ServerDescription is the property that supplies the text shown for your server in the 7 Days to Die server browser. The XML element must remain intact; you normally edit only the quoted text after value=.
A typical unformatted entry looks like this:

<property name="ServerDescription" value="[FF0000]Welcome[-] to my server"/>The official wiki describes the value as the server-browser description and instructs administrators to change the value field while leaving the property itself in place. If your host uses a web panel instead of direct file access, the panel is editing this same setting for you.
How the bracket color syntax works
The color code is six hexadecimal characters enclosed in square brackets. The characters represent a red, green and blue value in the usual RRGGBB order. The documented example [FF0000] starts a red span.

[-]. This restores the browser’s default description color. - Leave ordinary text uncolored: place it before a color code or after the reset code.
For example:
<property name="ServerDescription" value="Official [FF0000]Welcome[-] — cooperative survival"/>Here, only “Welcome” is intended to use the selected color. The reset marker is important when more text follows; without it, later characters may continue using the active color in clients that honor the formatting.
The available references explain the bracket notation but do not publish a complete official color palette, a supported-color count, or a guaranteed description-length limit. Treat the hexadecimal value as formatting to test in the actual browser rather than assuming every client renders every shade identically.

Before you edit: protect the configuration
- Stop the server. Editing while the process is running can be overwritten when the server saves its settings or shuts down.
- Identify your access method. A self-managed installation uses the
serverconfig.xmlfile; managed hosts commonly provide a configuration page that writes the same property. - Make a backup. Save a copy of the current file, or copy the existing description somewhere safe, so you can restore it if the XML becomes invalid or the listing does not display as expected.
- Use plain text editing. A code or plain-text editor preserves the XML characters. Do not paste rich-text formatting into the value.
- Preserve the surrounding element. Change the text inside
value="..."; do not remove thepropertyelement or alter unrelated settings.
Method 1: edit serverconfig.xml on a self-managed server
- Stop the dedicated server completely and wait until it is no longer running.
- Open the server’s
serverconfig.xmlin a plain-text editor. - Search for the line containing
name="ServerDescription". It normally resembles:<property name="ServerDescription" value="..."/> - Replace only the existing value between the quotation marks. For a red greeting, use:
<property name="ServerDescription" value="[FF0000]Welcome[-] to my server"/> - Save the file without changing the element’s opening, closing, quotation marks or self-closing slash.
- Start the server again.
- Open the game’s server browser and locate your listing. Allow for the listing to refresh, then check that the intended words are colored and the remaining text has returned to the default color.
If the file contains an existing description, keep any text you want and insert the color code at the point where the colored run should begin. For example, change:

- Open Config, then choose Game Settings.
- Navigate to the setting whose XML name is
ServerDescription. - Edit the quoted text next to
value=, inserting the bracketed color code and reset marker. For example, set the value to[FF0000]Welcome[-] to my server. - Save the configuration.
- Start the server and inspect the listing in the server browser.
This panel workflow is documented by BisectHosting in a guide updated July 6, 2026. The important distinction from direct editing is access: the panel handles the file for you, but the setting and formatting syntax remain the same.

A colored heading followed by rules
<property name="ServerDescription" value="[FF0000]WELCOME[-] to our cooperative server. Rules: be respectful, build together, and ask before taking supplies."/>The reset marker keeps the rules in the normal color. Keep punctuation and spacing inside the quoted value, and avoid adding a second pair of quotation marks around the description.
Multiple colored runs
<property name="ServerDescription" value="[FF0000]PVP EVENT[-] every weekend. [FF0000]READ RULES[-] before joining."/>Each new colored run starts with its own bracketed code. Each run should be closed with [-] before ordinary text resumes.
Reported line breaks
<property name="ServerDescription" value="[FF0000]Welcome[-] to my server nnRule 1: Be Respectful nnRule 2: No PVP"/>A Steam community post demonstrating version 2.0 reported that nn produced blank lines, that the Welcome text appeared red, and that the resulting lines were automatically centered. That is a community observation, not a complete official formatting specification. Use it as an experiment: verify the display in the current game client and remove the escapes if your listing shows the characters literally or otherwise renders incorrectly.
The same community post cautioned that Unicode symbols can be hit or miss. Plain letters, numbers and punctuation are the safer choice when the description must be readable on every client.

Choosing a readable color
The server browser’s background, UI theme and client version affect how a shade appears. Since no official palette is published, choose a color by contrast rather than by assuming a particular name such as “bright red” will look identical everywhere.
- Use a short colored heading or warning instead of coloring the entire description.
- Place the reset code immediately after the important word or phrase.
- Check the listing with the same client version your players use.
- Ask another player to confirm readability if the server serves a mixed group of displays or graphics settings.
- Avoid relying on color alone for rules; include the words that convey the rule in ordinary text as well.
A color that looks clear in the editor may blend into the browser background. The definitive check is the rendered server listing after the restart.

Troubleshooting when the color does not appear

Common mistakes to avoid
Using HTML color tags
7 Days to Die server descriptions do not use browser HTML for this formatting. In a Fun Pimps forum discussion, a user reported that an HTML attempt made the description blank. Community Moderator Umbionis directed users to bracket syntax instead and explained that the color goes inside brackets while [-] ends it.
Deleting or renaming the property
Do not replace ServerDescription with a differently named setting, and do not delete the element while trying to “clear” the old text. The wiki instruction is to change the value field. If you want no description, use the configuration format supplied by your server version rather than removing XML by guesswork.

Editing without a restart
A saved file is not necessarily a live server setting. The documented workflow is stop, edit, save, start, then check the browser. Skipping the restart makes it difficult to tell whether a syntax problem exists or the running process simply has the previous value.
Assuming a guaranteed character limit or palette
The available references do not establish an official maximum length or a complete list of supported colors. Keep the message concise for scanability, but do not present an unverified number as a hard limit. Test the final wording and color in the browser used by your players.

A safe editing checklist
- The server is stopped before the change.
- You are editing the active
serverconfig.xmlor the panel’sServerDescriptionfield. - The property name remains exactly

What is officially established and what is version-dependent
The stable, documented part is the setting name and the bracket color notation: ServerDescription supplies the browser text, a six-digit bracketed value starts color, and [-] ends it. The official wiki and the Fun Pimps forum guidance support editing the value rather than inserting HTML.
Formatting beyond that core behavior needs more caution. A Steam community v2.0 example reported that doubled newline escapes created separate, centered lines, while also warning that Unicode symbols could be unreliable. Those details may vary by game version or client, so confirm them on the server you operate instead of promising identical results to every player.
