How to Add Controller Support to Minecraft Java Edition

Minecraft Java Edition needs a controller mod or input mapper. This guide covers Controlify, MidnightControls, Forge and NeoForge options, Steam Input, controller pairing, dependencies, and troubleshooting.

Minecraft: Java Edition has no built-in controller support. To play Java with a gamepad, install a client-side controller mod—Controlify is the best first choice for most new Fabric or NeoForge setups—or use an input mapper such as Steam Input. Bedrock Edition includes native controller support, but Java players must add one of these solutions themselves. Minecraft’s official Java and Bedrock comparison explains the edition difference.

Before downloading anything, match three details exactly: your Minecraft version, your mod loader, and the controller-mod file. A Fabric mod will not work in a NeoForge or Forge instance, and a mod built for one Minecraft version may fail on another.

Best method: install Controlify

For a new or recently updated modded installation, Controlify is the most complete option to try first. Its current public version listing includes Minecraft 1.19.4, 1.20.x, 1.21.x, 26.1.x, and 26.2 on Fabric and NeoForge, although support changes as Minecraft releases change. Check the project’s current version list rather than relying on an old tutorial.

Controlify adds more than simple button remapping. The project advertises controller vibration, gyroscope input, controller-specific button glyphs, on-screen keyboard input, radial menus, modded-GUI navigation, Steam Deck support, DualSense and DualShock support, and other SDL3-supported devices. See the project’s official repository for current details.

What you need

  • Minecraft: Java Edition
  • A supported Minecraft release
  • A compatible mod loader, such as Fabric or NeoForge
  • The matching Controlify file
  • Controlify’s required dependencies, including the matching Fabric API and YetAnotherConfigLib (YACL) files when using Fabric
  • A controller recognized by your operating system

Controlify is intended to work client-side for ordinary local controller input. Its public metadata can also list client-and-server environments for particular releases, so follow the dependency information for the exact file if a modpack or multiplayer setup reports an additional requirement.

Install Controlify on Fabric

  1. Choose the Minecraft version first. Create or select an instance using the exact release you intend to play. For a stable setup, use an official release rather than a snapshot or pre-release unless you specifically want to test unfinished software. Mojang’s release documentation distinguishes released versions from testing builds.
  2. Install Fabric Loader for that same version. The Fabric installation guide explains how to run the installer and create a launcher profile. Select the Fabric profile or the corresponding Fabric instance in your launcher when starting the game.
  3. Install Fabric API. Download the Fabric API file that matches both your Minecraft version and loader.
  4. Install Controlify. Use the Fabric file for the exact Minecraft version—not a similarly named file for a neighboring release.
  5. Install YetAnotherConfigLib (YACL). Controlify’s dependency metadata identifies YACL and Fabric API as required dependencies for the relevant Fabric files. Use the dependency versions shown on the exact file page. Controlify’s dependency page is a useful cross-check. Mod Menu is optional.
  6. Launch the instance. If the game reaches the title screen, open Options > Controls > Controller Settings.
  7. Calibrate the controller. Run calibration, then adjust dead zones, sensitivity, button prompts, vibration, and any other preferences available in your version. Prism Launcher documents this Controlify setup path.

Put mods in the instance’s mods folder, not in a separate global folder unless your launcher specifically manages instances that way. Fabric’s official player documentation recommends verifying the Minecraft version, loader, and Java Edition before copying a mod into that folder.

Test more than movement

Do not stop after confirming that the character can walk. Test the title screen, a temporary world, camera movement, inventory screens, pause menus, crafting interfaces, and the modded screens you actually use. Controller navigation can work in the world while remaining incomplete or incorrectly mapped in a particular mod’s GUI.

MidnightControls: a strong alternative

MidnightControls is worth considering if you already use Fabric, Quilt, or a supported NeoForge installation, or if you prefer its custom mapping workflow. The project provides controller and touchscreen support, on-screen button indicators, keyboard-look controls, Bedrock-style features, and custom mappings. It lists support for DualShock, DualSense, Xbox controllers, Switch Pro controllers, Joy-Cons, Steam Controller, and Steam Deck. Check the current MidnightControls project page for loader and version compatibility.

After installing it, open the in-game controls menu and inspect the Mode setting. Some installations need to be switched to Controller before gamepad input is accepted. If the controller appears with an orange name or responds incorrectly, use MidnightControls’ mapping editor to create or paste a custom mapping. The exact menu labels can vary by Minecraft and mod version.

Options by mod loader

Loader Recommended starting point Important qualification
Fabric Controlify Install matching Fabric API and YACL files. MidnightControls is another good option.
Quilt MidnightControls, if the exact release supports your setup Verify the project’s current loader and Minecraft-version files before installing.
NeoForge Controlify for Minecraft 1.20.3 and newer; MidnightControls for supported 1.21-and-newer setups Confirm the exact NeoForge-compatible file. NeoForge’s client installation documentation covers creating the client profile.
Forge Controllable The maintainer’s README currently describes support for 1.20.1 and newer, while broader launcher documentation lists older Forge versions. Inspect the actual file before using it with an older pack.

Forge: Controllable

Prism Launcher’s controller guide lists Controllable for Forge, and its maintainer describes Xbox, PlayStation, and other controller support, analog movement, radial menus, button mappings, SDL2 input handling, and broad mod compatibility. The safe rule is to trust the version files and README for your specific pack rather than assuming that a current mod works with every historical Forge release.

Connect a controller to your PC

An Xbox Wireless Controller is a straightforward choice for Windows because Microsoft documents three connection methods: Bluetooth, a compatible USB-C cable, or the Xbox Wireless Adapter. The controller is not required—DualSense, DualShock, Switch Pro, Joy-Con, Steam Deck controls, and many generic gamepads can also work—but support depends on the mod, operating system, Minecraft version, and mapping layer.

Disclosure: If you buy through a retailer link on this site, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The controller does not add native Java support; you still need Controlify, MidnightControls, Controllable, or an input mapper. If you are buying a gamepad specifically for PC play, an Xbox Wireless Controller is the simplest hardware starting point because its Windows connection options are documented by Microsoft/Xbox.

Bluetooth pairing in Windows

  1. Put the controller into Bluetooth pairing mode.
  2. In Windows, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device.
  3. Select Bluetooth, then choose the controller when it appears.
  4. Start Minecraft only after Windows reports that the device is connected.

Microsoft explains this process in its Bluetooth pairing instructions. If the PC has no built-in Bluetooth, a USB Bluetooth adapter for PC can add it. An Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows is a separate, dedicated receiver option for compatible Xbox controllers; neither accessory is mandatory if a wired USB connection works.

Wired connection

A compatible USB-C data cable can be the quickest way to test whether the controller and Windows recognize each other. Some inexpensive cables provide charging only and do not carry data, so use a cable appropriate for PC data connections. The required connector and behavior depend on the controller model.

No-mod fallback: Steam Input

If you cannot install mods or want to leave the Minecraft instance untouched, Steam Input can translate controller actions into keyboard keys, mouse movement, and clicks. Steam’s official help page documents adding a non-Steam game or application by browsing to its executable and using Steam’s controller configuration tools.

  1. Open Steam and choose Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library.
  2. Browse to the Java launcher or the executable you want Steam to start.
  3. Add it to the library, open its controller configuration, and assign gamepad buttons to keyboard and mouse actions.
  4. Launch Minecraft through Steam and test the mapping.

This approach is useful, but it is not equivalent to native controller integration. Java still does not know that a controller is present, controller glyphs may not match your hardware, and menus, inventory, chat, and mouse-driven interfaces can be awkward. Overlay behavior and launcher compatibility also vary. If you regularly play modded Java, a controller mod is usually the more complete solution because it can add controller-oriented GUI behavior instead of merely pretending that the controller is a keyboard and mouse.

Troubleshooting Minecraft Java controller support

The game does not start after installing the mod

  1. Confirm that the instance is Java Edition.
  2. Write down the exact Minecraft version and loader shown by the launcher.
  3. Check that Controlify, Fabric API, YACL, or MidnightControls all match that version and loader.
  4. Remove duplicate, outdated, or mismatched dependency files.
  5. Test a clean instance containing only the loader, required libraries, and one controller mod. Add the rest of the modpack back gradually to identify a conflict.

A Fabric JAR cannot be repaired by placing it in a NeoForge or Forge instance. Likewise, changing only the name of a JAR does not make it compatible.

The game starts, but the controller does nothing

  • Check that Windows or your operating system sees the controller before launching Minecraft.
  • In Controlify, open Options > Controls > Controller Settings and run calibration.
  • In MidnightControls, check the Mode setting and select Controller if necessary.
  • Use the mod’s mapping editor if the device is detected but its buttons are wrong.
  • Temporarily disable Steam Input or close other controller-remapping software and test one input path at a time.
  • Try USB instead of Bluetooth to separate a connection problem from a Minecraft configuration problem.

Windows cannot find or pair the controller

Check pairing mode, battery level, distance from the PC, and whether the controller works over USB. Microsoft recommends removing and re-adding the Bluetooth device, restarting Bluetooth, checking Windows Update, and updating the Bluetooth adapter driver. Its Bluetooth troubleshooting guide and driver-update guide should be the first references.

Prefer Windows Update and the PC, motherboard, or Bluetooth-adapter manufacturer’s driver page. As an optional last resort for a genuine missing, outdated, corrupted, or unstable Windows input/Bluetooth driver, Outbyte Driver Updater is a possible troubleshooting utility that advertises scanning, official-driver recommendations, and backup/restore features. It is not required to install Minecraft controller support, and Microsoft’s free troubleshooting and manufacturer drivers should come first.

Buttons or prompts are wrong

Wrong prompts usually indicate a mapping issue rather than a failed controller. Recalibrate Controlify, inspect the selected controller profile, or create a custom MidnightControls mapping. Also check whether Steam Input, the controller manufacturer’s software, and the Minecraft mod are all trying to remap the same physical device.

The controller works in the world but not in menus

Some input methods only translate buttons into keyboard and mouse events. Test the mod’s GUI-navigation settings and controller mode. A controller mod with menu support is generally preferable to Steam Input for inventory, crafting, chat, and modded interfaces, but compatibility with every third-party screen is not guaranteed.

Version safety and download sources

Minecraft’s version naming changed to calendar-style versions in 2026, and controller mods can lag behind a new Java release. The current Controlify listing includes 1.19.4, 1.20.x, 1.21.x, 26.1.x, and 26.2, but that does not mean every combination of loader, modpack, and dependency is interchangeable. Select the exact file matching your installation and recheck dependencies after a Minecraft update.

Download mods from the project’s official page, Modrinth, CurseForge, or loader documentation. Do not use random JAR files from unofficial mirrors. If a file page does not clearly identify the Minecraft version and loader, do not install it in a valuable world or modpack.

Quick decision guide

  • Starting a modern Fabric or NeoForge instance: use Controlify.
  • Already using Fabric, Quilt, or a compatible NeoForge pack and want custom mappings: consider MidnightControls.
  • Using Forge: check Controllable’s exact supported file, especially for older packs.
  • Cannot modify the instance: add Minecraft to Steam as a non-Steam game and use Steam Input.
  • Choosing hardware: an Xbox Wireless Controller is a straightforward Windows option, but other supported SDL or mapped controllers can work.
  • Controller not detected by Windows: solve the Bluetooth, USB, battery, pairing, or driver problem before changing Minecraft mods.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Minecraft Java Edition support controllers natively?

No. Java Edition does not currently include native controller support. Install a controller mod such as Controlify, MidnightControls, or Controllable for the appropriate loader, or use an input-mapping layer such as Steam Input.

Which controller mod is best for Minecraft Java?

Controlify is the best first choice for most new Fabric and NeoForge setups because it supports controller-focused menus, calibration, vibration, glyphs, radial menus, and several controller families. MidnightControls is a strong alternative when its custom mapping workflow or loader support better fits your instance.

Can I use a controller without installing a Minecraft mod?

Yes. Steam Input can map controller buttons to keyboard keys, mouse movement, and clicks after you add the Minecraft launcher or executable as a non-Steam game. It is less seamless than a controller mod, particularly for menus, inventory, chat, and controller prompts.

Will a controller work with every Minecraft Java modpack?

Not automatically. The controller mod must match the pack’s Minecraft version and loader, and modded screens may have varying GUI compatibility. Test the controller in the world, inventory, menus, and the specific modded interfaces you use.

Why does Controlify need Fabric API and YACL?

The relevant Controlify Fabric files identify Fabric API and YetAnotherConfigLib as required dependencies. Download the dependency versions shown for the exact Minecraft version instead of copying versions from an older guide.

The Bottom Line

For most players, the dependable route is: connect a controller to Windows, create a Fabric or NeoForge instance for the exact Minecraft release, install the matching Controlify file and dependencies, then calibrate it at Options > Controls > Controller Settings. Use MidnightControls or Controllable when your loader or mapping needs point elsewhere, and reserve Steam Input for setups where installing a client mod is not practical.
