What a custom campaign needs
A Left 4 Dead 2 dedicated server loads community campaigns as add-ons. The server-side installation is a VPK file in the game directory, while each player needs the same campaign available in their own client installation. These are separate requirements. A server can have the VPK and still disconnect a player whose client lacks the map, and a player can subscribe to a Workshop item while the server remains unable to load it because the server copy is missing.

- Campaign package: The campaign’s
.vpk, obtained by subscribing to its Workshop item or downloading it from a trusted source. - Server copy: The VPK copied to
<server root>/left4dead2/addons/. - Client copies: Every player subscribes to or otherwise installs the same campaign.
- Correct map name: The internal BSP name used by the campaign, not the display title shown in the Workshop.
- Network mode:
sv_lan 1for a LAN server orsv_lan 0for Steam-network play.
Metamod:Source and SourceMod are optional. They are useful for plugin-based administration, but a VPK campaign does not inherently require either framework.
Choose where the server will run
Local or self-managed server
A local machine gives you direct access to the SRCDS files, console and configuration. It is the simplest option for testing a campaign because you can copy, replace or remove a VPK immediately. You are responsible for keeping the process running, opening or forwarding the chosen network port when necessary, and giving players the correct address.

Managed hosting
A managed host can keep the process online, but custom campaigns depend on file and configuration access. Before selecting a host, confirm that you can upload a VPK to left4dead2/addons/, edit launch arguments or configuration files, access the server console or RCON, and change maps. Also confirm that custom VPK campaigns are permitted. A host that only exposes official map controls may not support this workflow.
Official versus community servers
Community guidance generally treats Valve Official Dedicated servers as intended for the official map suite, while custom campaigns are run on local or third-party community servers. Treat that as operational guidance rather than a permanent statement of Valve policy: the practical test is whether you control the server’s add-on files and launch configuration. If you cannot place the VPK on the instance, use a server you control instead.
Install the dedicated server
Install Left 4 Dead 2 Dedicated Server with Steam or SteamCMD. The resulting server root is the directory containing the SRCDS launcher and the left4dead2 game folder. Do not copy the VPK into a client-only Workshop cache and assume SRCDS will discover it; the dedicated instance needs its own file under the server’s game directory.
Metamod:Source and SourceMod can be added later if you need plugin commands or an admin layer. Installing them is not a prerequisite for loading a campaign. Every extra framework creates another compatibility surface, so start with the base server when diagnosing a map-loading problem.
Get the campaign package
Workshop subscription
Subscribe to the campaign item in the game client and identify the resulting VPK. Workshop presentation names can differ from the internal campaign and map names. Keep the package’s mission file information available; you will need the first map’s BSP name when launching the server.
Manual VPK download
If the author distributes a VPK directly, download it from a trusted source and keep the original filename until the server has loaded it successfully. Avoid unpacking the VPK into an arbitrary folder unless the campaign’s instructions explicitly require it. For the standard add-on layout, the VPK itself belongs in the server’s addons directory.

Use one campaign package consistently while testing. If you replace a file with a different revision under the same name, remove the old copy first so you know which package the server is loading.
Put the VPK on the server
- Stop the dedicated server process if it is running.
- Open the server root and then open
left4dead2/addons/. - Copy the campaign’s
.vpkfile into that directory. The final path should look like<server root>/left4dead2/addons/campaign_file.vpk. - Check that the account running SRCDS can read the file.
- Start the server and inspect the console for add-on or map-loading errors.
The server-side VPK is mandatory. Subscribing to a Workshop item on an administrator’s gaming PC does not install the add-on for a separate dedicated server machine.
Install the same campaign for every player
Have each player subscribe to the same Workshop item or install the same VPK before joining. The cited troubleshooting experience for custom campaigns specifically required clients to download the map as well as the server. A player who lacks the content may be disconnected or fail when the campaign attempts to load.
- Give players the exact campaign name and, for a manual install, the exact VPK package.
- Ask them to finish the download before joining the lobby or connecting directly.
- If one player disconnects while others load successfully, verify that player’s client content before changing server networking settings.
- When replacing a campaign revision, have every player update to the same revision.
Server and client content should be treated as a matched set. Solving only the server installation does not solve missing client content.

Find the real map and mission names
SRCDS map commands require the internal BSP name. The Workshop display title, campaign title, and first chapter title are not guaranteed to be the same string. Inspect the campaign’s mission files and the server console to find the playable map names. Use the first map’s actual name in +map at startup and in later map commands.
For example, custom_map_first_stage below is only an illustrative placeholder for a real BSP name supplied by the campaign; it is not a universal map. If the campaign’s mission file lists a different name, use that exact name instead.

Start SRCDS on the custom map
Valve’s SRCDS launch controls include +map, -port, +maxplayers, +hostname and +sv_lan. Adapt the executable path, port, server name and map name to your installation.

Let the server finish loading before testing a connection. If SRCDS reports that the map cannot be found, stop and correct the map name or VPK placement rather than repeatedly retrying the same command.
Change to a custom map after startup
Once the server is running, change maps from the server console with the map command. If RCON is configured, an administrator can issue the same operation remotely:
rcon map <actual_bsp_name>With SourceMod installed, an administrator can use:
sm_map <actual_bsp_name>Replace <actual_bsp_name> with the map name listed by the campaign’s mission data. SourceMod is not required for the ordinary console or RCON path; it only provides an additional administrative interface.

Direct players to the server
Direct connection
A player can open the game console and run:
connect <ip[:port]>Include the port when the server is using a non-default port or when you want to remove ambiguity. The address must point to the instance that actually contains the requested campaign.
Steer a lobby to the server
To direct a lobby toward a particular dedicated server, use:
mm_dedicated_force_servers <ip[:port]>The selected server still needs to have the map loaded or available. This setting does not transfer a VPK to the server and does not install the campaign for players.
Save repeatable settings
For a server or client setup you use repeatedly, store appropriate aliases or settings in autoexec.cfg. Keep addresses and map names current; an alias pointing at an old port or an instance without the VPK will produce a connection or map-loading failure that looks unrelated to the command itself.
Choose an administration method

Use the simplest layer that meets your needs. A custom campaign does not become more compatible merely because an administration plugin is installed.

LAN
Set +sv_lan 1 when all players are on the same local network and you do not need Steam-network discovery. Tell players the server’s local IP and port. A local-only setup avoids public routing concerns but is not intended for players outside that network.

Public Steam play
Set +sv_lan 0 for Steam-network play and give players the reachable public address and port. Networking configuration cannot compensate for a missing VPK or an incorrect map name. Verify content and map loading first, then investigate reachability if players still cannot connect.
Valve’s networking reference places Left 4 Dead 2 on the 30-tick Source branch and documents Steam networking controls. That fact does not establish a particular performance result for your custom campaign, hardware or connection, so do not promise a different tickrate or a benchmark without testing the specific setup.
Troubleshoot the common failures
The server starts, but the campaign is not available
- Confirm the VPK is directly under
left4dead2/addons/, not one directory deeper. - Confirm you copied the file to the dedicated server machine rather than only subscribing on a client.
- Restart SRCDS after copying or replacing the package.
- Read the server console for add-on loading errors.
+map or map says the map is missing
- Use the BSP name from the campaign’s mission files, not its Workshop title.
- Check spelling, punctuation and the first map’s exact name.
- Confirm the VPK is readable by the account running the server.
- Make sure the command is being sent to the intended Left 4 Dead 2 instance.
A player is disconnected while changing campaigns
- Verify that player’s client has subscribed to or installed the same campaign.
- Check whether the server and client have different campaign revisions.
- Only after content matches should you investigate address, port or Steam-network reachability.
Players connect to the wrong server
- Check the address and port in
connectormm_dedicated_force_servers. - Confirm the requested map is loaded on that instance.
- If multiple servers share a machine, verify each launch command uses the intended port and game directory.
SourceMod commands do not work
Use the console or RCON path to prove that the VPK and map are valid. Then verify that Metamod:Source and SourceMod are installed and loaded correctly. Their absence should not prevent ordinary VPK loading, so a failed sm_map command is an administration-layer problem rather than evidence that the campaign itself is invalid.
Update, replace or remove a campaign safely
- Stop the server before changing the VPK.
- Record which campaign revision you are using and tell players to update to the same revision.
- Remove the obsolete VPK if the replacement uses a different file or package.
- Copy the replacement into
left4dead2/addons/. - Start SRCDS on the correct first-map BSP name and watch the console for errors.
- Have one client join before inviting the full group.
To remove a campaign, stop the server and delete its VPK from the server’s addons directory. Players may still have the Workshop item installed locally, but the campaign will not be available from that server once its server-side package is removed.

These choices do not have a universal price, uptime or capacity advantage established here. Select the arrangement based on the access and control your group needs, not on an assumed benchmark.

- Dedicated Server is installed and the server root is known.
- The campaign VPK is in
<server root>/left4dead2/addons/. - The campaign’s internal first-map BSP name has been identified.
- Every player has the same campaign installed.
- The launch command uses
-game left4dead2, a chosen port, the intendedsv_lanvalue and the real+mapname. - Any required port reachability has been arranged for the intended players.
- Console, RCON or SourceMod administration has been tested with the simplest available method.
After those checks pass, start the server, watch the console through map loading, and test with one client. A successful test demonstrates all three essential links in the chain: SRCDS can read the VPK, the command names a real map, and the client has the matching content.
