YouTube Live Control Room vs. OBS: Scheduling Podcast Episodes and Keeping a Stream Running

Schedule podcast events in YouTube Live Control Room and use OBS to send the feed. A scheduled event is not the same as recurring, unattended streaming.

Schedule the YouTube event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room; use OBS as an encoder to send the podcast’s audio and video to that event. These are different jobs, and scheduling one event is not the same as creating a recurring, unattended broadcast. YouTube documents event scheduling and encoder setup, but that alone does not establish that OBS will repeat episodes, recover automatically after a failure, or stream indefinitely.

What Live Control Room and OBS each do

YouTube Live Control Room manages the event on YouTube. In YouTube Studio, its Manage tab lets you schedule a stream, reuse settings from an earlier stream, or create a new one. OBS is an encoder option: it produces the media feed and sends it to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s documented encoder workflow then has you wait for the preview and select Go live when ready. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

Task Live Control Room OBS
Create and schedule a YouTube event Yes; use the Manage tab. Not the documented YouTube event-scheduling role.
Send the live audio/video feed Receives and previews the encoder feed. Can encode and send the feed to YouTube.
Make episodes recur automatically A scheduled event is documented; automatic recurring episode scheduling is not established by the cited YouTube guidance. Not established here. Check current OBS documentation and any plugins or external automation you intend to use.
Recover automatically after a dropped connection or encoder failure Not established by the cited guidance. Not established here; verify the behavior of your particular OBS setup and automation.
Archive the broadcast YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; behavior for longer streams is not established by that guidance. Local recording is a separate workflow to configure and verify.

How to schedule and start one podcast episode

  1. Confirm the channel can livestream. YouTube Help says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. It also states that streamers must be at least 16. These platform rules can change, so check YouTube’s getting-started guidance before relying on them.
  2. Create the event. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, go to Manage, and schedule a stream. You can reuse settings from a previous stream or create a new event. Scheduling can make an event appear as upcoming, and viewers may opt in to notifications; this is not evidence of an automatically recurring episode series. See YouTube’s live stream settings instructions.
  3. Connect OBS as the encoder. In the event’s encoder settings, obtain the YouTube stream URL and stream key, then enter them in OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube describes stream keys as the information that lets an encoder send a feed to the right destination and YouTube accept it. Treat the key as a credential: do not share or publish it, and reset it in Live Control Room if compromised. YouTube Help puts it this way: “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.”
  4. Set and test the output. Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate that your upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of stable performance; test the actual connection and check stream health. For current figures and other resolutions or codecs, consult YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
  5. Start early and check the preview. YouTube recommends configuring the encoder well before the event, starting it ahead of the scheduled time, and checking the Live Control Room preview before going live. Confirm the event is accessible and check audio and video quality. The Go live action is part of the documented workflow; do not assume enabling an encoder control or scheduling an event alone will start every setup unattended.
  6. Monitor and protect a separate recording. Keep an eye on stream health and the audience-facing audio/video. YouTube’s tips also recommend verifying local archive files during preparation. Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived according to YouTube Help; for a continuous stream or one expected to exceed that duration, arrange a separate recording/archive workflow and verify current platform behavior rather than relying on automatic archiving.

What continuous or recurring scheduling requires

A scheduled event gives viewers a time and destination for a particular broadcast. A continuous channel or recurring episode run also needs a reliable mechanism to start the right episode, keep the encoder and connection available, handle interruptions, and decide what happens between episodes. The cited YouTube guidance documents encoder auto-start and auto-stop controls and reuse of stream settings, but does not establish that these controls create a recurring schedule, restart OBS after a failure, or keep a podcast running indefinitely.

  • If you want one live episode at a set time, schedule that event in Live Control Room and operate OBS as the encoder.
  • If you need episodes to recur without someone present, verify the exact behavior of your current OBS version, any plugins, and external automation. Test missed starts, encoder crashes, network loss, and recovery before depending on it.
  • If you plan to broadcast continuously, plan recording and archiving separately, especially for streams that may exceed 12 hours.

YouTube describes encoders as supporting overlays and hardware such as preamps, microphones, and cameras, but it also says expensive equipment is not required to get started. Buy or add equipment only for a concrete need in your recording or encoding setup; no particular microphone, interface, or streaming computer is required just to schedule an event. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Troubleshooting the event and encoder handoff

  • The event is scheduled but no picture or sound appears: Check that OBS is sending to the event’s current stream URL and key, then inspect the Live Control Room preview before selecting Go live.
  • YouTube is not accepting the encoder feed: Recheck the stream key and destination. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS with the new key.
  • The stream is unstable: Test the upload connection and lower output demands if needed. Use YouTube’s recommendations for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec as a starting point, then monitor stream health rather than treating a recommended bitrate as a guarantee.
  • A later episode does not start automatically: A scheduled YouTube event does not by itself prove recurrence. Check the configured OBS, plugin, or external automation and test the entire sequence, including the transition between episodes.
  • The stream stops and does not resume: Do not assume YouTube scheduling or encoder auto-start/stop provides failure recovery. Verify and test the recovery behavior of your actual encoder and automation.
  • A long broadcast is missing an expected archive: YouTube’s cited guidance guarantees automatic archiving only for streams under 12 hours. Use a separate local recording/archive plan for longer output and confirm current platform behavior.
