How to Fix Streamlabs Desktop Stuttering with Media File Caching

Media-file caching may reduce repeated decoding of looping sources, but it is not a universal stutter fix. Learn how to test the toggle and separate stream issues from game FPS drops.

If looping media sources are making Streamlabs Desktop stutter, test the media-file-caching setting in Advanced settings: it can reduce repeated decoding work by keeping decoded frames in memory. That is a CPU-versus-memory trade-off, not a guaranteed fix. First identify whether the stutter is in the stream or preview, in your game’s frame rate, or in both.

What media-file caching does

Streamlabs describes the feature as caching decoded frames instead of repeatedly decoding them. For a looping media source, such as an MP4, GIF or MP3, the app can read the decoded frames from memory rather than repeatedly using CPU/GPU resources to decode the same data. This may reduce processing work when looping media is active, but it uses memory.

In a June 5, 2019 article, last updated January 28, 2022, Streamlabs author Eddy Gharbi reported: “From our internal measurements, we see a CPU usage reduction of more than 35%, but this comes at a small cost: memory.” That is a vendor-reported internal measurement, not an independent benchmark or a result every computer should expect. The same article describes a 2GB cache limit and says Streamlabs reduces its cache use when other applications create memory pressure.

Before changing the setting, identify the stutter

  • Stream or preview stutters, but the game runs smoothly: focus first on the output workload, including whether a looping media source is active.
  • Game FPS drops, but the stream looks smooth: investigate game performance and GPU load; media caching may not address the problem.
  • Both stutter: more than one bottleneck may be involved. Test one change at a time so you can tell whether the symptom responds.

Note the scene, media sources, game activity and other workload when the issue occurs. Use the same conditions for the comparison; otherwise, a change in the scene or workload can make the result hard to interpret.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Test media-file caching safely

  1. Record the current behavior. Reproduce the stutter with the scene and workload you normally use. Note whether it affects the stream/preview, game FPS or both.
  2. Find the setting. Open Streamlabs Desktop’s Advanced settings and locate the media-file-caching toggle. Streamlabs’ available article identifies Advanced settings but does not establish a version-specific menu path or exact current label. If you cannot find it, check the current app’s settings or Streamlabs support rather than guessing at a different control.
  3. Change only that toggle. Turn media-file caching off for the test. Restart only if the app prompts you to do so.
  4. Repeat the same scene and workload. Compare the same symptom under as similar conditions as possible. Look for a consistent change, not a single momentary improvement.
  5. Restore the earlier setting if needed. If disabling caching makes CPU performance worse or makes no meaningful difference, put it back as it was. The comparison can suggest whether caching is related to the symptom, but it cannot diagnose the cause by itself.

Check system load and capacity

Streamlabs’ system requirements page, last updated April 8, 2026, lists 8GB RAM as a minimum and recommends 16GB or more for more demanding streaming setups. It also recommends a 512GB-or-larger SSD. These are broad system requirements, not proof that a particular stutter is caused by insufficient RAM or storage. Check actual memory use and app/system load before considering an upgrade. If diagnostics point to memory pressure and your computer is below the recommended capacity, verify motherboard or laptop compatibility before buying a compatible RAM upgrade.

Upload a diagnostic report if the test is inconclusive

If stuttering continues or the caching comparison does not clarify the cause, Streamlabs provides a diagnostic report option at Settings > Get Support > Upload Diagnostic Report. Streamlabs says the report collects app state, error messages, stream settings, scenes and sources, along with computer details such as CPU, memory, GPU and driver information. It can give support more useful context than repeatedly changing settings without a clear result.

If game FPS also drops

For game-performance symptoms, Streamlabs’ separate troubleshooting guide suggests disabling third-party in-game overlays and reducing GPU frame output with sync or frame-cap options, or lowering in-game graphics settings. These are adjacent checks for game FPS drops, not media-caching-specific fixes. Some guidance in that article refers to Windows 10, so confirm that a step applies to your current operating system and game before using it.

Avoid clearing cache as a casual first fix

Do not confuse the media-file-caching toggle with clearing Streamlabs’ application cache. Streamlabs’ getting-started guidance says clearing cache resets user data; its going-live troubleshooting guidance warns that scene collections or settings may be lost and advises contacting support first. Do not use a cache-clearing procedure as a routine stutter test, and back up or seek support before taking steps that may reset configuration.

Or let it run in the cloud

Media-file caching is a Streamlabs Desktop setting; it does not solve every stutter or remove the need to diagnose a gaming PC. If your separate goal is to keep uploaded videos running as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a different workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and includes a first day free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
