To add an extension icon to the Firefox toolbar, open the Extensions button (the jigsaw-puzzle icon), open the installed extension’s menu, and choose Pin to Toolbar. Firefox immediately places the extension’s button on the navigation toolbar. If you later want a different position, use Customize Toolbar… and drag the pinned icon. To remove it from the toolbar without uninstalling the extension, clear Pin to Toolbar; the extension returns to the Extensions panel.

What the Firefox Extensions button does
Firefox uses the Extensions button, shown as a jigsaw-puzzle icon, as the central place to access installed browser extensions. Mozilla describes the button and panel as a way to “access, remove, report and manage your extensions and their permissions, directly from the toolbar.” An extension can remain installed and enabled without having its own icon permanently visible. In that state, you open the Extensions panel whenever you need it.

Toolbar icon versus Extensions panel

Only extensions that provide a browser-action button can display a toolbar icon. Some add-ons, including certain search-engine add-ons, do not offer Pin to Toolbar because they have no browser-action button to place there.
Pin an extension to the Firefox toolbar
These steps add an extension icon to the toolbar without reinstalling the add-on.
- Open Firefox. Use the Firefox window in which the extension is installed.
- Open the Extensions button. Select the jigsaw-puzzle icon in the toolbar. This opens the Extensions panel.
- Find the installed extension. Scan the panel for the add-on whose button you want to make visible. If the extension is already pinned, it will not appear as an unpinned entry in this panel.
- Open the extension’s menu. Use the extension’s gear or three-dot menu. The menu belongs to that specific extension, so make sure you are opening the row for the correct add-on.
- Select Pin to Toolbar. Firefox places the extension’s icon on the navigation toolbar. Mozilla’s documented label is exactly Pin to Toolbar.
The result is immediate: the extension button is now visible beside the other controls on the navigation toolbar. You can select that icon whenever the extension’s browser action is needed, while the Extensions button remains the place to manage the add-on and its permissions.

The Extensions panel is not a complete list of every extension in every state. Disabled extensions and extensions that are already pinned do not appear in the panel view used for pinning. If no extensions are installed, or if every installed extension is disabled or already pinned, Firefox opens the Add-ons Manager’s Personalize Your Firefox page instead of showing the expected list.

A private-browsing window can also show a different set of extensions from a regular window. If an add-on appears in one type of window but not the other, check which Firefox window you are using before changing settings.
Move a pinned extension button
Pinning makes the icon visible, but it does not necessarily put it in your preferred order. Firefox lets you reposition pinned extension icons through the toolbar customization page.
- Right-click the toolbar. Use an empty area of the navigation toolbar or a toolbar control.
- Choose Customize Toolbar… Keep the ellipsis in mind when looking for the command; this is Firefox’s exact menu label.
- Locate the pinned extension icon. On the Customize Firefox page, find the extension button you pinned.
- Drag the icon to the desired position. Drop it where you want it on the navigation toolbar. The order of the toolbar controls updates to match the new position.
- Finish customization. Leave the Customize Firefox page using Firefox’s normal completion control so the new arrangement is retained.
This process changes placement, not the extension’s installed or enabled state. If the icon disappears from the toolbar after customization, open the Extensions button and check whether the extension is still pinned.

Choosing a useful position
Place frequently used browser actions near the controls you use alongside them, and group less frequently used buttons farther along the toolbar. Firefox treats the toolbar as one ordered row: dragging an icon changes its position relative to the other controls rather than creating a duplicate button.

Remove an extension icon without uninstalling the extension
If the toolbar is crowded, you can remove an extension button while keeping the extension installed.
- Right-click the pinned extension. On a Mac or another setup using a single-button pointing device, use Control-click when appropriate.
- Clear Pin to Toolbar. The menu wording may appear as the unpin action or as the checked Pin to Toolbar option that you clear.
The extension icon leaves the navigation toolbar and the extension returns to the Extensions panel. This is an unpin action, not an uninstall action: the add-on remains available and can be pinned again later from its per-extension menu.
Unpinning versus disabling
Unpinning changes visibility. Disabling changes whether Firefox can run the extension. Because disabled extensions are absent from the normal Extensions panel list, a missing row is not evidence that an extension was uninstalled. Check the extension’s enabled state in Firefox’s extension-management interface before reinstalling anything.

“Firefox extension button not showing” can describe two different problems: the jigsaw-puzzle Extensions button itself is hidden, or the individual extension icon is not present. Identify which control is missing before troubleshooting.

The Extensions button itself is hidden
Firefox lets you remove the Extensions button from the toolbar while keeping its functions available.
- Open the toolbar context menu by right-clicking the visible Extensions button when it is available.
- Choose Remove from Toolbar. The jigsaw-puzzle icon is hidden, but extension functions remain available under Extensions in Firefox’s application menu.
- To restore it, right-click the button when visible and choose Always Show in Toolbar. Firefox can also move the button to another position on the navigation toolbar.
If the button is currently hidden, use the Extensions entry in Firefox’s application menu to reach extension controls, then restore the button through the toolbar’s customization controls if needed. The exact path can vary with the controls currently visible in your Firefox window, but hiding the button does not remove installed extensions.
The individual extension icon is missing
- Check whether it is already pinned. An extension already pinned to the toolbar does not appear as an unpinned item in the Extensions panel. Look along the navigation toolbar for its icon.
- Check whether it is disabled. Disabled extensions do not appear in the normal panel list used for pinning. Open Firefox’s extension-management interface and confirm that the add-on is enabled before looking for Pin to Toolbar.
- Check the browsing mode. A private window can show a different extension list from a regular window. Repeat the check in the window type where you installed or enabled the extension.
- Check whether the add-on has a browser-action button. Some search-engine add-ons and other extensions do not provide a browser-action button, so Firefox has no icon to pin and no Pin to Toolbar command for them.
- Check whether no extensions are available. If all installed extensions are disabled or already pinned, or if none are installed, Firefox may open the Add-ons Manager’s Personalize Your Firefox page instead of displaying the panel list.
Grant permissions when an extension shows a notification dot
Manifest V3 extensions can display a notification dot when they need permission for the current site. The dot is a status signal from the extension panel, not a second toolbar button.
- Open the Extensions panel from the Extensions button.
- Find the extension with the green dot. The dot identifies the extension requesting attention.
- Open that extension’s menu. Use its menu controls in the panel.
- Choose the permissions to grant. Review the request and select the permissions you are willing to allow for the current site.
Pinning an extension does not automatically grant new site permissions. If a green notification dot remains, use the extension’s panel menu to review the request rather than assuming that the toolbar icon itself has failed.

Visibility, placement and state: the practical choices
When deciding whether to add an extension icon to the toolbar, separate three decisions: where the control is visible, where it sits, and whether the extension is active.

A reliable workflow for managing several extension buttons
For an extension you use every day
- Open the Extensions button and locate the enabled extension.
- Open its gear or three-dot menu.
- Select Pin to Toolbar.
- Open Customize Toolbar… and drag the icon beside the controls you use with it.
This gives the extension a stable, visible location while preserving the Extensions panel for permission and management tasks.
For an extension you use occasionally
- Leave the extension unpinned so the toolbar stays less crowded.
- Open the Extensions button whenever you need the extension.
- If you later need faster access, use the same per-extension menu and select Pin to Toolbar.
Unpinned does not mean removed. It simply keeps the button in the panel until you decide that a permanent toolbar position is worthwhile.

When reorganizing after an extension update
First check the extension’s state and pin status. A disabled extension will not be available in the usual panel list, while an already pinned extension may be visible only on the toolbar. Once the extension is enabled and its button is visible, use Customize Toolbar… to restore the desired order rather than attempting to install it again.

- Is there a green dot? Open the extension with the dot in the Extensions panel and review the site permissions it requests.
