Choose the right kind of user
A permanent user signs in with their own platform account and can use it again later. A child should have a separate child account linked to the adult family account, so family settings and parental controls can be applied. The steps below cover those account-based setups. An account-based sign-in is different from a temporary guest; the Xbox guest instructions are not available in the cited support content, so no guest sequence is included here.

Add a permanent user on PS5
- From the PS5 home screen, select the profile picture.
- Choose Switch User > Add User > Get Started.
- At the sign-in screen, choose to create an account or sign in with an existing PlayStation account. An account already used on PS4 can also be used on PS5.
- To create an account, enter the requested information and verify the email address using the message PlayStation sends. The email must be accessible for verification and account recovery. PlayStation’s account-creation guide says account creation is free and does not require payment details.
Account setup asks for a date of birth, country or region, language, sign-in email, password, online ID, and name. Enter the correct date of birth and country or region: PlayStation says neither can be changed later.
Add a child account on PS5
Create a separate child account and link it to the adult family account; PlayStation supports setting up parental controls alongside the child account. Its PS5 quick start guide also says family and parental-control settings carry over when using an existing PS4 account. Review the child’s restrictions after setup.

Add a child’s account on Xbox Series X|S
Sign the child into the console
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Sign in, then choose Add new.
- Sign in with the child’s Microsoft account. Microsoft says the console should then appear in the child’s connected devices. See Microsoft’s device-connection instructions.
Add the child to the family group
On the console, go to Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members > Add to family > Add new. If the child does not yet have an Xbox account, Microsoft says they can create a Microsoft account to associate with a new family group. If account setup does not work
- PlayStation says the email is already in use: PlayStation directs users to contact support to verify the email account.
- Account creation is interrupted: A lost connection or PlayStation maintenance can stop the flow. Check your connection and PlayStation service status before trying again.
- You are setting up a child: Use the child’s own account and the family-management steps above, rather than creating a shared adult account as a substitute.
