To put hymn lyrics over recorded videos in a continuous YouTube livestream, build the picture in OBS Studio: loop a video or playlist, add a text overlay for the lyrics, then send OBS to YouTube with an encoder stream key. Test the stream in YouTube Studio before broadcasting. The setup can repeat media, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation; you still need a monitoring and recovery plan.
Before you set up the stream
- Enable livestreaming on the church’s YouTube channel. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do this before the planned start. YouTube’s live-streaming setup instructions
- Prepare recorded video files and the lyric text you intend to show.
- Confirm you have the necessary rights for the songs, lyrics, arrangements, and recordings. A recording being available to the church, or lyrics being added to the picture, does not by itself establish permission to stream them.
- Install OBS Studio. YouTube identifies OBS as open-source video recording and live-streaming software. For a playlist in OBS, install VLC as well. OBS Media Sources
Build the video and lyrics scene in OBS
For one recording
- Open OBS and create or select a scene for the church stream.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Add the recorded video file.
- In the Media Source properties, enable Loop if the file should repeat continuously. OBS documents Media Source playback and looping. OBS Media Sources
For a sequence of recordings
- In Sources, select + and choose VLC Video Source.
- Add the video files to its playlist and enable Loop Playlist.
- Check the playlist order and playback before going live. VLC must be installed for this source to work. OBS Media Sources
Add the lyrics overlay
- In Sources, select + and add a Text (GDI+) source on Windows or Text (FreeType 2) on macOS or Linux.
- Enter the lyrics, position the text over the video, and adjust its size and contrast so it remains legible against changing footage. These are practical design choices; OBS does not prescribe a single lyric style.
- Use a text overlay when you want to control how lyrics appear in the picture. OBS’s VLC source also supports subtitles, which may suit a synchronized subtitle track instead. A lyric overlay and captions are separate production tasks. OBS Sources Guide
Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule an encoder livestream and open its stream settings. YouTube allows an encoder stream to be prepared in advance. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain where to find these values. YouTube encoder setup
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not show or share it publicly. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Start the OBS stream and use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room preview to verify that the video, lyrics, and audio arrive correctly before you make the broadcast public. YouTube recommends setting up ahead of time, previewing, and monitoring the stream. YouTube: Stream health and troubleshooting
Check lyric timing, accessibility, and stream reliability
Lyrics and captions are not the same thing
A lyric overlay is text composited into the video image. Captions are timed text intended to communicate spoken or sung audio accessibly. YouTube says live captions must be sent embedded in the video or through supported software; timed subtitle files can also be prepared in formats such as UTF-8 SRT. Consider captions separately if your congregation needs them in addition to visible lyrics. YouTube live captions · YouTube subtitles and captions
Preview the complete loop
- Confirm the video repeats or advances through the playlist in the intended order.
- Check that lyric changes match the recording and remain readable against each scene.
- Listen for audio and watch for interruptions or unexpected pauses in YouTube’s preview.
- Decide who will monitor the encoder, computer, network, and stream, and how they will restart the broadcast after a power or connection failure. A loop setting repeats media; it is not an uptime guarantee. YouTube recommends a reliable network and stream-health monitoring but does not promise uninterrupted availability. Clear music and lyric rights before broadcasting
Adding lyrics does not clear rights to the hymn composition, lyric text, or recording. YouTube says it scans live streams for third-party content; it may warn the broadcaster, interrupt the stream, or terminate it when content is identified. Even where a third-party owner has licensed a channel, that owner may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID to avoid interruption. YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams
YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the broadcaster to hold the necessary rights for worldwide use of live content, including music rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Verify the specific songs, lyric text, recordings, territory, platform, and continuous replay with the relevant licensors or rights holders. Do not assume a general church streaming license covers commercial recordings, every lyric, or nonstop rebroadcast; the exact scope depends on the license. YouTube Livestream Terms and Conditions

YouTube notes that labeling music “free” in a description does not prevent a Content ID claim. Its guidance points to public-domain music or music for which permission has been obtained, and mentions the YouTube Audio Library and Creator Music subject to their terms and availability.
