To add commands such as !rules or !schedule to YouTube Live chat, connect a chatbot that supports YouTube Live, create and activate a custom command in its dashboard, then test it in a public live chat. This guide uses StreamElements’ documented setup; Nightbot is another option, but its YouTube joining requirements are similar.
How YouTube Live chat commands work
A chat command is a message trigger handled by a chatbot: a viewer enters a command and the bot posts its configured response. StreamElements identifies its chatbot as supporting YouTube Live and custom commands (StreamElements chatbot overview). The examples here illustrate possible uses; choose responses that suit your channel.
Set up StreamElements for YouTube Live
Make the stream public and live
StreamElements says its bot cannot join a private or unlisted stream and must join while the channel is live. Plan to do the connection and test during a public broadcast, rather than relying on an offline, private, or unlisted preview (StreamElements bot setup guide).
Add the bot as a moderator
- Open YouTube Studio and select Settings.
- Open Community.
- Add StreamElements as a moderator using a channel URL provided in StreamElements’ setup guide, then save the setting.
- Start a public YouTube Live stream so the bot can join.
Labels in YouTube Studio can change over time; if your interface differs, use YouTube Studio’s current Community settings and follow the linked StreamElements guide.

Create and activate a custom command
- Open the StreamElements bot command dashboard and choose Custom commands.
- Select Add new command.
- Enter the command name, such as
!rules, and write the response viewers should receive. - Choose a response type if appropriate. StreamElements documents Say, Mention, Reply, and Whisper.
- Adjust optional advanced settings, such as aliases, cooldowns, loyalty-point cost, or conditions—for example, a condition that allows a command only while live.
- Select Activate command to save it.
These controls are useful for different purposes: aliases let viewers use alternate triggers, cooldowns limit repeated responses, and conditions restrict when a command runs. Set only the controls your command needs; an overly restrictive condition can make a working command appear broken. Test commands and manage them in chat
Once the bot has joined the public live chat, enter the exact trigger as configured and check whether the bot posts the expected response. This test follows from StreamElements’ documented requirement that the stream be live and public for the bot to join; it is not a substitute for activating the command in the dashboard.

StreamElements also documents moderator-access command management through chat using !command or !cmd. For example, the documented add syntax is !command add !<command_name> <response_text>. Its command reference also describes chat-side options to remove, edit, inspect aliases, and configure commands. Nightbot as an alternative
Nightbot is another chatbot option for YouTube. Its official setup page says it joins YouTube only when the channel is live and the stream is public, citing YouTube API rate limits (Nightbot setup documentation). The command-creation instructions available here do not establish Nightbot’s dashboard steps or whether its command controls match StreamElements’, so consult Nightbot’s own current command documentation before configuring it.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The bot does not appear in chat: confirm the broadcast is both public and live, and check that you added StreamElements as a moderator in YouTube Studio’s Community settings.
- The command gets no response: check that the command is active, that you typed its trigger exactly, and that any conditions allow it to run in the current stream state.
- The response repeats too often: set or increase the command’s cooldown in its advanced settings.
- Viewers cannot use an expected alternate spelling: add the spelling as an alias and test that trigger in the live chat.
