In eligible regions, a channel can qualify for earlier access to fan-funding and Shopping features at a lower threshold; Watch Page ads, Shorts Feed ads, and YouTube Premium revenue require the higher threshold. Neither threshold guarantees acceptance: YouTube reviews the channel and each earning feature can have its own requirements.
Which YPP threshold do you need?
As of October 2026, YouTube describes two levels of access. The expanded YPP threshold can provide earlier access to certain features, while the standard threshold is required for ad and YouTube Premium revenue. The lower threshold does not unlock Watch Page or Shorts Feed ad sharing.

These are alternative activity routes within each level: a creator does not need to meet both the watch-hour and Shorts-view measures. YouTube’s current country and feature availability can vary; check the Earn area in YouTube Studio for the options available to your channel.
What counts toward the thresholds?
Qualified public watch hours
The 4,000-hour and 3,000-hour routes use eligible public long-form video watch time in their respective 12-month windows. Shorts Feed watch time does not count toward these totals. YouTube also excludes watch hours from private, unlisted, or deleted videos; ad campaigns; and livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to video on demand.

Qualified Shorts views
The Shorts routes count qualified views of public Shorts in the Shorts Feed over the preceding 90 days. Private, unlisted, or deleted Shorts, ad campaign views, and image posts in the Shorts Feed do not count. Paid campaign views and watch time do not help meet YPP thresholds.
Check your channel’s progress
Use YouTube Studio’s Earn area to see the progress YouTube currently credits to your channel. This is more useful than adding up lifetime views or watch time yourself, because the thresholds use specific rolling windows and exclude ineligible activity.

Other requirements and how to apply
Meeting the numbers makes a channel eligible for review; it does not automatically enroll the channel in YPP. YouTube’s overview also lists policy compliance, residence in a country or region where YPP is available, no active Community Guidelines strikes, 2-Step Verification, access to advanced features, and an active AdSense for YouTube account linked to the channel or ready to be set up.
- Open YouTube Studio and select Earn to check your region’s available features and your credited progress.
- Meet one activity route at the relevant access level, along with its subscriber and, for expanded YPP, upload requirements.
- Complete any remaining account requirements shown in Studio, including 2-Step Verification, advanced features access, and AdSense for YouTube setup or linking.
- Apply through the Earn area when YouTube makes the option available. YouTube reviews the channel against its monetization policies before deciding.
- After acceptance, review and accept the terms or monetization modules required for each feature you intend to use.
Feature access is not uniform: age, geography, content, policy, and feature-specific conditions may apply even after YPP acceptance. Use the Earn area and YouTube’s current feature guidance rather than assuming one threshold enables every earning option.

YPP includes several distinct revenue features. A creator can have access to some without having access to all of them.

- Shorts Feed ads: revenue sharing for eligible Shorts after accepting the Shorts Monetization Module. Shorts views from before acceptance are not eligible for sharing under that module.
- YouTube Premium: revenue associated with eligible Premium members watching content.
- Fan funding: channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks, where available and where the channel meets each feature’s rules.
- Shopping: eligible creators may feature their own store and, where permitted, products from other brands through YouTube’s Shopping affiliate program.
Revenue shares use different bases
YouTube publishes these terms for creators who accept the corresponding modules. They are not interchangeable percentages of gross revenue.

The terms in a creator’s YouTube Studio agreement control. YouTube does not guarantee that a creator will earn a particular amount or receive payment. Finalized earnings appear in AdSense for YouTube and may be affected by adjustments, invalid traffic, claims or disputes, withholding, and local tax obligations. Creators should consult their local tax authority for jurisdiction-specific guidance.
What YouTube reviews—and what can put monetization at risk?
YouTube expects monetized content to be original and authentic. Borrowed material needs significant transformation; channels built around mass-produced, generic, repetitive, or manipulative output may fail review. Reviewers can consider the channel as a whole, including its theme, most-viewed and newest videos, the share of watch time associated with particular content, metadata, and About section.

YouTube can continue checking a channel after approval and remove monetization for policy violations regardless of whether the channel still meets the subscriber or activity thresholds. YouTube also reserves the right to remove monetization from channels that have no uploads or posts for six months or more.
Seeing ads on a video is not proof that its creator is receiving a share. YouTube may show ads on channels that have not met the higher YPP criteria, without those channels being entitled to ad revenue.

Announced YPP changes for February 1, 2027
YouTube has announced updated YPP terms and activity requirements beginning February 1, 2027. These are future changes, not the current qualification thresholds described above. YouTube says creators must accept applicable updated terms in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027 to continue earning through the associated features.
Under the announcement, a channel will be considered active if it meets at least one of these measures: 1,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days, 1 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, or uploads two long-form videos or five Shorts every 90 days. The announcement also discusses changes to YouTube Premium Lite revenue. Check the terms and notices in Studio as the start date approaches, since feature rules and availability can change.

Keep a gaming livestream running while you build eligibility
A livestream can support a gaming channel, but it is not a shortcut around YPP’s content and policy review. For watch-hour qualification, YouTube excludes livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to video on demand. Make sure your stream and any replay meet the public-content conditions, and consider whether your stream contains material you have the right to use. YouTube’s monetization review still evaluates originality and the channel overall.
