Installing a custom Killing Floor 2 map and adding it to the server’s playable cycle are separate jobs. Subscribe or install the map, register it, place its internal KF-... name in GameMapCycles, enable bUseMapList=true, then restart and verify the entry in WebAdmin and the in-game vote list. The numeric Steam Workshop ID normally does not belong in the cycle setting.
What actually makes a custom map playable
Killing Floor 2 uses two related but different pieces of configuration:

- Registration or installation: the dedicated server downloads the Workshop item or receives the map through another installation method.
- Map-cycle membership: the server’s configured rotation contains the map’s internal name, so it can be selected or offered for voting.
A Workshop download does not automatically perform the second step. Nodecraft’s guidance says downloading a custom map does not immediately add it to the map cycle, and PineRiver states that a Workshop map can only be played once it is registered. If the download succeeds but players cannot vote for the map, treat registration and cycle configuration as two separate checks rather than assuming the download failed.
For most installations, the value added to the cycle looks like KF-CustomMap. The long numeric Workshop item ID identifies the download, not the map name expected by GameMapCycles.

Before you edit anything
Confirm that the map is installed or subscribed
Use the server’s normal Workshop subscription process for a Workshop map, or install the files through the method supplied by your server provider for a manually installed or redirected map. Wait for that process to complete before editing the cycle. A cycle entry pointing to a map the server has not registered cannot make the map playable.
Find the internal map name
You need the map’s game-facing name, normally beginning with KF-, such as KF-CustomMap. Do not substitute the numeric Workshop ID. If the provider’s map list or WebAdmin already displays the installed map, copy the displayed internal name exactly. This is especially important when a map’s title shown on the Workshop page differs from its internal name.

Keep a copy of the existing configuration before changing it. This gives you a known-good version to restore if a typo in quotes, commas, parentheses, or a section name prevents the cycle from loading. Stop the server before making the edit; changing a live configuration can leave you unsure which version was read at startup.
Method 1: edit the server INI file
1. Stop the dedicated server
Use the provider panel or your normal server-control method to stop the instance completely. Do not edit while it is running if the panel may rewrite configuration during shutdown or startup.
2. Open the correct configuration file
The exact filename depends on the server platform and provider workflow:

Providers can expose these files through different panels, so the visible folder tree may vary. The important distinction is the Linux filename versus the commonly used Windows-style PCServer-KFGame.ini workflow.

3. Add the internal name to GameMapCycles
Find the existing GameMapCycles entry and add the map inside the quoted list. Preserve the configuration’s existing parentheses, quotation marks, and commas. A minimal example is:
GameMapCycles=(Maps=("KF-BioticsLab","KF-CustomMap"))In this example, KF-CustomMap is the internal map name. If the file already contains several maps, add another quoted value using the same punctuation pattern. Avoid changing unrelated options while you work; a small, isolated edit is easier to validate.
4. Use the exact spelling expected by the server
Check every character, including the KF- prefix, hyphens, and capitalization. Pingperfect reports that redirect-map names are case-sensitive, while Workshop map names are not case-sensitive. Because installations differ, matching the name displayed by the server or WebAdmin is the safest approach even when a Workshop map would tolerate different capitalization.
5. Activate the configured list
Set:
bUseMapList=trueThis tells the server to use the configured map list. If your configuration exposes ActiveMapCycle, make sure the intended cycle is selected. Kinetic documents 0 as off and 1 as active. A correctly formatted GameMapCycles entry can still appear to do nothing if the list is disabled or a different cycle is active.

6. Add a map-summary section when the build requires it
Some server configurations also need a matching data-store section for the custom map. The documented pattern is:

MapName=KF-CustomMap4Netplayers and Pingperfect document this KFMapSummary pattern. Replace both occurrences with the same internal map name. Do not add a section for a different spelling, because the section header and MapName value are intended to identify the same map. If the map is installed and listed in GameMapCycles but remains unavailable after a restart, this metadata section is one of the first configuration differences to check.

7. Save, restart, and test
Save the file, start the server, and allow it to finish loading. Then check the Map Cycles tab in WebAdmin and open the in-game map-vote list. The map should be present in the active cycle and available for selection. If it is absent from both places, return to registration and spelling checks before changing unrelated server settings.
Method 2: add the map through WebAdmin
WebAdmin provides a graphical alternative after the map has already been installed and registered. It changes the same operational result without requiring you to hand-edit the INI syntax.

- Open WebAdmin and select the Map Cycles tab.
- Locate the installed custom map by its internal name.
- Add it to the intended active cycle.
- Save the cycle, restart the server if the panel requests it, and verify the in-game vote list.
WebAdmin is not a substitute for installation. If the map has only been downloaded but not registered, it may not appear as an available map to add. In that case, complete the server’s Workshop or manual registration process first, then return to Map Cycles.

Whichever surface you use, verify the result after a restart. The decisive test is not merely that the map appears in a file or panel; it must be available in the active cycle and in the game’s voting interface.
Why the Workshop ID is usually the wrong value
The Workshop ID is a numeric identifier for the item being downloaded. GameMapCycles expects the map’s internal game name, normally a string beginning with KF-. Therefore, an entry such as "123456789" is not equivalent to "KF-CustomMap" and should not be used as a replacement for it.
This distinction explains a common failure pattern: the server successfully subscribes to an item, but the map never appears in voting. The subscription proves that the download step worked; it does not prove that the internal name was registered in the active cycle.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The map downloads but is missing from voting
- Confirm that the server has registered the map, not merely downloaded it.
- Find the internal
KF-...name. - Add that name to
GameMapCycles; do not add the numeric Workshop ID. - Check that
bUseMapList=trueand that the intendedActiveMapCycleis set to1when that option is present. - Restart and check both WebAdmin’s Map Cycles tab and the in-game vote list.
Nodecraft and PineRiver both distinguish downloading from registration or cycle availability, so a successful download alone is not evidence that the map is ready to vote on.
The server fails to load the cycle
Inspect the edited line character by character. Kinetic warns that malformed formatting can prevent the cycle from loading. Check that:
- Each map name is inside quotation marks.
- Entries are separated by commas.
- The nested parentheses are balanced.
- The
GameMapCycleskey is spelled exactly as expected. - You did not accidentally remove an existing map while adding the new one.
If the server still will not load the list, restore the saved copy, confirm the server starts normally, and reapply one small change at a time.

Check whether your server build requires the matching summary section:
[KF-CustomMap KFMapSummary]
MapName=KF-CustomMapThe section header and MapName must use the same internal name that appears in GameMapCycles. This requirement is configuration-dependent; some installations expose the map without it, while others document it as necessary.
A redirect or manually installed map cannot be found
Verify the exact case and spelling. Pingperfect reports case sensitivity for redirect-map names. Compare the name in the provider’s map listing, the cycle entry, the summary section, and any redirect configuration rather than retyping it from memory.

Only some maps in a long rotation work
Count the entries in the active rotation. Kinetic warns that exceeding 519 maps can cause the server to stop functioning correctly. If the list is larger than that, remove unused entries or divide the rotation before investigating individual map names.

Keeping a reliable rotation
Use one canonical spelling
Choose the exact internal name shown by the server and use it consistently in GameMapCycles, KFMapSummary, WebAdmin, and any provider map-list fields. Consistency avoids a situation where the map is installed under one name but referenced under another.
Make changes in small batches
Add one or a few maps, restart, and verify the vote list before importing a very large rotation. Small batches make a syntax error or missing registration easy to isolate. This is particularly useful when a provider panel rewrites the INI after saving.
Keep the active cycle intentional
When more than one cycle is exposed, confirm which one is active rather than assuming the first list in the file is being used. The ActiveMapCycle setting, where present, is documented as 0 for off and 1 for active by Kinetic.
Recheck after provider changes
A provider migration, map reinstallation, or switch between Workshop and manual delivery can change registration state or the configuration file being read. After such a change, verify the platform-specific filename, registration status, active cycle, and WebAdmin result together.

Complete installation checklist
- The server is stopped before configuration edits.
- The custom map is subscribed, manually installed, or otherwise registered on the dedicated server.
- The internal map name begins with the expected
KF-prefix. - The numeric Workshop ID has not been substituted for that internal name.
- The correct file is open:

The practical rule to remember
Think of custom-map setup as a pipeline: install or subscribe, register, add the internal KF-... name to the active cycle, enable the map list, and restart. A Workshop download handles only the first part. The map becomes selectable only when the server recognizes its internal name in the active GameMapCycles configuration, with any required summary metadata present.
