To add GeForce NOW to your Steam Deck, switch to Desktop Mode, open NVIDIA’s official download page, choose the Steam Deck installer, run the setup script, and return to Gaming Mode. The new Steam Library entry lets you sign in, connect supported game stores, and stream supported games without installing them locally.

The current official workflow is different from many older tutorials. NVIDIA now provides a Steam Deck-specific installer intended to create a Gaming Mode library entry, while older guides commonly used a Google Chrome browser shortcut.

Key takeaways

  • The current official method uses NVIDIA’s Steam Deck installer from Desktop Mode and adds GeForce NOW to the Steam Library for Gaming Mode.
  • A GeForce NOW account, a supported game, and a connected supported store account may be required; cloud streaming does not make unsupported PC games playable.
  • NVIDIA recommends wired Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, with latency below 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center.
  • NVIDIA lists 15 Mbps for HD at up to 60 FPS, 25 Mbps for 1080p at up to 60 FPS, 35 Mbps for QHD or ultra-wide QHD at 120 FPS, and 45 Mbps for 4K at 120 FPS.
  • A USB-C dock is optional for handheld play but useful for a TV or monitor, wired Ethernet, external controls, keyboard and mouse, and pass-through charging.

How do you add GeForce NOW to a Steam Deck?

Install GeForce NOW on Steam Deck through Desktop Mode using NVIDIA’s current Steam Deck download. Download and run the installer script, return to Gaming Mode, open the new Steam Library entry, sign in, connect a supported game-store account, and launch a game supported by GeForce NOW.

1. Switch the Steam Deck to Desktop Mode

From Gaming Mode, open the Steam menu, choose Power, and select Switch to Desktop. Valve describes Desktop Mode as a normal-PC environment where Steam Deck users can browse the internet, install applications, and run programs outside Steam; however, software still needs to support SteamOS’s Arch Linux environment. Read Valve’s Steam Deck Desktop Mode guidance if the menu labels differ on your device.

2. Open NVIDIA’s official download page

In Desktop Mode, open a browser on the Steam Deck and visit NVIDIA’s official GeForce NOW download page. NVIDIA specifically directs Steam Deck users to open the download page from the Deck while in Desktop Mode.

3. Select the Steam Deck download

Choose the download identified for Steam Deck. NVIDIA says the Steam Deck installer is a script designed to install the GeForce NOW app into the Steam Library so the app can be opened from Gaming Mode.

4. Extract and run the installer

When the download finishes, use the Desktop Mode file manager to extract the archive if necessary. Open the extracted files and click the setup file to execute the installer, following any on-screen prompts. If the downloaded file does not show the same name or layout described here, use the current instructions on NVIDIA’s download page because installer packaging can change.

5. Return to Gaming Mode and launch the app

After installation completes, return to Gaming Mode. Open the Steam Library and look for the GeForce NOW entry created by NVIDIA’s installer. NVIDIA’s installer documentation states: “This script will install the GeForce NOW app into your Steam Library available in Gaming Mode.”

What do you need before launching a GeForce NOW game?

You need a GeForce NOW account and access to a supported game. Depending on the title, connect the store account that owns the game or use an eligible free-to-play catalog entry. NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW FAQ identifies Steam, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, EA app, GOG, and Xbox among supported connections, but individual game availability varies.

GeForce NOW streams games from NVIDIA’s cloud; GeForce NOW does not install every PC game locally and does not make unsupported titles compatible with SteamOS. A game must be supported by GeForce NOW and associated with a supported account or catalog.

What is the difference between the current Steam Deck app and older Chrome guides?

The current primary setup is NVIDIA’s Steam Deck-specific installer. Older guides may describe a 2024 beta method that installed Google Chrome and created a browser-based GeForce NOW entry with gamepad navigation and automatic Steam Deck configuration.

Setup method Official status in the dossier Gaming Mode integration When it is useful
Steam Deck installer Current official method Installer adds GeForce NOW to the Steam Library New installations
Chrome browser method Documented NVIDIA beta method from May 2024 Uses a browser-based Steam entry and configured gamepad navigation Explaining older guides or troubleshooting when the current installer is unavailable

NVIDIA announced the native Steam Deck app on May 29, 2025, so a tutorial that insists Chrome is required is describing the older workflow or may be outdated. The older browser approach remains relevant mainly when a system cannot use the current installer.

What internet connection does GeForce NOW need on Steam Deck?

NVIDIA recommends wired Ethernet or a router using 5 GHz Wi-Fi and requires latency below 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center. NVIDIA’s current GeForce NOW system requirements list these streaming targets:

Streaming target NVIDIA-listed bandwidth
HD up to 60 FPS 15 Mbps
1080p up to 60 FPS 25 Mbps
Ultra-wide QHD or QHD at 120 FPS 35 Mbps
4K at 120 FPS 45 Mbps
Latency to an NVIDIA data center Below 80 ms

These figures are service requirements and targets, not guarantees of image quality or frame rate. Local network congestion, Wi-Fi interference, distance from the router, distance from the data center, packet loss, and display settings can still affect streaming quality.

How do you troubleshoot GeForce NOW on Steam Deck?

Start with the simplest checks before changing the installation:

  1. Install current Steam Deck system updates, then restart the Deck before diagnosing the app.
  2. Confirm that the game is supported by GeForce NOW and that the correct store account is connected.
  3. If Wi-Fi is unstable, switch to a 5 GHz network where possible instead of a congested 2.4 GHz network.
  4. If a dock is available, test the same connection through wired Ethernet to separate Wi-Fi problems from account or app problems.
  5. If NVIDIA’s download page or installer uses different labels, follow the current NVIDIA page rather than an archived screenshot.

Do not assume that a higher advertised internet speed guarantees a smooth session. Latency, packet loss, congestion, the selected data center, display resolution, and refresh-rate settings all matter. The dossier contains no independent performance test, so actual battery life, latency, image quality, and frame rate depend on the reader’s own setup.

Do you need a dock for GeForce NOW on Steam Deck?

No. A dock is not required to install or use GeForce NOW in handheld mode. A dock becomes useful when connecting the Steam Deck to a TV or monitor, using wired Ethernet, attaching an external controller or keyboard and mouse, or charging through one hub.

Use case Handheld Steam Deck Docked Steam Deck
Portability Best for mobile play Designed for a fixed TV or monitor setup
Network Usually Wi-Fi Can use wired Ethernet through a dock
Controls Built-in Steam Deck controls Can add external controllers, keyboard, and mouse
Display Uses the built-in display Can connect to a TV or monitor; resolution and refresh rate depend on the dock, cable, display, and settings
Power and accessories Uses the Deck directly Can combine display, accessories, Ethernet, and power through a hub

Valve’s Steam Deck docking guide covers external displays, controllers, keyboard and mouse, Ethernet, and power. Valve notes that dock behavior can vary with the dock, cable, display input, resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and other conditions. In some display situations, launching from Desktop Mode may be necessary.

Can GeForce NOW on Steam Deck play at 4K on a TV?

NVIDIA reported that its native Steam Deck app could stream at up to 4K/60 when connected to a TV. That is a qualified platform capability, not a guarantee for every user: membership tier, supported game, TV or monitor, network, dock, cable, resolution, refresh rate, and other technical conditions determine what is actually available. NVIDIA’s May 29, 2025 native-app announcement describes the TV docking use case.

For a docked setup, verify the display’s supported input, use a compatible dock and cable, and test wired Ethernet if possible. A dock can make the setup more convenient, but no single dock should be treated as universally compatible or as a guarantee of 4K, HDR, Ethernet performance, or a particular frame rate.

Can you play GeForce NOW without installing games on the Steam Deck?

Yes, GeForce NOW is a cloud-gaming service, so supported games run on NVIDIA’s remote systems rather than being installed locally on the Steam Deck. You still need access to a supported game through a connected store account or an eligible free-to-play catalog, and unsupported games remain unavailable.
