To add llms.txt to WordPress, publish a UTF-8 Markdown file at your domain root so it is available at https://your-domain.example/llms.txt. WordPress.com Business and Commerce sites can use its managed workflow; self-hosted WordPress sites can generate the file with a plugin or upload it manually.

The file is a curated index of public, high-value pages—not a replacement for robots.txt or an XML sitemap. The convention is still emerging, so publishing it is a discoverability measure rather than a promise of ChatGPT citations, rankings, or traffic.

What an llms.txt file does
An llms.txt file is a plain-text or Markdown document at the root of a website. Its expected address is the domain followed directly by /llms.txt, such as https://example.com/llms.txt. The document gives an AI system a short description of the site and a selected list of useful public pages.
Unlike an XML sitemap, which can enumerate URLs for search-engine crawlers, llms.txt is intentionally selective. You choose the pages that best explain your site, product, documentation, or organization. A concise list of canonical, stable pages is more useful than exporting every tag archive, pagination URL, search result, or transient campaign page.

The format is not an official requirement of major search engines or language-model providers. Project LLMs.txt documentation states: “No major search engine or LLM provider has officially announced that they seek out llms.txt files.” No implementation can therefore guarantee inclusion in an answer, improved rankings, or additional visits.

Option 1: Use WordPress.com
WordPress.com documents the built-in feature for Business and Commerce plans. If your site is on another listed tier, the dashboard will require an upgrade before this workflow is available.

- Audit your public content. Make a short list of pages that explain what the site is, who it serves, and where a reader should begin. Include documentation, key guides, current pricing or plan information when relevant, and contact or support pages that are intended for the public.
- Write the Markdown file. Start with one heading naming the site, add a sentence describing its subject and audience, then group links under descriptive headings. Keep each description short and explain why the page belongs in the list.
- Open the llms.txt feature in the WordPress.com dashboard. Follow the dashboard’s publishing workflow for your Business or Commerce site, paste or enter the Markdown, and publish it at the root path.
- Check the public address. Open
https://your-domain.example/llms.txtin a private browser window. Confirm that the response contains your intended text and that the URL does not redirect to a login screen or a page editor.
WordPress.com’s managed approach removes server-file permissions from the process, but it does not select the right pages for you. Revisit the list whenever your information architecture changes.
Option 2: Generate it with the Website LLMs.txt plugin
The WordPress.org Website LLMs.txt plugin creates the file from published WordPress content. It can take visibility settings from Yoast SEO, Rank Math, SEOPress, and AIOSEO, allowing pages that those tools exclude from public indexing to stay out of the generated list when the integration is active.

- Install the plugin. In the WordPress administrator, go to
Plugins → Add New, search forWebsite LLMs.txt, install the plugin published through WordPress.org, and activate it. - Open its settings. Go to
Settings → LLMs.txt. Review the proposed entries before generating anything. Remove sections or pages that are not useful to an anonymous reader. - Set inclusion and exclusions. Keep only public, stable URLs. Check how the plugin handles noindex and SEO visibility controls on your site, and use its editor-level inclusion controls only for pages you deliberately want listed.
- Choose a regeneration schedule. The plugin documents immediate, daily, weekly, and manual generation. Use immediate generation for a site that changes frequently, a scheduled option for a maintained publication, or manual generation when every change needs editorial review.
- Generate and test. Save the settings, generate the file, then visit
/llms.txtas an anonymous visitor. Confirm that the response is the latest version and that every listed link opens without authentication.
When the web root cannot be written
Some hosts prevent plugins from creating files in the document root. The Website LLMs.txt plugin documents a fallback that stores a copy in the uploads directory and serves it at /llms.txt through a rewrite rule. The public address remains the same even though the physical copy is elsewhere.
If the URL returns a 404 after generation, clear the site and server caches, then resave WordPress permalinks and test again. A cache can continue serving an old 404 even after the rewrite rule is present.

Project LLMs.txt is another WordPress plugin option. Its documentation lists WordPress 6.4 or higher and PHP 8.1 or higher as requirements. Check both versions before installation, especially on older managed hosting accounts.
- Verify the environment. In
Dashboard → Updates, check the WordPress version. Confirm the PHP version in your host’s control panel or hosting support documentation. - Install and configure the plugin. Add it from the WordPress Plugins screen, activate it, and review the generated content and inclusion controls provided by the plugin.
- Select the delivery mode. Physical-file mode needs permission to write to the WordPress root directory. If the host denies that permission, use a supported serving method or choose a different implementation rather than granting broader permissions than necessary.
- Open the root URL. Test
https://your-domain.example/llms.txtfrom an unauthenticated browser session and inspect the file for private or obsolete links.
Option 4: Create and upload the file manually
Manual publication is the most portable method when you control your host’s document root or deployment pipeline. It does not require a plugin and does not depend on a particular WordPress version.

- Create a new text file. Use a plain-text editor and save the file as UTF-8 with the exact lowercase filename
llms.txt. Do not let the editor append a second extension such as.txt.txt. - Write a concise index. Add a site heading, one-sentence description, and grouped Markdown links. Use the canonical HTTPS URL for each page and a short explanation of its value.
- Find the web root. In a host file manager, deployment repository, or SFTP account, locate the directory that serves the domain’s homepage. Hosts may label it differently; common labels include a document-root or public web directory. Do not place the file inside
wp-contentunless your host’s routing is explicitly configured to expose that location as the root URL. - Upload or deploy the file. Copy
llms.txtinto that root directory using the host’s file manager, your normal deployment process, or SFTP. Preserve the filename and UTF-8 encoding. - Verify the result. Open
https://your-domain.example/llms.txt. You should see the Markdown or plain text directly, without a WordPress theme wrapper. Test in a private window so an administrator login cannot hide an access problem.
Use a clear, useful file structure
There is no requirement to reproduce your entire navigation menu. Organize the file around the questions a reader or automated system is most likely to have. Headings make the list scannable, while descriptions provide context that a bare URL cannot.

What to leave out
- Drafts, private pages, password-protected material, and URLs that an anonymous visitor cannot open.
- Secrets, API keys, credentials, customer information, internal dashboards, or unpublished launch pages.
- Dead links, duplicate URL variants, tracking parameters, and temporary campaign pages that no longer represent the site.
- Pages intentionally marked noindex, unless you have a specific editorial reason to include one and your generator provides an explicit inclusion control.
- Every low-value archive or utility URL simply to make the file longer.
Use HTTPS canonical URLs and keep descriptions factual. A short, accurate list is easier to maintain and less likely to send an agent toward an outdated or inaccessible page.

Validate the published file
- Check the exact path. Visit
/llms.txtat the domain root. A file in/wp-content/uploadsis not equivalent unless a plugin or server rewrite exposes it at that root path. - Confirm the response. The browser should display the intended plain text or Markdown. A WordPress 404 page, login form, redirect loop, or HTML error page means the file is not being served correctly.
- Test anonymously. Use a private browsing window or log out of WordPress. This catches permissions that appear to work only for administrators.
- Open every listed URL. Check that each link resolves to the canonical destination, is publicly readable, and still contains the information described in the entry.
- Inspect privacy. Make sure no draft, customer-only page, password-protected URL, or unpublished address appears in the output.
- Regenerate after major edits. For a plugin-managed file, use the configured immediate, daily, weekly, or manual schedule. For a manual file, edit and redeploy it whenever important pages move or change.
Troubleshoot common failures
The URL returns 404
First confirm that the filename is exactly llms.txt and that it was placed in the directory serving the domain root. If the Website LLMs.txt plugin is using its uploads fallback, clear plugin, page, and server caches, then resave permalinks. Test again while logged out. If the problem persists, ask the host whether rewrite rules are allowed for the site.
The plugin cannot create a physical file
This is a filesystem-permission issue, not a Markdown error. The Project LLMs.txt physical-file mode requires write permission to the WordPress root. You can use a host-supported fallback, change the deployment method, or upload the file manually through SFTP. Avoid granting blanket write access to unrelated directories just to make the generator work.

Old pages remain in the output
Check the plugin’s regeneration setting and trigger a fresh generation. Then purge caches that may be serving an earlier copy. If you maintain the file manually, remove redirected or retired URLs and redeploy the updated text.
Private content appears
Remove the entry immediately, review the generator’s anonymous-content and noindex controls, and test the public URL while logged out. Recent versions of the Website LLMs.txt plugin are documented as omitting content an anonymous visitor cannot read while allowing explicit inclusion from the editor; verify the actual output rather than assuming a visibility setting was applied.
The file opens as a webpage instead of text
Check that the request is reaching the root file rather than a WordPress template or redirect. A correctly routed file should expose the Markdown or plain text itself. Server configuration can affect the content type, but the first diagnostic is whether the requested path is actually /llms.txt.
Maintain llms.txt alongside, not instead of, other discovery files
Keep robots.txt and your XML sitemap maintained separately. A sitemap helps search-engine crawlers discover URL inventories; robots.txt communicates crawl rules; llms.txt presents a deliberately chosen set of valuable pages. None of these files grants access to private content, and llms.txt should never be used to publish a URL that the site intends to keep confidential.

Set an owner and review interval for the file. Review it after a site migration, permalink change, product rename, documentation restructure, or deletion of a major guide. A scheduled generator reduces the chance of a stale list, but editorial review is still needed when page purpose or audience changes.
Does llms.txt improve ChatGPT visibility?
There is no established guarantee. The convention is emerging, and the Project LLMs.txt documentation explicitly says that no major search engine or LLM provider has officially announced that it seeks out these files. An AI system may ignore the file, use other crawlable sources, or rely on information that changed after your document was generated.
Publishing a well-maintained file can still be a reasonable technical housekeeping step: it gives any compatible tool a compact map of your highest-value public pages and makes your editorial priorities explicit. Treat that benefit as potential discoverability, not as a ranking tactic. Continue investing in accurate page content, accessible navigation, canonical URLs, normal search-engine controls, and a current XML sitemap.

Whichever route you use, the essential checks are the same: the file must be at the domain root, contain only information you intend to publish, link to public canonical pages, and be tested from an anonymous session.
