To caption a YouTube livestream, either enable YouTube’s live automatic captions for an eligible English-language stream, or send caption data through your encoder as embedded 608/708 captions or through supported caption software. The right method depends on your language, stream latency, channel access, and whether you have a captioner.
Choose a caption method

YouTube requires caption data to reach the stream; enabling a setting alone does not create captions. See YouTube’s live caption requirements.
Turn on YouTube’s automatic live captions
YouTube’s live automatic captions are currently English-only, enabled separately for each stream, and rolling out to English channels. YouTube says the feature is being rolled out to channels with more than 1,000 subscribers; availability is not guaranteed just because a channel meets that threshold. Automatic captions require normal latency and are unavailable for low- and ultra-low-latency streams, including some mobile streams. Check YouTube’s automatic captioning guidance for current availability.
- In YouTube, select Create > Go live.
- Select Stream in the left menu.
- Open the stream settings and turn on Closed captions.
- Choose Automatic captions as the caption source.
- Select the video language. YouTube’s current help page lists English for this option.
If the automatic-caption option is missing, confirm that it has rolled out to your channel and that the stream is not set to low or ultra-low latency. Automatic recognition can also fail or be incomplete with poor sound, unsupported language, speech it cannot recognize, overlapping speakers, or simultaneous languages.

Send captions through your encoder
Embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or open the stream.
- Go to Settings > Setup.
- Turn on Closed captions, choose Embedded 608/708, and save.
- Configure your encoder to send EIA 608/CEA 708 captions. Depending on your setup, the encoder may read a caption file or encode caption data in real time.
The 608/708 standard can support up to four language tracks, but YouTube currently supports one caption track for this workflow. The encoder must send the caption data; selecting the option in Studio does not supply it.
Caption software and HTTP ingestion
- In the Live Control Room’s advanced settings, set a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay, as YouTube instructs for this workflow.
- Turn on Closed captions and copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL.
- Give that URL to your captioner or supported caption software, then save the stream settings.
- Confirm that the caption feed is connected to the correct stream entry point. YouTube allows one caption feed per stream entry point.
YouTube names these software options and minimum versions: Total Eclipse/Eclipse AccuCap 6.0.0.5 or later; Case CATalyst BCS 14.52 or later; CaptionMaker 5.22 or later; and StreamText.Net, a cloud-based caption delivery system described as compatible with speech-to-text platforms. These are options listed in YouTube’s help page, not endorsements or price guidance. Confirm current compatibility and setup with the software vendor or caption provider.

YouTube advises keeping the system clock accurate and checking whether antivirus software is interfering with caption software. Treat the ingestion URL as stream setup information and share it only with the caption provider who needs it.
Prepare and test before going live
- Verify the selected caption source and, for automatic captions, the stream language and latency.
- For embedded captions, confirm both the Studio setting and the encoder’s 608/708 output.
- For external captioning, confirm the captioner has the correct signed ingestion URL and that the broadcast delay is configured.
- Run a test with audio and movement similar to the planned event. Preview the stream in the Live Control Room, check messages and stream health, and monitor audio and video quality.
- Reduce background noise and avoid speakers talking over one another where possible.

Troubleshoot captions that do not appear

What happens to captions after the livestream?
Live automatic captions do not remain on the video as the same caption track after the stream ends. YouTube generates captions later through its video-on-demand process, and those captions may differ from the live version. Review the archived video’s captions rather than assuming the live track carries over. YouTube encourages creators to review automatic captions because recognition errors can occur.
