as a Windows service, or you are creating and managing a service instance, run the tool with administrator rights. Without the required rights, the tool may be unable to create, update, or control the service instance.
2. Select or create the server instance
Use the tool’s instance screen to add a new server or select the existing one. Continue to the server-configuration view for that instance. Make sure you are editing the instance that your players actually use; changing a different instance does not change the running world.

Open Server settings, choose General, and find Password. Type the secret you want players to use. Treat it as a shared credential: anyone who knows it can attempt to join, so do not paste it into a public server description, stream overlay, or open chat channel.

4. Save the configuration
Choose Save and start when you want to write the setting and launch the instance immediately. If the server is already running and the tool offers only a save action, save the change and then restart the instance. A value shown in the editor is not enough by itself; the running process must load the updated configuration.
5. Give the details to invited players
Send trusted players the server name and the password through a private channel. They select the server in the multiplayer browser or use the normal join flow, then enter the password when prompted. If the server does not appear after the change, troubleshoot visibility and connectivity separately from the password setting.
How to password-protect a rented server
A rented server normally stores its dedicated-server settings in an editor supplied by the host. Open the panel’s configuration-file editor for SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg. The exact buttons and restart workflow vary by provider.

Check whether the panel expects a hash and salt
Some hosting instructions require you to generate a password hash and salt, then place those values in the configuration file. In that arrangement, do not assume that adding a plaintext <Password> value will work. Use the host’s documented generator or fields, copy the resulting hash and salt into the locations it specifies, and preserve the file’s existing structure.
Apply the edit and restart
Use the panel’s Save, Apply, or equivalent control, then perform the provider’s restart action. The new access rule is active only after the dedicated-server process has reloaded the file. If the panel has separate controls for saving files and restarting the server, perform both operations in that order.
Locate the file when you have direct access
Keen support identifies SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg in the SpaceEngineersDedicated AppData/configuration area. The precise installation path and instance folder can differ, especially when several instances or a host-managed layout are present. Use the instance’s own configuration path rather than editing an unrelated copy.

Password, Steam-group restriction, or both?
A dedicated server does not provide the same one-click “friends only” mode as a player-hosted world. The documented access controls are a password and, where configured, limiting visibility to a Steam group. These controls solve different problems.

Use a password when the priority is quick private invitations. Consider a Steam-group restriction when you need membership-based visibility. Combining them is possible when the additional filtering is worth the extra coordination. A password is not a replacement for Steam-group membership, and a Steam-group setting is not the same thing as a password.
Self-hosting versus renting: what changes?

Confirm that the protection is active
- After saving, verify that the instance is running again. A server that was never restarted may still be using its previous settings.
- From a separate player account or with a trusted invitee, start the normal join process and enter the configured password.
- Confirm that the correct password allows entry.
- Test with an intentionally incorrect value. The incorrect attempt should not grant access.
- If you also configured a Steam group, test an account that is not in that group. A password alone should not be treated as proof that the group restriction is working.
Run this check after changing either the password or the Steam-group setting. Testing from a separate connection helps distinguish an actual access rule from a local administrative session that may already be authenticated.

Troubleshooting password problems
The Password field is missing
- Confirm that you opened the Space Engineers Dedicated Server tool rather than the ordinary game’s world-hosting screen.
- Open the selected instance’s Server settings and then General; the field is not described as a separate “privacy” page.
- If you manage a Windows service instance, close and relaunch the tool with administrator rights, then select the intended instance again.
- On a rented server, use the host’s configuration-file editor. The panel may expose hash-and-salt fields instead of a visible plaintext password box.
The password appears saved, but players can still join without it
- Check that you used Save and start, or that you restarted the already-running instance after saving.
- Make sure the player is connecting to the same server instance you edited. Multiple instances can have different names, worlds, and configuration files.
- For a rented server, confirm that the panel’s apply operation completed and that the server was restarted afterward.
- If you edited a file manually, verify that it was the active
SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfgfor the instance, not an unused copy in another AppData or installation folder.
The correct password is rejected
- Have the player re-enter the value exactly as supplied, without an extra space at the beginning or end.
- Check that the server actually completed its restart after the latest edit; an old process may still be using the previous value.
- On a rented host, confirm whether the panel expects a generated hash and salt. A plaintext entry in a hash-based configuration will not necessarily be interpreted as the intended password.
- Verify any separate Steam-group requirement. A correct password does not override a group restriction configured for the server.
The server is not visible
Visibility and authentication are separate checks. A password does not make a dedicated server “friends only,” and it does not guarantee that the server will appear in every browser view. Check the instance’s server name, Listen IP, Port, and Steam Group ID settings, then confirm that the server is running. Change only one setting at a time so you can identify which control affects the result.

Review the provider’s configuration editor after the restart. If the host regenerates files or uses a managed template, reapply the setting through the panel instead of relying on a local copy. Keep a private record of the intended password and, where applicable, the generated hash and salt so you can restore the configuration without posting the secret publicly.
Operational practices for a private server
Share the secret deliberately
Send the password only to the people who should join. A password is a shared invitation, not an individual account. If someone who should no longer have access knows it, change the value in the same place where you originally set it and restart the instance so the old value stops working.
Keep configuration access restricted
On a self-hosted machine, limit Windows access to the account or administrators who manage the server. On a rented server, protect the hosting-panel login and avoid copying configuration text into public support channels. The configuration file may contain more server details than the password alone.
Document which control you use
Write down whether the instance uses password-only access, a Steam-group restriction, or both. This prevents a later administrator from removing one control while believing the other provides the same protection. Record the server instance name and its configuration location as well, particularly when several worlds share one machine.
What the password does—and does not do
- It adds a join requirement to the dedicated server.
- It does not create separate permissions for individual players.
- It does not automatically limit visibility to a friends list.
- It does not replace a Steam-group restriction when group membership is part of your access policy.
- It does not become active until the saved configuration is loaded by a start or restart operation.
For a small invited group, the shortest reliable workflow is: select the correct dedicated-server instance, enter the value under Server settings → General → Password, save, restart if necessary, and test both a valid and invalid join. If the server is rented, apply the equivalent change through the host’s SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg editor and use the provider’s required hash-and-salt format when specified.
