To show selectable closed captions on a YouTube Live stream, captions must reach YouTube through a supported live-caption method. A caption file on your computer—or text displayed over the video in OBS—does not by itself create a closed-caption track viewers can toggle. For a stream without a separate caption feed, YouTube documents stream-level automatic captions, subject to eligibility limits. If you need prepared captions, use a supported encoder outputting embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions or supported caption software that sends captions to YouTube.
Choose how captions will reach YouTube
YouTube distinguishes the visible words in a video from a live caption track. Its Live caption requirements explain that you need to send captions to YouTube for them to appear as live captions. There are three routes to consider:
| Route | What it does | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube automatic captions | YouTube generates captions from the live audio. | The documented setup is English-only, applies to normal-latency streams when professional captions are unavailable, and must be enabled for each stream. |
| Embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 | A compatible encoder sends captions embedded in the video stream. | Enable Embedded 608/708 in Live Control Room and configure the encoder to output EIA 608/CEA 708. YouTube currently supports one caption track through this route. |
| Caption software over HTTP | Supported caption software sends captions separately to YouTube. | Use supported software; YouTube says each stream entry point has one caption feed. |
YouTube lists Total Eclipse/AccuCap, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net in its live-caption guidance. That listing does not establish that a particular version works with a particular OBS setup. Verify compatibility with the software provider and YouTube before relying on it. YouTube also lists a 30-second or 60-second broadcast delay for the separate caption-ingestion-URL event workflow; that is not a general delay setting for every live-caption method.
Set up YouTube automatic captions for the live stream
This is the simplest documented route when the cartoon audio is in English and the stream meets YouTube’s stated conditions: normal latency and no professional captions available. Captions are generated from audio, so this route does not use a prepared subtitle file.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the stream you plan to use.
- Find that stream’s Closed captions setting and select Automatic captions as the caption source.
- Start the OBS program only after confirming that the stream is configured for the intended caption route.
- Check the viewer-facing YouTube stream and confirm that captions can be turned on and that their timing follows the cartoon dialogue.
Automatic live captions are not a dependable substitute for checking the result: recognition can be affected by speech clarity, music, sound effects, character voices, and overlapping dialogue. The documented automatic-caption option is English-only; do not assume it will caption other languages.
Use prepared captions with an embedded or separate feed
Embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions
- In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s Closed captions setting, choose Embedded 608/708, and save.
- Configure the encoder to output captions in EIA 608 or CEA 708 format. Selecting the option in YouTube alone does not create or embed captions.
- Confirm that the encoder is actually sending the caption data, then test the live viewer experience, including caption toggle and synchronization.
This route is appropriate only when the encoder and caption workflow can produce the required embedded format. YouTube currently documents one caption track for embedded 608/708.

Caption software sending captions over HTTP
If a captioner or captioning application will send captions separately, use software supported for YouTube’s live-caption workflow and configure its feed for the stream. YouTube says each stream entry point has one caption feed. Confirm the software’s current setup and compatibility directly; a supported caption feed is distinct from an OBS text source.
Keep OBS playlist playback separate from caption transport
There are two separate jobs: OBS must produce the cartoon playlist’s picture and audio, and a supported route must deliver captions to YouTube. The caption requirements described here do not establish a particular OBS menu path for creating or looping a media playlist, nor do they establish that loading an SRT or VTT file into OBS sends closed captions to YouTube. Do not treat a visible text overlay as proof that a selectable caption track is being transmitted.

- Configure and verify the cartoon playlist’s playback and repeat behavior using the OBS workflow appropriate to your installed version.
- Separately configure one of YouTube’s live-caption routes above. Do not assume that playlist playback configures captions.
- Start the stream and test on YouTube as a viewer. Check whether captions can be toggled and whether they stay synchronized with the cartoon audio.
- After the live stream ends, check the processed replay separately if you need captions on the archive.
What happens to captions on the replay?
YouTube says live-generated automatic captions do not remain on the archived stream. YouTube creates separate captions for the VOD afterward, and those captions may differ from the live captions. Check the replay after processing rather than promising that the live caption track will carry over.
A caption file format accepted for an uploaded video is not, by itself, proof that the same file can be sent from OBS as live captions. For example, YouTube’s caption-file guidance lists formats including SCC, but that does not establish a live transport method. Treat upload captions and live caption delivery as separate workflows.

Troubleshoot common caption problems
- Captions appear as text in the picture but viewers cannot toggle them: The text may be an OBS overlay rather than a YouTube caption track. Configure a supported live-caption route and test the viewer controls.
- A subtitle file is loaded, but YouTube has no live captions: A local file does not establish live delivery. Use automatic captions, an encoder sending embedded 608/708, or supported caption software over HTTP.
- Embedded captions are selected in Live Control Room but nothing appears: Check that the encoder is configured to output EIA 608/CEA 708 and is actually sending caption data; the YouTube setting alone is insufficient.
- Automatic captions are missing: Check whether the stream meets the documented normal-latency and professional-caption conditions, whether the per-stream source is set to Automatic captions, and whether the audio is English.
- Live captions do not match the cartoon: Test the actual viewer stream for timing and recognition quality. If automatic recognition is unsuitable, consider a prepared caption route with compatible encoding or supported caption software.
- The replay has no captions, or its captions differ: Live-generated captions do not persist to the archive; inspect the separately generated VOD captions after processing.
