How to Add Mods to an Aternos Server (Minecraft Java Edition)

To add mods to an Aternos server, install Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt through Aternos’s Software section, then install supported mods from the server’s Mods/Addons catalog. Every player must use the same Minecraft version, loader, loader version, compatible mod versions, and required dependencies. This guide applies to Minecraft: Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition.

Aternos uses a library-based installation system. Its official guide does not describe uploading arbitrary .jar files directly; users who need custom mod or modpack uploads are directed to exaroton.

Before you begin

  • An Aternos server running Minecraft: Java Edition
  • The Minecraft version required by your chosen mod or modpack
  • The correct mod loader: Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt
  • A list of the mods and their required dependencies
  • A matching launcher profile or instance for every player
  • A backup of the world, especially before adding or removing mods that add blocks, items, entities, or world generation

Do not choose a loader simply because it is newer or appears first. The mod’s project page determines whether you need Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt. A Forge mod generally cannot be installed on Fabric, and the same applies in reverse unless the project explicitly supports both.

Aternos says Forge has the largest selection in its catalog, while Fabric can offer different features or performance characteristics. Compatibility with your chosen mods matters more than a general preference.

1. Install the correct mod loader on Aternos

  1. Stop the server if it is running.
  2. Open your server dashboard and select Software.
  3. Select the required loader: Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt.
  4. Choose the exact Minecraft version supported by your mod.
  5. Install the selected server software.

The exact dashboard layout and button labels can change, but the workflow is documented in Aternos’s official Java Edition mod guide.

2. Install mods through Mods or Addons

  1. Open the server’s Mods or Addons area.
  2. Search for the exact project name.
  3. Open the correct project and verify its Minecraft version and loader.
  4. Select Install or the equivalent installation control.
  5. Repeat the process for every server-required mod.

Aternos’s catalog draws from CurseForge and Modrinth, but that does not mean every project published on either platform is automatically available. Check the project page before installing: the same mod name may have separate files for different Minecraft versions and loaders.

Install dependencies too

A dependency is a mod or library that another mod requires. Read the project’s CurseForge or Modrinth description and check the dependency’s:

  • Required Minecraft version
  • Required loader
  • Compatible version range
  • Server/client installation requirement

Some dependencies appear in Aternos’s mod list, but you may need to find and install them separately. For example, Aternos uses Tinkers’ Construct and Mantle as an example of a mod and its required dependency.

3. Recreate the setup on every player’s computer

Installing a mod on the server is not enough. Each player needs a compatible client setup. Aternos recommends launchers such as:

Create a separate profile or instance rather than mixing files into a single global installation. Configure it with:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The same Minecraft version as the Aternos server
  • The same loader family
  • The same loader version where required
  • The same versions of all server-relevant mods
  • All required dependencies

Players can also install files manually in the client’s .minecraft/mods folder, but the folder location varies by operating system and launcher. A dedicated instance is safer because it prevents unrelated or outdated .jar files from interfering with the server profile. Download files from the mod’s official CurseForge or Modrinth project page.

Do all players need every mod?

No. Mod installation depends on what each mod does:

Mattel Games UNO Minecraft Card Game with Storage Tin,Ages 7+ | Video Game Themed Deck with Special Rule for Kids, Teens, Parties & Family Game Night, 2-10 Players (Amazon Exclusive)
  • The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
  • UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
  • Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
  • The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
  • Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
  • Content and gameplay mods: Usually need to be installed on both the server and connecting clients.
  • Client-only mods: Graphics, interface, map, and some performance mods may belong only on the player’s computer.
  • Server-only mods: Some administrative or server-behavior mods may not be required by clients.

For beginners, follow the mod’s documentation and the loader’s error message rather than guessing. Aternos warns that missing or different mods and versions can prevent a client from connecting. Matching only the Minecraft version is not enough.

4. Start the server and connect

  1. Start the Aternos server.
  2. Wait for the modded server to finish loading.
  3. Launch the matching modded profile on your computer.
  4. Join using the normal Aternos server address.

Modded servers can take significantly longer to start than ordinary servers. A long startup is not automatically a crash, but inspect the console if the server stops or remains stuck instead of reaching a running state.

Can you install a predefined modpack?

Yes, but a predefined Aternos modpack must be used as provided. Aternos says you cannot install one of its predefined modpacks and then add individual mods or change its configurations through the normal mod installation workflow. Only one predefined modpack can be installed at a time.

Use the modpack route when you want the complete collection unchanged. The launcher and modpack version must also match on each player’s computer.

Mattel Games UNO Minecraft Card Game for Kids, Adults, Families & Parties, Deck & Special Rule Inspired by the Video Game, 2 to 10 Players
  • Now Minecraft lovers can play a special version of UNO!
  • Same as Basic UNO but features Minecraft characters and includes special Creeper rule card. Draw this card and the other players have to draw three more cards from the pile!
  • The goal is to get rid of all the cards in your hand.
  • First player or team to 500 wins.
  • When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!

For a customized collection, select Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt directly in Software, then install the mods individually through Mods/Addons. Alternatively, use a host that supports custom uploads.

Can you upload your own .jar mod to Aternos?

Aternos’s official guide directs users who want to upload their own mods or modpacks to exaroton. Therefore, do not rely on instructions claiming that you can freely upload any custom mod file through an Aternos file manager.

If a mod is missing from Aternos:

  1. Search again using the exact project name.
  2. Confirm the Minecraft version and loader.
  3. Check the official CurseForge or Modrinth page.
  4. Use Aternos’s mod suggestion process if appropriate.
  5. Look for a compatible alternative.
  6. Move the server to a host that explicitly permits custom mod uploads.

A project may be absent because the selected version or loader is unsupported, the project has not been indexed, or it is client-only, obsolete, unpublished, or otherwise unsuitable for server installation. Do not assume that every CurseForge or Modrinth project can be installed on Aternos.

Troubleshooting mismatched-mod errors

Common messages include:

  • “Failed to synchronize registry data from server”
  • “Fatally missing registry entries”
  • “Connection closed – mismatched mod channel list”
  • “Incomplete set of tags received”
  • “Mod Rejections”

These usually mean that the client and server do not have the same compatible setup. Aternos’s mismatched-mods guide explains that Minecraft, loader, and mod versions all matter.

Symptom First checks
Missing registry entries Check for a missing, different, or incompatible content mod.
Mismatched mod channel list Compare the loader and exact mod versions.
Mod rejection Compare the client and server mod lists and dependencies.
Server crashes while starting Check the loader, Minecraft version, dependencies, and recently added mods.
Modpack will not connect Use the correct launcher and exact modpack release.

Use this recovery checklist

  1. Compare the Minecraft version on the server and client.
  2. Compare the loader family.
  3. Compare the exact loader version.
  4. Compare every mod’s exact version.
  5. Check for missing dependencies.
  6. Remove duplicate or outdated files from the client’s mods folder.
  7. Verify the correct launcher profile and modpack version.
  8. Try a clean launcher instance.
  9. Review the server log and client crash report.
  10. Add or remove mods one at a time to identify the incompatible file.

If the server crashes during startup

Common possibilities include the wrong loader, a mod built for another Minecraft version, a missing dependency, incompatible mods, a client-only mod installed on the server, or duplicate/corrupt files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop the server.
  2. Check the startup log, focusing on the first reported error rather than the later cascade of errors.
  3. Confirm the mod’s loader and Minecraft version on its project page.
  4. Remove the most recently installed mod and test again.
  5. Restore a backup before removing world-affecting mods.

If a mod loads but its features do not work, check whether it is client-only or server-only, whether a dependency is installed on both required sides, and whether the mod requires a new world or newly generated chunks. These behaviors vary by project, so consult its documentation.

When Aternos is enough—and when it is not

Aternos is a good fit when the required mods are present in its Addons catalog, the group can reproduce the same client setup, and an unchanged supported modpack is sufficient.

It is a poor fit when you need to upload a private mod, use arbitrary custom server files, modify a predefined modpack, or install a project that is unavailable and has no suitable replacement.

The most directly relevant alternative is exaroton, which is operated by the Aternos team and documents support for custom mod and modpack uploads. It uses usage-based credits rather than a fixed monthly server price. Its documented pricing page states that one credit is worth €0.01, running costs 1 credit per GB of RAM per hour, RAM allocations are documented from 2 GB to 16 GB, and storage is limited to 10 GB per server. A 4 GB server running for one hour would therefore cost 4 credits, or €0.04, based on that stated rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the current exaroton pricing documentation before deciding. Custom uploads are an advanced feature, unavailable during the free trial, and the service documents resource and storage limits.

Final checklist

  • Java Edition is being used.
  • The server has the loader required by the mods.
  • The Minecraft and loader versions match.
  • Every supported mod was installed through Aternos Addons.
  • Dependencies were installed and checked.
  • Each player has the correct launcher profile and client files.
  • Client-only and server-only mods were placed on the correct side.
  • A world backup exists before major mod changes.
  • The server reaches a running state before players join.
