How you add a widget in WordPress depends on the active theme. A classic theme exposes widget areas under Appearance > Widgets (and often Appearance > Customize > Widgets), while a block theme normally puts equivalent header, footer and sidebar editing in Appearance > Editor. Identify the theme type first, then add blocks, configure them, save, and verify the result on the correct template.

First, identify which WordPress editing system you have
The word “widget” now describes two related experiences. Classic themes register named widget areas such as a sidebar or footer. You fill those areas with widgets, which are represented by blocks in the newer block-based Widgets Editor. Block themes use full-site editing instead: what used to be a widget area is usually a template or template part containing blocks.

| Active theme | Where you edit | What you add | How changes are saved |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic theme | Appearance > Widgets, or Appearance > Customize > Widgets | Blocks in registered widget areas; older widgets appear as Legacy Widget blocks | Use Update in the Widgets screen, or the Customizer’s save/publish control |
| Block theme | Appearance > Editor (Site Editor) | Blocks in templates and template parts such as the header and footer | Use Save in the Site Editor |
Labels can differ slightly by WordPress version, translation and theme. The decisive clue is the left-hand admin menu: if you see Appearance > Widgets, follow the classic-theme instructions below; if that menu is absent and Appearance > Editor is present, use the block-theme workflow.
How to add a widget with a classic theme
Open the widget editor
- Sign in to your WordPress dashboard.
- Go to Appearance > Widgets. If your installation offers the Customizer instead, go to Appearance > Customize > Widgets.
- Choose a registered area, such as Footer, Sidebar or a similarly named region. The available areas are supplied by the active theme, so their names and number vary.
The Widgets screen is block-based in current WordPress releases. You are editing a vertical list of blocks inside the selected area rather than a separate old-style widget form.

Add the block that provides the feature
- Inside the chosen widget area, select the + inserter.
- Search for the feature you need, such as Search, and select it. Other common choices include a navigation, image, text, categories or recent-posts block when those blocks are available in your installation.
- With the new block selected, use the settings sidebar to set its title, display options and other controls. The available settings depend on the block.
- Select Update to save the widget area. When working through the Customizer, use its save or publish control after checking the live preview.
Open the public page that uses that area to confirm placement. A footer block will appear only on templates that actually include the theme’s footer area; a sidebar block may be absent on a full-width page by design.
Use the Customizer when you need a live preview
Classic themes that support the Customizer expose widget areas at Appearance > Customize > Widgets. Select an area, add or edit blocks, and inspect the preview as you work. This is useful when a change affects spacing, colors or the relationship between a sidebar and the main content. The preview is not the published site until you use the Customizer’s save or publish control.

How to move, reorder and remove widgets
Move a block to another widget area
- Open Appearance > Widgets and select the area containing the block.
- Select the block you want to relocate.
- Open its block toolbar and choose Move to widget area.
- Choose the destination area, review the resulting order, and select Update.
This transfers the block rather than creating a second copy. If the destination is not listed, the active theme has not registered that area.

Reorder items within an area
In the Widgets Editor, select a block and use the block’s move controls or drag handle to place it above or below another block. Save with Update. Reordering changes the sequence in which visitors encounter the items, so put high-value navigation or search controls before secondary material and keep a footer’s legal or contact links in a predictable order.
Remove a widget without deleting its content elsewhere
Select the block in the widget area, open the block’s options menu, and choose the remove command. Save the area. Removing a block from a widget area does not delete a page, post or media item that the block referenced; it removes that display instance from the selected area.
What happens to older classic widgets?
Older classic widgets are represented in the block-based Widgets Editor as Legacy Widget blocks. Their existing settings are retained, allowing a site to keep an older widget while gradually replacing it with a modern block. Select the Legacy Widget block to edit the original widget’s controls; the exact fields depend on that widget.

If a site owner needs the former drag-and-drop widget screen, the WordPress team’s Classic Widgets plugin restores that interface. It has no settings screen: install and activate it, then return to the Widgets area. This is a compatibility choice for administrators or themes that still depend on the old interface, not a requirement for ordinary block-based widget editing.
How to add equivalent “widgets” in a block theme
Open the Site Editor
- Go to Appearance > Editor.
- Open the part of the site you need to change. Depending on the theme, this may be a template or a reusable template part such as Header or Footer.
- Navigate to the specific area in the editor where the new element belongs.
Block themes generally do not show a separate Appearance > Widgets menu. The absence of that menu is expected when the theme is built for full-site editing.
Insert and configure a block
- Select the + inserter at the location where the element should appear.
- Search for and select the block you need, such as Search, Navigation, Image or a text block.
- Configure the block in the settings sidebar and, where available, use the block toolbar to adjust alignment or layout.
- Select Save. Review which template or template part the editor lists before confirming, because saving a shared part can change it everywhere that part is used.
For example, adding a Search block to the Footer template part places it on every template that uses that footer. Adding it to a single page template affects only pages using that template. The editor’s template structure, rather than a widget-area name, determines the scope.

Replace an old sidebar concept with a block layout
A block theme may not label any region “Sidebar.” To recreate one, select the relevant template, add a Group, Columns or similar layout block, and place the desired content blocks inside it. Save the template, then check a page that uses that template. If the theme does not provide the layout you need, the available templates and template parts define what can be edited without changing theme code.

| Question | Classic theme | Block theme |
|---|---|---|
| Where is the control? | Appearance > Widgets, or Appearance > Customize > Widgets | Appearance > Editor |
| What defines placement? | A theme-registered widget area such as Footer or Sidebar | A template or template part and its block hierarchy |
| Can you preview while editing? | Yes, through the Customizer when the theme provides it | The Site Editor shows the template as you edit; exact preview controls vary |
| How are older widgets handled? | They may appear as Legacy Widget blocks in the block-based editor | They are normally replaced by ordinary blocks inside templates or template parts |
| What if the expected menu is missing? | Check that the active theme registers widget areas and that your account can manage appearance settings | Use the Site Editor; a separate Widgets menu is generally not part of the theme’s workflow |
Why WordPress widgets are missing and how to fix it
You cannot find Appearance > Widgets
First check the active theme. A block theme normally routes this work through Appearance > Editor. Open the relevant template or template part and add blocks there. If you expected classic widget areas, confirm the theme documentation or switch to a theme that registers them; the menu cannot display an area the theme has not defined.
The area you need is not listed
Widget areas are theme-dependent. A theme may provide a footer but no sidebar, or several footer columns instead of one combined Footer area. You cannot select an unregistered area from the classic editor. In a block theme, look for a matching template part or add the element to the appropriate template layout instead.

The change saved but is not visible
- Check that you edited the area or template used by the page you are viewing.
- Confirm that the block or template part was saved, not merely changed in an unsaved preview.
- Check responsive or conditional layout settings that may hide an element at a particular screen size.
- View another page that uses the same template to determine whether the change is global or limited to one template.
The block looks different from the editor
Front-end styles come from the active theme and its global settings. Review the block’s own settings first, then the theme’s typography, colors and spacing controls. A theme can intentionally constrain a widget area’s width or hide overflow, so a block that is available in the inserter may still have limited room in the published layout.
You cannot edit or save the area
Your account must have permission to manage appearance settings. Ask an administrator to verify your role and any site-management restrictions. On a multisite installation, network policies can also limit theme and plugin changes even when ordinary content editing works.

A practical workflow for a clean widget layout
- Map the destination. Decide whether the item belongs site-wide in a header or footer, on a group of pages using one template, or only in a particular sidebar-like area.
- Identify the theme model. Use Widgets or the Customizer for a classic theme; use the Site Editor for a block theme.
- Choose the smallest suitable block. Prefer a focused Search, Navigation, Image or text block over stacking several overlapping blocks that repeat the same information.
- Configure labels and links. Give controls descriptive text, check that links go to the intended destination, and avoid headings that merely repeat the surrounding page title.
- Check the visual order. Review desktop and narrow-screen layouts, especially in a footer or sidebar where long titles can wrap.
- Save at the correct scope. Use Update in a classic widget area or Save in the Site Editor, and note whether you changed a shared template part.
- Verify several page types. Open a post, a page and any custom content type that uses a different template. A widget area or template part may not appear on every layout.
Managing widgets safely over time
Document what a shared area controls
Before making a large change, note which pages use the area or template part. In a classic theme, a footer widget area can be reused throughout the site. In a block theme, a shared Footer or Header template part can affect every template that includes it. This makes a small edit powerful but also means an unintended change can be site-wide.
Replace legacy items deliberately
Do not remove a Legacy Widget block simply because it is old. Record its visible output and settings, then test a block replacement on a staging copy or a low-risk template when possible. Keep the legacy version until the replacement reproduces the required content and behavior.
Keep the interface focused
Every widget competes for attention and space. Remove duplicate navigation, outdated announcements and empty areas. A shorter footer or sidebar is easier to scan and less likely to break on narrow screens. After deleting an item, check the public page rather than assuming the editor’s outline reflects the final rendered spacing.
Quick checklists
Adding an item to a classic theme
- Appearance > Widgets (or Appearance > Customize > Widgets)
- Select the target widget area
- Use the + inserter
- Choose and configure the block
- Select Update or the Customizer save/publish control
- Verify a public page that uses the area
Adding an item to a block theme
- Appearance > Editor
- Open the relevant template or template part
- Insert and configure the block
- Save and confirm the affected template scope
- Check pages that use that template
When a widget appears to be missing
- Determine whether the active theme is classic or block-based.
- Look for the corresponding registered area or template part.
- Confirm you saved the correct editor and area.
- Check the page’s template and responsive visibility.
- Ask an administrator about editing permissions if controls are disabled.
Key takeaway
There is no single WordPress widget screen for every site. Classic themes use named widget areas in the Widgets screen or Customizer; block themes use blocks inside templates and template parts in the Site Editor. Once you match the instructions to the active theme, adding, moving, removing and maintaining these site elements follows the same cycle: choose the correct destination, configure the block, save at the right scope, and verify the pages that use it.
